I just picked up one of these and I've been using it with different emulators on my PC. C64, Atari and Mame.
I've always loved the old Atari joysticks but this also supports any other joystick that uses the Atari style connector. I'm sure that others have seen it already but I thought just in case I'd post it.
I did try a search of the forums first but nothing matched on the two searches I did.
He has both the plans here and sells completed cables.
Atari Style joystick/controller to USB adapter. (http://www.raphnet.net/electronique/atari_usb/index_en.php)

How well does it work? I've heard some people say these USB adapters have lag. What are your thoughts on performance?

I was worried about that too. I've seen no lag in my emulators at all. In fact I've bested my scores in MAME on several games using the good old Atari 2600 stick. After all these years, it still feels better than any other. Wow does that sound just wrong!!!!
Is there any specific test you can think of? I'd be happy to try it out.

I have a Stelladaptor which I bought from Atariage.com. They were selling for about $35 but the store seems to be down this morning. I've used it for a couple of years with Amiga Forever and my PC, as well as the Stella Atari 2600 emulator. Works just like you'd expect. I didn't see any performance issues.

Yup i've read about them. Thought it was a bit expensive though especially if you want two of them.
If you have a paralell port on your PC you could use a 4 playeradapter for the Amiga as a joystick-adapter for the PC together with PPJoy (http://www.geocities.com/deonvdw/Docs/PPJoyMain.htm). I've tried it with a Tac-2 on Giana Sisters in WinUAE.
USB-interface is nicer but this works aswell and is cheaper.

The Stella Adapters looked cool as well but the last I checked those were sold out and cost more than Ralph's. His are "temporarily out of stock" but he's building more regularly. I got mine in a little over a month which included shipping from the US to Canada.
The ready built cables are $25.99CA plus shipping. If you want to build one yourself he is nice enough to include schematics and a parts list on his site. The nice thing is since it's an Atari adapter you can use the joysticks on your existing retro hardware - In my case A1200, A4000D, A500, A2000 and an Atari 2600 plus you can use them on the PC with emulators using the adapter.
Like the nice Competition Pro that I see Red has on sale right now. ;-)
