Title: Where'd you buy your First Amiga?
Post by: Crom00 on July 08, 2008, 09:38:35 PM
Got mine in NYC from one of those stores in Midtown Manhattan NYC that sold electronics, porcelain cats, luggage, and rugs. Paid $150 for an Amiga 1000 in 1989.

Before that I bought a commodore 64 in 1984 from this guy...

and 2 years before that a Colecovision

A500 Caped Crusader pack - £328 iirc.

Ahh, amazing how it sticks in the memory ;-)

Bought my A500 from the local Commodore shop here in my town :) Dont remember the year. Around 94 or something.

Bought my C64 at another local photo shop.

Bought my A500 at Creative Computers, Lawndale, CA during the summer of 1989.  I think I paid $299 for the A500, and another $199 for the 1084S.  I also picked up an A501 clone and a Roctec floppy but I think I might have gotten those a bit later.

My dad bought our first A500 from a local shop called Colchester Computer Center. I have no idea how much it cost as it was a Christmas present, and I was very young at the time anyway. My dad said that he took it to the station (he was a copper at the time) and set it up and he and his co-workers all played Nebulus, and they were all totally blown away by the graphics, in particular the rotating tower.

I still love that game :-)

Bought mine for Babysitter money from a mailorder company.

Can't remember what they were called, but they also gave out an computer hobbist magazine, which later turned into a pure amiga magazine.

They also sold Atari. That's how I became aware of the Amiga. As I first bought an Atari XE64 console which were marked as a computer. Well after butting my head against basic on that one, and quickly getting bored with it's games that were only marginally better than on the Atari2600jr which I'd gotten from my parents. I saw an ad in the magazine which I got from the mail order company since buying my Atari XE.

Having heard that Whiskas (the handle of a friend of mine) had an amiga, I asked to check it out and I immediately fell in love with it. It seemed to kick ass, which it indeed also did.

Thus I spent A LOT more than 8000NOK. In quick succession I bought an Amiga500, 512k extra memory. And shortly after a 120MB GVP HD with 2MB more RAM.

And it served me well. I, Whiskas and AMOS had a lot of fun with that girl....

I remember the downer when the only game we ever had close to finishing were tested on Whiskas' "stock" Amiga with 512k extra fast. And it wouldn't run, "Out of memory". And the Orange screen from AMOS.

Alas, Ducks in Space never survived that hit... Later games that met similar fates where "Monster Bunny" and "Monster Hamster".

We only released on poorly made AMOS demo... Can't remember what it was called. But it was released under the best name our hormone filled brains could come up with: "Crime Software". Later we changed it to "Pan Productions", because we had the idea that the mythical Pan was a guy who had pleny of tail and good reports with the ladies....

Any who... that was a quick trip down memory lane....

Timeline

First encounter: Neighbor had a x86 with a helicopter game...

Determination: Mowe lawns and baby sit to earn money for a computer

Atari 2600jr: A gift from my parents

Atari XE 64: I got suckered by ads

Amiga 500: I saw the ligth. Xpandet it with GVP 120MB scsi disk with 2MB fast and a 512k fast card with clock.

Amiga 1200: As soon as it became available in norway. I had to have AGA... Though it only had 80MB disk which I soon felt as too small. So I put in a 3.5" disk and a clock card of some sorts with mem. It got replaced with a Blizzard030

Amiga 4000: First second hand amiga. Got beefed up with PPC, PicassoIV, CVPPC, SCSI disk, etc etc. I had it until 2000 or 1999.

iMac: What can I say? I never thougth....

PC: yeah, it happened... Work is to blame, it took the edge off.. But I never managed to settle on an OS.

Amiga 500: It happened... My sisters x were cleaning out the loft last year, and found it. He gave it to me.

2xA1200: Jackpot. One is painted satin black, they will be pimped... 030, CD-ROM, CF HD, picoITX PSU...

A4000: Bought it from netherlands. Flew down and picked it up. It was fun! :)

MacMini: My day to day torrent, divx and firefox machine.

Now ofcourse, all since PC... back in 2001, there has been WinUAE. But I never really considered it since the amazing AmiKit came around, it kicks ass! Simply love it.

