Title: IDE : where is it gone ?
Post by: lionstorm on August 19, 2003, 07:56:02 AM
Hi all,
my system is A1200PPC+, BVPPC, OS3.9 in a power tower.
SCSI : one IBM HD 18Go
IDE : CD-RW burner, ZIP.
Everything was working until now but recently I got a filesystem upgrade big problem on the scsi HD. Now it is solved but the amiga will not boot if something is connected to the internal IDE port. I removed the PPC card and got the same problem. How can I solve this ? Ids there a program to test the integrity of the ide ?
In case the internal IDE is dead, what would be the alternative to still use my IDE devices (scsi-to-ide, fast serial port) ?
Thans in advance
Lio

Maybe it's just a glitch?

Ypu can use scasi->ide but it won't give you more thab 5-6 mB/s.

no software to check the integrity of the internal IDE port then ?

I'd say it might be the scsi-patch of the ppc-board that vanishes your ide devices (it gives the scsi.device name to the real ppc-board scsi), but since you unplugged the ppc, it might be something else.

You should have something to boot from, and the CD-RW doesn't seem the appropriate one. Try an old ide-HD with the boot partition below the 4GB area (if you haven't one with the OS3.5-3.9 installed yet).

Another thing you can try is to plug the ide device, and boot from the floppies, using the install disk wich has the hdtoolbox program. Open it and see if it can read the firmware of the ide device, and its' geometry.

@lionstorm

have you IdeFix for your Ide devices?

Try to play with IdeFixPrefs like boot delay and NoMount options.

Ciao

PS- check the integrity od IDE flat cable also.

@ Cass :
no old IDE standing here anymore because I put it inside my other A1200 desktop. I dont have df0 in my tower but df1 but the machine will not even initialise if something is connected to the ide.

@ Framiga : AFAIK I use the filesystem provided on the amigaOS3.9 CD (cacheCDFS I think) for the CD and Fat95 for the zip.

No one ever bother to make a test program for the IDE port ?? (without a HD connected).

Did you take a look to see if the jumpers between the cdrom and zip drive aren't the same?

Did you double-check that the ribbon cables are properly connected on both drives and Amiga interface?

Do you have an extra ribbon cable to test?

Did you try at least one of each to see if it boots up?

Did you reverse the jumper settings on both drives to see if that helps?

Can you test each drive on another Amiga with IDE to see if it isn't malfunctioning?

See if these process-of-elimination steps help.  If not you may have to revert to the older filesystem if a reinstall failed.  And, just out of curiosity, which filesystem did you use before using 3.9's filesystem?

Working again : looks like it did not like if no floppy drive is connected to the machine. Now I have to check whats wrong with the burner since my CD0, although is mounted without any error, I can not access the datas on CDs. Strange because I can mount the drive with the tool mounter, and also in makeCD and idefix tool findCD but no icon appear (and I did not hide it in the prefs).
Thanks anyway for the help.

PS : dont know which filesystem I used before, I have a few in my L:
