From http://www.morphos.de/installation.html :

Quote

Efika:

Download morphos-2.0-efikainstall.img and put it in the root directory of a USB mass storage device.
Insert the USB device into a USB port on the Efika.
In order to have access to a mouse and keyboard while you are installing from a USB device, we suggest you use a USB hub to connect these input devices.

Turn on your Efika.

Press escape on the keyboard until you reach the Open Firmware prompt.

At the Open Firmware prompt, type:
> boot scsi:0 morphos-2.0-efikainstall.img

MorphOS will now start booting. Please be patient. This may take a short while. Once it is done booting, click on the iWizard icon and start the download of the full MorphOS ISO..

Please note that the default ISO download directory is ram: - however the ISO will not fit there. Therefore, you must manually adjust the download path to match the partition you are installing MorphOS to.

Special note: The Efika sound driver is currently not included. This will be solved via an update shortly.

Beyond that try this thread:

put the efika boot.img on any usb stick (or usb harddrive) and type at th openfirmware promt
> boot hd0:0 boot.img rd rds 0

The cursor should start to spin and after a while Quark/Openfirmware should be prompted at the console.
Be a bit patient since booting off the img from usb is pretty slow (it really takes a while). Also MOS is a bit picky about the usb stick. Try several ones if the first one doesn't cut it.
Just start the iWizard (y doubleclick) to start the installation. For further information read the FAQs from http://www.morphos-team.net/faq.html.
Make sure the partition MorphOS is copied to is marked as bootable.

What type of USB device are you trying to boot from?  How is it formatted?

hey Mike
I was using a 512meg usb which had the fat designation, but it didn't work initially, so I reformatted it and I got it going (fat/fat16) or it wont work i guess.
big ups!   to voyager2007 for this how to
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=26398&forum=28&start=20&viewmode=flat&order=0#446362

so far I made it to format screen, it timed out there, and eventually locked up, I'm on it again!

@zyphoid

Stay at it you'll get it working. I used a 128mb (fat) stick with a usb hub for keyboard and mouse.

The voyager2007 instruction list you linked to is pretty much right on.

Now something to think about, I had some problems with stick and hub orientation as it pertained to usb ports on the Efika, where I had the hub plug into the top usb port and the stick plug into the bottom and I was getting system freeze ups at various stopping points during the firmware boot up. I swapped them around and was successful.

Another possible problem some have been having with keyboard and mouse being plugged into the usb hub, make sure your mouse is plugged in after the keyboard, meaning if it is a 4 port usb hub plug keyboard hub port 1, then mouse hub port 2.

Make sure your installer image is in the root directory of the memory stick.  I hope this helps with getting your Efika up and running.  I'm impressed with the speed and quickness of the Efika running MorphOS 2.0. I think you will be too. :-D

now I'm up...what next? it is so fickle, that I can't do anything! Yes I want to buy the key... No it's not worth the instability on efika, if the key doesn't prevent the lock ups.. or some kind of fix! Hey guys..I would love to appreciate the work, but..?

how do you get connected online? no tcp stack eg genesis (plus i have to dial up) I was hoping to post this thread on sputnik like some others
diamonds...didn't get that goning either.  Oh by all means.. send me over the the Zone!! :getmad:

Sorry to hear about your displeasure with MOS 2.0.  Are you using the "boot HD:0 boot.img 3d"?  If so there has been some reports of freeze ups using it in 3d mode.

On my last post, I gave you some info on keyboard/mouse and usb hubs that could cause some instabilities if not connected in a particular order.

I have a licensed copy of MOS 2.0, and it has been running just as smooth as it did without the license minus the time limit of course.

Getting online with my Ethernet connection with no trouble at all, and this post comes via my Efika running MOS 2.0. :-D

Games and applications are running fine.  Not sure what exactly is causing your system's bad behavior.  I'm sure the MOS team is still finding bugs and solving them as fast as they can.

Hi

Got my Efika open client today. Managed to partition the drive, and get Morph OS 2.0 installed on DH0 partition.

Only problem is I can't get the system to boot at all from the harddrive?

I made DH0: bootable, and gave it a boot priority but whatever I type at the OK prompt I can't get it to boot off the harddrive.

Help needed? Thanks in advance

So what did you type exactly?