I had a "state of the art" 486 DX that I've sold and then I've bought my A1200 as soon as they hit the market, from a smugler that sold stuff from Paraguai.

Amigas were not legally sold in Brasil up to the early 90's due to the computer reserve law. The law was dropped just some months after I get my Amiga...

Still works fine to this day, even the HD. :-)

Bought an Amiga 500 Rev. 5 second hand from a guy in 1993 when I got back from my first road trip in my first car.  He did some kind of molecular biology and music (still have a lot of his work on floppy.)  Had a fully populated 4MB BaseBoard (which someone here bought from me a few years ago,) an extra floppy drive, a butt-load of games (except Shadow of the Beast, which is really why I wanted an Amiga!) and some programming manuals.

A couple of years later I got hold of an A500+HD8 with a whopping 20MB hard drive and another 4MB of RAM.  I had 8MB in that baby -- SCREAMIN'!

I've never looked back since.

My first Amiga was an A500 with a 1084S monitor (still have it, still working flawlessly) on 24 March 1991 from a local computer shop in Chania, Crete, Greece. The price? About 240.000 drachmas (about 700 euros).

But of course you can't compare the prices now (2008) and the ones from 1991. 700 euros back in 1991 where a lot of money.

We're landing the 16th at Heraklion, and flying out the 30th from Chania. We're staying one week in Agia Marina, then one week in Agia Gallini.

Looking forward to it. Never been to Crete before, only three times to the Cyclades Islands, island-hopping. Each time landing at Santorini, and making sure to spend some time on Anti Paros.

Sorry for being off topic :)

At that time I was in Newark NJ and they had and still have a massive Portuguese and Brazilian community. The Brazilians loved the Amiga becuase it was ok to bring it back to Brazil as the A500 was under a certain allocated value of $300 (I think) that you can take into Brazil and get through customs OK. Dudes would take the A500, a girlfriend would take a hard drive attachment, another pall would take the ram, floppy, etc. Pretty funny.

My tax man was a Brazilian and he'd recommend all Brazilians buy Amigas to take back to Brazil, pretty cool.

Plus what you got for $300 compared to say a PC was pretty damn good value.

I bought my trusty a600 around 1995 i think, bought it for about 50 dollars from a friend, most of the disks were water damaged, but north & south worked periodically, so did lotus, and the keyboard ribbon cable was damanged. After brushing dust off it again a few years ago, i discovered the community, amigakit and amigashop.com wanted the accelerator from jens, so i could use it as a mp3 player in a car. My amigas has since probably become the most expensive computer i got. I later got the a4000 and an a1200, i do most of my tracking on the 1200 now, and the a600 is back gathering dust waiting for the accelerator.

I think i actually preferred the c64 over the a600 for some reason and continued using that until it ended up in the attic in a box gathering dust.

Bought an A500, 1084S and a Vortex ATonce card from TENEX Computer Express in late 1990.

I should have invested the cost of the ATonce in some other piece of hardware, tho.  What did the A2000 cost at that time?

An Amiga 500, used from Star tech, Massena, NY in the spring of 1991 when I was attending SUNY Potsdam. Which was soon joined with a GVP harddrive/memory expansion. This replaced my 64 with GOES. It was nice being one of the few students on campus with a computer. No crowded computer labs!

I got my A500 for my birthday around April 1991 from the computer section of V&D, a Dutch department store, for the princely sum of 1000 guilders (approx 450 euros).

Then, when we got home I realized I needed an A501 RF modulator (not included) and had to go back and buy one for the rip off price of 100 guilders. I still don't know how my parents managed to afford it back then, but I'm glad they did.

Chania, eh? Busy, touristy, but still charming in its own way. I especially liked the boulevard with all the pottery salesmen, and was sorely tempted to bring something home.

My first Amiga, an unexpanded A500 with 1084S monitor, was bought in 1987 for the price of fl. 2300,--, which would be €1000 in today's money not counting inflation. I was looking at something to replace my Schneider CPC464: finding software was a nightmare for that thing. Some store pointed out that there had just been a new computer out with the name 'Amiga', and handed me a leaflet. I bought one two months later, I think. I got it at a store on the Korte Poten in the Hague, the Netherlands. The chain the store belonged to disappeared ten years later or so, but it kept on selling computers; I do not know if the store itself still exists as it's been years since I was there last.

