Post by: Linchpin on August 17, 2003, 08:57:12 AM

I use Anarchiver for creating archives, supports lha, lzx and zip.
Aminet: util/arc/AnArchiver.lha

I have been thinking about writing a program that would be like WinZIP or PowerArchiver for AmigaOS & MorphOS, but I'm not sure how many would support it, would you pay for such a product? If so, how much?

No, no... don't make it that much Windows-alike, that you ask money from that simple program :) Although I think there are already several options in Aminet and one even with os3.9, I think. Anyway I use arcdir in Opus when I want to look inside the archives or run something from it without unpacking.. and if I want to unpack whole archive, I just hit one key shortcut in Opus :)

An old program called LhAWin exists.. I had it a long time ago, but it was not very good. Better to use something like DOpus.
LhAWin seems to be located on this (http://www.mbnet.fi/Apaja/Parhaat/jakso/index.asp?area=470&p=7) page however. I dont understand what the page says though, cause its in finnish.

An old Proggy called X-Arc was a windows style archiver for zip, lzx, lha and others via suitable plugins. Unfortunatly is was so slow and buggy it wasnt particuarly useful ;)

another calleed VoodooX for the XAD system looks nice, ,but unfortunalty unarc only.

so a suitable replacment combining the two would certainly be useful.

I used to use GUIARC about 10 years ago, but now I just use Dopus.

10 years ago??  :-o :-o

Geez, I'm getting OLD...

10 years and I went from Amiga OS 3.0 to 3.9... that's less than 0.1 a year

It's post 600, w00t!

I still use X-Arc.  It works like a champ here on all of my Amiga/Amigalike systems: (Amithlon, A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3, Pegasos).

I think only the demo is currently available now though :-/

I have test several and I find that BurnGUI is a good one, you can use zip, lha and lzx for both extracting and packing issues.

as has already been said dopus magellan with the right filetypes is really the best option, if that isnt available WizArc is a very nice little winzip type program.

Heh heh.. I wrote an ancient GUI for LHA ages ago - LHInterface. You can probably still find it on aminet. But I don't recommend it. :)

God I loved CanDo. Too bad they died after bringing out 3.01.

At least you got me to check what I have gathered during years...but not used. And I found it - MADS. Two AppIcons on WB, just drag and drop the object over there.

You'd have to register to the MBnet service to be able to download that file, and it's all in Finnish so might be a bit kinky if you don't understand Finnish....

You want WinZip on Amiga? get X-Arc............or WizARC, PERIOD!

WizARC is better, ut X-ARC looks like  a WInZip because of its large icons.  Also you can Use DiskMaster II  you can add lha and unlha as one of the options on the menu like the copy and extract lha. this is actually the best way that I know of on The Amiga and it is super Duper easy!