Is your boot partition the first partition on the disk, or is it some other number? What file system does it have?

What message did you get as response?

If you have correctly set the "boot-device" and "boot-file" OpenFirmware variables to point to your boot partition and boot file (including any boot parameters) respectively, you should be able to boot simply by typing "boot" and hit enter (and if that work (but only if that is the case) you can optionally set the "auto-boot-timeout" and "auto-boot?" variables in order to autoboot). You can see what current values the variables have by typing "printenv"

Please have a look at the boot section here for more info:
http://www.morphos-team.net/faq.html

If you are interested in more in-depth info about the Efika Open Firmware (and Open Firmware in general) beyond simply booting, check out the "EFIKA How To Guide" found here:
http://efika.de/index_en.html

And also these:
http://www.pegasosppc.com/manuals/SmartFirmware.pdf
http://www.pegasosppc.com/manuals/SFUserManual.pdf

There is one more which is really extensive, but I can't remember where it is. Open Firmware is really powerful and flexible. It can look complicated at a first glance, but it's really not. But OK, just to get going and setting the boot info you don't need to read all this! ;-)

BTW, if you want to get your MorphOS/Efika questions answered a bit faster, try posting at http://morphzone.org :-)

Are you saying that your Efika is running stable with MorphOS 2.0?

If so please put your full specs here so maybe me and the other folks having stability issues can start troubleshooting a bit?

I've seen reports here and there of it running stable but nobody seems to have an answer to why everyone else is having such issues.

@spihunter

Efika System Configuration:

MorphOS 2.0 with License Key

Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9250
Mfr Part Number: GV-R925128DE
Chipset: ATI Radeon 9250
Memory: 128 MB
Memory Bus: 64 Bit
BUS: AGP 8X
Memory Type: DDR 16Mx16
D-SUB: Yes
TV-OUT: Yes
DVI Port: Yes

Hitachi Travelstar 2.5in 5K160 60GB ATA Hard Drive (5400rpm)
Mfr Part Number: HTS541660J9AT00 0A28416 (Partition off into 3 equal sizes HD:0, HD:1, HD:2)(Boot.img resides on HD:0)

4-Port USB 2.0 Mini Hub Bus Power (Inserted at the botton USB port on the Efika; Top USB port is left open for any Flash drive use)

A4Tech KL-5 2-Tone 88 Normal Keys 7 Function Keys USB + PS/2 Mini X-Slim Keyboard (Keyboard USB is inserted first in the USB hub)

IOGEAR GME222A 2-Tone 3 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical 800 dpi Mini Mouse (Mouse USB is inserted second behind the keyboard in the USB hub)

Known issues:  Loading the 3d command has caused freeze ups during normal use(moving a window around).  Running Sputnik (browser) and clicking on a link within a page while the page is still downloading has caused MOS2.0 to freeze up.:madashell:

Cures:  Avoid using the 3d command at boot, and wait for Sputnik to complete loading page before moving to another link.:-?

I hope this helps.  For the most part I'm still into my beta testing of MOS2.0, but I have had good results from just "regular" use (i.e. opening programs, playing the games, surfing the WWW).

I do have a second Efika, Gigabyte 9250, and Hitachi Drive still in their packaging if any one is interested.  Will sell at cost($225) + shipping.

Try the safe boot.  It escapes me at the moment the script, but it should allow you to boot into MOS2 with basic screen mode.  Then you should be able to change your settings.

Thanks!! that was it. how do i save this setting? this is lovely now... i owe you man!!

edit: yea, it gives me a 1024x768x60Hz.  This resolution gives the entire screen, and works for me.  How do i save it.  i tried getting back to monitor settings, but not getting the option to do that any last advice?

Post by: DamageX on July 19, 2008, 05:14:20 AM
OK try this. Go to system settings, and monitors. If 1024x768 is not in the list then you will have to add it. First choose your monitor, or if you don't know exactly which one to use then go with 48KHz because that should give you 1024x768x60hz. Then add a mode, and pick 1024x768 from the drop-down list. Save the settings and reboot.

Now go to system settings and screens. Click on Ambient, and then edit, and choose the 1024x768.

it didn't set, just revert to that old setting, strange...had a similar issue with setting the clock but i had to try setting it in the pre boot img wizard and save it. might have to do it there?