I bought my A1200 from amigakit, last year. I had briefly access to an A500 back in 1990-91 and I have been curious about the Amiga OS and the hardware since then. I got my A1200 upgraded to 1260/50 and I bought an additional A500+ from ebay. Both machines are in great shape and lots of fun, especially the asm and hw programming. Recommended to anyone who is looking for variety and is bored of PC :)

1988, dixons in oxford.
i remember being blown away by the robocity demo on the workbench 1.2 A500 they had, and being gutted that my machine came with workbench 1.3 and no robocity!
little did i realise i had one of the very first 1.3 rev6 A500's
i think it cost £399, and a 1084s for £199

--- nostagic history follows ---
i then saved and saved and bought via mail order, a Cumana external 3.5" drive for £69, but the 1Meg ram upgrade was were it was at.
although i didn't have eyestrain from having to use a tv, i couldn't play the more numerous "1Meg only" games and demos. so more saving, and £39 for a ram upgrade later from whats become Electronics Boutique / Game in Oxfords westgate shopping centre, and i had the system that saw me through years of fun times.
eventually tricked out with 3.1rom, 2mb chipram, m-tek020+4mb, AdIDE (helped lift the M-tek over the minimegachip), 20Meg drive, and A570 CDrom. i didn't feel the need to go A1200 as i could outgun a base 1200 even with with fast ram. only AGA eluded me, and that was only for games, so bought a CD32 about 1993

1994, in a fit of stupidity, swapped my faithfull A500 and a stock A2000 for a dead A4000/030 with no keyboard/ram/hard disk. (it was a spare video titling machine used for "The Word" TV show). £90 to fix the A4000, £90 for a keyboard, £120 for four 4Mb 72pin simms, £110 for a 5.1Gb IDE quantum fireball, and £50 for a PLCC 25mhz 68882. then painted it purple with the "AMIGA" resessed logo picked out in silver.
that machine with a cyberstormII/040 and CV64/3D saw me into and out of my only year university ;-)

1998, swapped that for an A4000T
built it into an "ultimate PPC amiga"
2001, sold the A4000T in another fit of stupidity. monumentally gutted.

out into the x86 wilderness untill..
2004, picked up a 2nd hand boxed A1200 off a mate for £40,
2006, old rev5 A500 circa 1987 off the future brother-in-law for nothing
2008, wanted another A1200 as didn't like my blizz030IV sitting there not doing anything, accidentally landed two A1200's and an A600. so thats where i am today.

First Amiga,

What a subject.
Got mine from a local dealer. We had 3 in those days.
1986 bought my first computer at Omnitek computers in
Tewksbury,Mass for a mere $1295.00. I bought it with my wife's student discount. She never used it. The A1000 was a buzz with 4096 colors while a PC had 16. I was hooked.
Deluxe Paint sold the computer then.

I frequented the dealers as much as I could : The Memory Location especially upgrading to an A2000 in 1989.
Through the years I had an A500 and 3 A1200s too. I also went back to an A1000 from Software Hut in the 90's for nostalgia sake. After my 1200 blew up I went back to Software Hut and have an A4000T at last after all these years. Thank you for Software Hut. They got much of my business through the years. 10 years prior the cost of an A4000T was near $3,000.

Guess what, right now I only have an A4000T because my PC with 2 Gigs of ram, 512 K graphics card and Dual core processor at 2.86 GHz bit the dust. I'll be solely Amiga cruising again until the PC is fixed. Or should I fix it?
Ahhh, the Amiga 1000. What an idea.

Bought my Amiga 2000 and 1084S monitor in spring 1991 at the department store chain Karstadt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karstadt) in Hannover, Germany, from my confirmation money.

Had yet again to beat my three years younger brother - our "arms race" started with him buying an Atari 2600, which I surpassed by a Sega Mastersystem and later a Sega Megadrive. When he finally got an Amiga 500 about 1990, I was left with no choice. :-)

My dad bought our A1000 from Amigo Business Computers, East Northport, NY (Long Island) in spring of 1986, iirc.  (with the 512k expansion card, of course)

Along with a 1080 monitor.  I believe we got the A1010 floppy drive some time later.

