The CherryPal folks stripped out 80 per cent of the usual PC innards, leaving a case, a chip, a couple USB ports and a monitor port. The system runs on a Power architecture-based 400MHz Freescale mobileGT MPC5121e chip, ships with 4GB of Flash storage and has 256MB of memory.

That's quite similar to Genesi's Efika2. A 5121 based SoC design. Unfortunately Freescale's a bit delayed on the 5121, thus I expect to arrive these devices in autumn/winter.

So why would I want it over my iPhone.. which has similar specifications... but 8gig flash (soon to be 16 :-D) a modern, well supported web browser and is fully portable?
I honestly can't see what the hell CherryPal are trying to do here?

I think theyre trying to make computing as cheap as possible by making you store everything online? I don't really know either. I guess it would be good if you wanna run linux and carry a tiny computer around? *shrugs*

@bloodline
I bet I can write letters faster with a desktop computer connected to a proper monitor using a proper keyboard than you using a touch-screen :-)
I wouldn't like to use bittorrent/emule with an iPhone :-P

Hmmm... good point... But I write a hell of a lot of Emails and even this post on my iPhone... I'm pretty quick on it now...

I wouldn't want to use bittorrent/emule on that Cherry thingie either... it's not really suited to serious desktop usage... which is why I compared it to my iPhone and not my Mini-ITX (for example)

I don't see why it wouldn't be fine for bittorrent unless I guess you were using a Java client which tend to be pretty heavy

Are these the same people that made CherryOS?
Hidden domain registration, yada, yada.
It does have a logo resembling gonads though...
