Title: Installed MOS2 on my EFIKA
Post by: TheMagicM on July 12, 2008, 05:47:11 PM
(apoligies if the paragraphs are not wrapped properly..Sputnik doesnt
recognize this textbox or something..no word wrap).

well well well.. I must say.. this is probably the coolest thing I've bought "Amiga" wise in a LONG TIME.
I'm posting this from my EFIKA using Sputnik.  Its pretty cool but flickers when I load a page.
I'm wondering if its a MUI setting I need to change.  Also this textbox we post in,
well it doesnt word wrap properly so I'm hitting return myself to make it look
better.

Speedwise, booting up, the EFIKA is fast.  I'm running
a low profile Sapphire Radeon 9250 AGP 128meg gfx card,
6 gig 2.5" HD and a Kensington wireless USB KB+Mouse.  My enclosure
that I bought was too small so its just sitting here on a cardboard box (the original it came in).

I'm running 24bit 1280x1024, vanilla MOS2, havent tried any 68k
based apps just yet.

noiseless?

How fast does it boot, when is it ready for use?

took me ~19 seconds to boot up.

on the noise thing.. the only thing I hear is my 2.5" HD.

great, sounds like yours is working well. What are you using if not the efika custom case?

any tips on configuring the tcp so i can use sputnik on my dialup?
yea mine boots up in like 17-19 secs or so hitting enter

Sputnik flickering is not fixable by MUI settings. It is just "only" Sputnik problem.

You probably dont have to hit return to force word wrapping. If you posted without hitting return single time it probably would be displayed properly still.

There is still lot of work to do :)

zyphoid:

First I bought a Eagle Consus I series case.  Its too small.  So then I bought a 5.25" enclosure that looks "decent".  I'm going to do the modifications required to make it work.

itix:
man.. this is just so f'in cool.  the ssh tool is PERFECT.  I use ssh ALOT!  You guys need to pat yourselves on the back big time.

@TheMagicM#noise
Sweet, when it's in a case I bet it'll be all gone.

@TheMagicM#boot_time:
That's decent, how is the Efika firmware/bios? Can it be very quite (=no verbose), and can it have a VGA boot picture instead of a boot post.

I'm asking since I have no clue about it :) When I buy Efika (yes I will), I want it to be either all quitet, or just a pic until the OS takes over...

I hate my PC for showing the BUTT_UGLY bios post, I love my Amiga for skipping the KS-Screen and going straight to OS loading when all hardware probing and setup is done...

@TheMagicM,

Yea, I started setting mine up yesterday. The only video card I had that was low profile is a 32mb AGP Radeon 7000. It seems to work though.

My install went fine but I have a few questions.

My machine wont boot straight up to MorphOS when I start it up.

It just stops at the OK prompt at the BIOS screen? It will then boot if I give it the hd:0 Boot.img command.

Is there a way to get it just to boot straight into MorphOS? Did I do something wrong during the install?

It also wont change screenmodes once Ambient loads up. If I change screenmodes and reboot it just defaults back to 640x480?

Any help from MorphOS folks here?

to bootup automatically..

go to the OF "Ok" prompt and type:

setenv auto-boot? true
setenv boot-device hd:0
setenv boot-file boot.img

type "boot", hit return and the next time you reboot you'll autoboot.  It waits 5 seconds before it boots on its own.  I havnt looked into the OF docs to see if that can be disabled.

I need to install a taskmanager that kills off processes.  Sputnik locked up on me (MOS is useable) and it (Sputnik) was in a "Frozen" state.  Couldnt kill it though.

You probably saved settings before reboot? And you still have other screenmodes available?

"auto-boot-timeout" is what you are looking for, it's measured in milliseconds, settings below 1000 are not advised.

@everyone,

Ok, I got everything figured out now. MorphOS
looks pretty damn sweet on my Dell widescreen LCD!

Posting this from Sputnik on my Efika.

@TheMagicM,

yea, that flashing thing in Sputnik is pretty annoying.
It already crashed once too.

I am very happy with it also.  I am still pissed about VAT and the price but..I'm pretty sure i'm going to register.  i just wish that they would extend the $176 price till late August.  Too much goin on to buy MOS2 right now.  There are alot of little things that they did in MOS2 that are very helpful.  ie.  traversing folders and having the ability to "go back".  Did I say that I love the SSH client? (lol)

Too bad DiskMaster2 doesnt run on it.  I could of swore I used it on 1.4.5.  I could be wrong.  (not that DM2 is that great but I like it)

btw, here's a good sized repository for MOS:

http://www.pegasosppc.cz/software_en.html

If some links are dead, like a few that went to it.aminet.whatever it was.. just replace "it." with "main." so it can be redirected to the main Aminet site.

Now I know StormC ran on 1.4.5..(ok, I think it did..its been a while since I ran MOS 1.4.5..) time to dig it up..

Sputnik crashed on me also.  Its actually the only thing that has other than some Amiga software that did (hit custom chips..I was just testing it).  For what the EFIKA is, it has exceeded my expectations for $99.

yeah I'm not sure how to change screen modes, but if you go to the Ambient right-click menu, settings, system, and then monitors, you can pick a monitor profile, add/remove modes, and play with custom timings (which is very nice BTW). I deleted all the modes except the one I wanted and now it uses that when it boots.