It came with Kickstart/Workbench 1.0, and ABasic.  We also got Deluxe Paint 1 with it as well, which was on a 1.1 disk,
so it didn't actually work until they figured out that we needed the 1.1 Kickstart disk too. hehe.

We didn't get a pack of floppies for a week or so.  I remember my parents went out for the evening, and I drew a picture in DPaint, but was unable to save it since we didn't
have any floppies, so I left the computer on until they got home to show it to them. :)

Hehehe. I know some guys who did that at that time. The right value is US$500. Some people even took the risk to hand carry things over that limit and bet they would not be stoped at customs. Quite cool.

Paraguai is near enough for a (long) bus trip, so it was the main source of Amigas and Macs to Brasil.

Commodore started producing A1200's, A600's and some CD32 in the last days using a company called PCI to do it. That happend in the short time between dropping the law and Commodore's death

I got my A2000 from one of the comapnies that used to advertise in Commodore User back in 86 or early '87.  I was stationed in Colchester, UK at the time and a whopping big security truck delivered it to the barracks and pissed the RSM off as they wouldn't let him look inside the box unless I OKed it.  It came with a A1081 monitor which I still use.

I think that shop where Motorollin's dad got his Amiga is where I used to by my original software (There was only one place in Colchester at that time that stocked Amiga software and they sold A500s).

Hi,

I got my first A1200 with a 120 Meg internal Hard Drive in Germany at the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC) at RAF Bruggen.

My Christmas presant for 1993, the mother board is still running in an EyeTech Tower with a Blizzard/1240/40/SCSI Card/CD Rom/Zip 100 Drive/Catweasel with Sony High Density Floppy Drive/Flatbed Scanner and Epson C64 Printer.

Kind Regards, Michael

I think I got my first A500 from a mail order company that I saw an ad for in an Amiga magazine if I remember correctly. There used to be a great company called TENEX I think that put out a wonderful Amiga merchandise catalog, I bought tons of games and software from them.

I bought my first A1000 from someone I never met and never saw, through a friend of mine who had an A2000, which was the first Amiga I got to see in person.  I gave him the money and he bought my A1000 from a friend of his and delivered it to me a few days later.  Those early years really were the "Good old Days"!

Makes me wonder what it would take to ever get that feeling again?  Maybe when I get my first flying car or I win a trip to fly to another country and it just happens to have a short visit into low Earth orbit as an incentive for flying with ZeroG Airlines.

I got mine as a young pup for my birthday, cost a whole 400pounds from dixons,, remember the suitcase type box and taking in on the bus with me, very obvious, with AMIGA written on side of box, had to sell my cpc464 in order to finance it. With it were f18, batman deluxe paint 2 and new zealand story.. f18 way totally amazing back then, many all nighters with that one.

Ahh, mine had F29 retaliator (blew my Dad's mind when he saw that in action!), Rainbow Islands, Escape from the planet of the Robot Monsters (RSI inducer), (iirc) Batman, the Caped Crusader (crap) and D-Paint2.

That machine was amazing - it could do most of the stuff my Dad's £2000 PC could, with better graphics and sound. Kindwords for Word Processing was a bit lacking compared to Aldus Pagemaker though.. and my Dad's PC had a 20MB hard drive!

Got mine in Crotone at the wonderful "Computer House" shop, in 1989, if i recall well. I remember when i see for the firt time the water surrounding englang in Defender Of The Crown, then in Port Of Calls: i've drooled over the desk. When i saw the burning fire in DOTC, and the shadow of the heroes after the siege....

sigh....

I want another amiga.....

But wait.... :)

Our neighbours had an Amiga 500 and they allowed me to come and use it from time to time. They had managed to buy one on a subsidized purchase programme from their employer (Dutch local government) in '87 I guess.
Sometime during '88 I managed to convince my parents that I just had to have a computer for school projects. Got one second-hand for the princely sum of 1500 guilders.
Ironically, my school-grades were falling sharply from then on.

