Forgive me Forum, it has been months since my last obsession...
So, what's happening, everybody?
-
three Hail mary's and One Our Father!
-
Unfortunately for me, my time is rarely my own at the moment. It's actually been some time since I actually even visited the site, let alone logged in. And to think I had it set as my homepage...
So, just been browsing the various threads. I see German is quickly becoming the second language of the board ;-)
What else is new?
-
i don't speak German, so I have no idea what is in those threads.
right now i'm just having a relaxing 4th of July (only important to americans. at least some of us)
-
Oh yeah.... Anyway, it's past midnight here, but happy Independence Day!
-
but it's only 7:20 PM here!
-
but it's only 7:20 PM here!
Yay! I am in the futures!
-
will it be better???
-
Well, some things could be better

i'll stick with fruit

what kind of fruit is that?
i just got home from parties. saw lots of my family and most of my wifes, no fireworks though.

I wouldn't call it German... Certainly none of the German board members seem to recognize it as such... :-D

Karlos wrote:

So what/who has been stealing your time? Any special work projects or new people in your life?
For me, I am trying to develop my engineering skills, and putting together my home music studio again.
Music is still lots of fun, though right now it is difficult enough just to finish making my synths, let alone actually finishing any tracks.
My friends and siblings are starting to pop out babies here and there, though I have never really felt the desire to be a father. This seems to concern a lot of people who are close to me, and quite a few who are not so close.
I am also looking for a new job. I have been working in the same job since leaving uni about 2 years ago, and I think a change of scene may do me some good.
Anyway, it's always nice to visit here again, and have a chat, though I am also not often frequenting this place.
To your health :pint:

And you're also not curious? I've always been curious what people are saying in another language. But it's so hard to learn every language in existance... :-S

Speelgoedmannetje wrote:

Me too, but my curiosity is limited to translating about three Germanish posts in a thread; beyond that, my brain can't be bothered.
My dad was fluent in German, but pretty much refused to teach me. He was actually a teacher, but I guess he needed a break from that after work. It still would have been handy to pick up the language when I was young and keen, and had plenty of free time.My dad was Australian, but when he travelled in Germany, he was asked several times which part of Germany he came from; apparently he had a very neutral accent.
Oh well, lost opportunity.

Not bad, just about to set off to the shops, wait a couple of hours, then set out to the trainstation to get to a curry night

Hm, I am not quite sure of the intended tone of this sentence. He was a good father, and taught me many things, but unfortunately not German.

I find it difficult to express myself in German, I did not mean to imply he was a bad man, only that it was odd/unfair of him to deny you the privilege of a second language when he was afforded such luxuary... I lament not being allowed to learn German as a child.
I will want for my own children to have at least two languages!

I can't understand much more than a general meaning in any language other than English. From what you wrote, I was pretty sure I had missed something, and no offense was taken.
I think language skills can really create a lot of opportunties. I was pretty keen to learn when I was a kid, and also had more free time than I knew what to do with.
These days I am more likely to pick up another programming language than a spoken one.
I learn bits of Mandarin here and there, but I haven't yet committed to any regular classes. My wife tried teaching me, for a time, though she found my questions too bothersome.

Pity I forgot to give you those books. Again :-/

Oliver wrote:

Work is taking up far too much time. Between my day job and side interests I have very little time to do anything other than eat and sleep.
As it happens, that's almost been a blessing as things have been a bit difficult this last year.
One of the biggest things outside of work has been my mum. After months of ignoring the warning signs and avoiding seeing her GP, last November she was diagnosed as having cancer. This came only a year after my uncle passed away suddenly which I still haven't fully got to grips with.
Anyway, the good news is that the growth was removed (all 7kg of it) and she's come through the surgery and subsequent chemotherapy, which has just finished. We're hoping that's the end of it but we won't know for many months yet.
After that there have been my own problems but they seem insignificant in relation to the above so I shalln't bring those up.
Things are starting to look up again, which is the main thing :-)
For me, I am trying to develop my engineering skills, and putting together my home music studio again.

@ Karlos
Hope your ma has no more problems with that, these things are difficult to manage and you can't predict how things will go. Holding thumbs for you, old bean.

I've been away for a year, but now I am back. How are you all doing?

The only thing I know in German is Extermeniren! I learned that from Doctor Who and the German speaking Daleks...

Can't say directly, but I could compose an ode ;)

persia wrote:

 when you see "iren" on the end of a word it shows that the word is a foreign work that has been absorbed... German, like English has no problem using a foreign word if need be :-)
-
X-ray wrote:

Wow, Karlos AND X-Ray back! I was going to write "so where is X-Ray" in an earlier post, but that just seemed like wishful thinking.
@X-Ray Did you ever end up coming down to Oz? Hope you you have been away for a good year, not a bad year.
I'm doing well enough. I am going for a job interview this afternoon (it's Mon 12:47 am here in Perth now). I am actually fairly happy with my current work, but I have to travel a long way every day, and the pay is not good enough (not good enough for my mortgage, or my wife, that is).
The new position will probably offer a bit more pay, and the location is good, but so far I haven't been at all impressed with the duties. Presently, I am designing electronics, but the new job seems to be more in the role of product evaluation, quality assurance, documentation etc.
Anyway, I will keep my mind open, and find out more of what the job is about. Hopefully the employer can tell me something better than how the job description reads.
Anyway, damn good to see both of you again!
:pint: To the health of you both :pint:
Cheers,
Oli

Yep, Oli, good to see you around also, and good luck with work!
I still have Oz or NZ in my sights, it's just not so simple anymore because I gotta think of prospects in London also.
At least wherever I go there will always be Amigas and Amiga users!

Whoa! The lost boy(s) return. WB X-ray and WB-ish Karlos (well, you were never that heavily away I think).

All things are relative. One could argue that a day without a post would be an absence when I was in my prime. Still, it was months between posts before I opened this thread. I should have been on my 2^14 th post by now :)
-
Good to see that you are still around.
I have been preoccupied with other things too. Moving among other things so my Amigas isnt in the new flat, some of the amiga stuff is at my dads house and the rest is at my sisters place. Its total moving chaos at the moment.
But on the bright side I finally got a hold off a little money, we sold some timber from the family farm. And things seem to be moving along in amigaland again with MOS 2.0, new stuff from individual computers and other things.

Hey all!
Sorry to hear about your mom Karlos... My grandma developed a bowel obstruction last year which turned out to be a tumor. I remember when she told me I almost cried into my f**king pizza. She's had a few months of chemo and had an op a few weeks back. Still in hospital, but recovering.
Mostly things are alright here. Could do with a few more friends in this town and had a painful girly experience at the start of the year. But I've been promoted, and even turned down a job at Hull uni, which everyone said should've filled me with pride, but I was so unsure about it all...
It's nice to see some familiar names here! :-)

Hey Punkie!
Well, my Grandfather died in March, and the other died last Thursday... so I guess we have to expect these things now... but the most disturbing thing is seeing my Grandmother has started to develop Alzheimer's... that's very odd, once the memory goes the person is gone.

Many of our European languages have adopted Latin words. I wouldn't be surprised if "Exterminate" is originally a Latin word.

"Painfully girly" experience could either mean an experience, possibly in prision, without proper preparation... Or a matter of the heart that went south... I suggest the latter :-)