Good memories of Marble Madness, Defender of the Crown, Ports of Call, drawing girl nudie pictures in DPaint...

My first Amiga was an A1200HD40 that I got from a local shop in Cedar Falls, Iowa called "Software and More" at their going out of business sale.  It had been their display model so I got it for $650 .  That was the best computer I ever owned.  You wouldn't believe how much stuff I crammed onto that 40 meg hard drive!

I still have it and it still works but unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade it.  It has a Blizzard 1230 and SCSI interface that I bought when I took a class about Unix and C/C++ programming in '97 (although I never did buy and install NetBSD on it as I had planned).  I also put AmigaOS 3.9 on it as soon as it came out.

Bought it from a small independent computer store in Glasgow, Scotland in 1989.  Comcal was the name and it still exists!

Bought a vanilla A500, with no extras.  Me and my two brothers all chipped in and couldn't afford anything else.  They threw in a copy of Photon Paint.   :-)

Over time we got a star LC10 colour dot matrix printer.  1/2Mb memory upgrade and external floppy.

Happy times. :-)

Bought my first A500 in 1987 at the Compucenter in St. Vital mall, here in Winnipeg Canada. The store no longer exists, but I do remember fondly going to the store once a week to check out the computers in the display. The Amiga stood out because they had a demo of Accolda's Test Drive running next to some crappy black and white Mac. Ah, those were the days.

I believe that I also bought my A1200 from there, but the A4000/040 (with CV64 and some video capture card) was bought of eBay. Sold the A1200 years ago to some dude here in town, but I still have the A500 & A4000.

The first Amiga, an A500, in the house, bought by my father, came from dutch retail-chain V&D.

The first I bought myself was a brandnew Amiga 3000. I got it through mail-order. If I remember correctly it was bought from CSV Riegert in Germany (they still exist but have no Amiga business). I had my parents sent Eurocheques to pay for the machine :-).

The other machines I ever owned were used ones fetched thru online sales or even fair-trades.

I worked all summer at age 15 to save up $600 for an A500 I bought out of AmigaWorld.  It took another month or so to save up the cash for the 1084S (my parents paid half for the monitor).  Can you imagine the torture I went through during that month having a new A500 sitting in a box at my house with nothing to hook it up to?  This was a 1.2 machine before they came with the A520s.

Great memories, indeed.

I bought the December 1992 edition of Amiga Shopper (which I still have) and used it to figure out the package I wanted, and to persuade my parents to part with their cash!

They bought me the A1200 pack with Zool, Pinball Dreams, Striker and Transwrite for Christmas in 1992. We got it from Hobbyte, an English Amiga stockist.

My first upgrade was a 266MB 2.5" HD in 1993, then in 1995 I got a Blizzard 1230 IV with 16 MB RAM for Christmas (new from Power Computing I think).

A couple of years ago I picked up a Fast ATA controller with 3.1 ROMs, a Blizzard 1260 with 32MB RAM, a Surf Squirrel with CD Rom Drive, a 2.1 GB HD and a spare A1200, all for £60 (yes... that's £60...). Thanks to Amibench for that one!

The most recent update was a MAS player - good piece of kit too.

I'm thinking about getting an Indivision Scandoubler - but then I doubt my wife will be too happy!

Cheers,
AndyC

Mail order from Silica Systems.

It was the A1200 Sleepwalker pack, and it came with the silica bundle that included Zool, Transwrite, Photon Paint and GFA Basic.

Wow that brings back memories.

Bought my first A500 in a small computer shop in the King's Road, Hammersmith in 1990; cost was £399. Decided I wanted an Amiga after going round to a mates house after the pub and watched him trying to play Gods while drunk!

My first computer was a VIC 20 bought in Glasgow in 1982, was a present from my parents.

I got mine in june 1988, to a local retailer, it was the first amiga to ever reach my town (mondolfo in italy); i am pretty sure because i was bringing him software to use and he got it in november 1987, i started buying software even before to buy the amiga: i already decided to get one when possible!

It was having workbench 1.2 and already had some software such as deluxe paint and audiomaster, plus a couple of games such as test drive and xenon 1. Following somebody gave me a copy of sonix and i started to do some music:)

Odd,I thought the rf modulator came standard with the 500.

Anyway, bought my first Amiga A500 in the spring of 1991 or1992 from the Sears franchise store in Aurora,Indiana.Someone had ordered it but never picked it up so the store owner had it on his "specials" table.Sears had it at a catalog price of $700 but Roy sold it to me for $199 as it had been in inventory too long. Hooked it up to a 19 inch color TV/monitor combo bought ($150 at clearance, naturally) at the Kroger grocery chain.Got a 512 memory and clock trapdoor card from some mailorder company for about $69.And later that summer a 1200 baud Amiga modem for $9.99 at the Swallen's  in Cincinnati,Ohio.
Test Drive,Tetris, and Amigaterm were most used.
   Still have the A500 .

I unwrapped my 1st Commodore Vic 20 from under the x-mas tree in 1981. The following year I had a c64 under the tree. Next came the c128. Then around the start of the school year in 1985 my father bought an Amiga 1000 from One Byte Computers in Uncasville, CT. By x-mas 1986 he was back at One Byte and bought himself an Amiga 2000 and me MY OWN (not shared with him or my brother) Amiga 500. Now I had MY OWN Computer in my room I started calling local bbs. I worked the entire summer of 87 to save for a US Robotics 9600 HST modem (something like $800 bucks). Needless to say there were not many local boards with HST capability so next came the long distance calls. After a few months of these I figured it was time to put up my own BBS. The board ran on the 500 for about a year. At that point my father agreed to split the cost with me for my own 2000. I only had about 1/4 of the money but promised I would pay him back the rest. (never happened) At this point life was great. I had a high speed modem so the board quickly grew and I had an endless supply of games for the 500. In 1991 I mail ordered (and paid for myself) my final Amiga a 3000T. I used it happily until 97 when I finally gave in and bought a PC. Somewhere along the line I gave away the 500 and sold the 2000 for pennies but the 3000T sat in my parents attic until last x-mas. I was home and saw her sitting there and with the help of everyone here she back up and running better than ever.

After saving up enough money from part time jobs, I bought my first Amiga (an A500) from a dealer booth at the World of Commodore in the Toronto International Centre in 1988!  I think another dealer was blowing out Supra 2400 baud external modems there for $99 as well, so I bought one (that was fast for 1988)!

First Amiga *I* owned is my A2000. Got it at a large flea market here for $20. Didn't use it much since it I didn't get a monitor with it, and the composite video out on it is pretty much a joke.

About a year later I happened to be talking to an acquaintance who said he had an A4000D. Bought it for like $40 or something. He new not what he had. :-D

My A500 I borrowed from another acquaintance. He had me clean it up for him after he'd neglected it (I think he spilled bong water in it or something, what a mess!). So I gave it back and told him if I ever saw it like that again I'd take it away from him. I borrowed it from him a few months later to test out some A1200 motherboards I bought off eBay (DOAs). Sure enough it was jacked up again. A month later he moved away, and never got it back.

Hmmm bought my A1k/1080 about 1986 from Micromart in Winnipeg, where I was working at the time. That was when the initial big price drop from $2995 to $1995 Cdn hit.

1990 Flight of Fantasy pack, bought at a computer shop in Bournemouth. Still have the Customer Care card but not the A500. I sold that, got a B2000, then an A600 then an A1200, then another A500. Then I sold the A1200 and got my A4000T. First and last Miggies bought new in the UK, rest bought new in SA (except for the second A500 which I wanted mainly for the monitor, and the seller wouldn't split).

I got my first Amiga at Soft Wares on Queen Mary Road in Montreal, on April 17, 1987.  I still have the receipt.

I paid $1800.00 Canadian for the A1000, A1050, and A1080 together, plus I bought Defender of the Crown for $50.00 and DMCS for $125.00, and a box of 10 DS/DD Goldstar disks for $34.00.

It was paid for with money that was left to me by my great aunt.

The A1000 was the first computer that was really mine and lived in my room.  There were already three other computers in the house: A PET 2001, a Microcom ][+, and a Commodore 64.

The A1000 and the A1200 that I bought in 1993 are still the only computers that I have ever purchased new from the store.
