I am about to start on a project of building a carputer. My aim was a itx pc with linux, or any os capable of running a nice dashboard... something similar to iTunes or winamp. and using OSD controls....
-
Linux should work well. A good WinAmp clone for Linux is called Audacious. The only thing it doesn't do is rip CDs so you'll need to do that with another program.

Might work. I was however planning on finding a software that more or less is the os and the dashboard in one unit. Booting into the dashboard and not any necessity for any input devices like mouse or keyboard.
Something like this (http://www.carcomputer.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=285&category_id=3&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26)
After a lot of googling i found this. and it might be interesting... And it is not expensive either...
Riping CDs i can do at home...
Most of my cds are already riped and stored on my computer...

That looks interesting, I wonder if it would work on an Intel based Mac Mini? That is what I am using for my Carputer. I have it hooked to a Lilliput 7 inch widescreen, touchscreen monitor that also has a vga input and two additional video inputs, so I can also connect it to my DVD capable 6 disk stereo system that can play DVD movies on one channel with the audio going to wireless headphones while the stereo plays the radio station of your choice on another channel through the 6 speakers plus sub-woofer.
I am still working on it as I bought a Carnetics DC to DC converter that has the Mac Mini PSU plug output, but have not taken the time to install it yet.
My used Mac Mini came with Vista installed on a separate partition and since the Mac does not have a good GPS navigation program available for it, I installed a Windows compatible program and boot into that when I want to use the GPS navigation system. I also have Amiga Forever and AmiKit installed for fun and games. The wifi built into the Mac Mini can reach my router from the garage to get updates, or even email if I wish.
I need to complete the install before my Amiga meeting/BBQ on the 21st so I can show it off to the other members that are attending.

There was a dashboard for Linux that worked on the Xbox.

@ trekiej
XBOX Media Centre worked great for an installation I did a while ago - Not the same without touchscreen though.
I was supposed to work on a touchscreen add-on, but got swamped on other projects :(

Should work. Flux Centrafuse still uses win xp as base os to handle drivers. but strip it down to its bare system, and remove absolute everything not essential for the operation. and install Flux Centrafuse to boot directly...
Not as standalone as i hoped. But i am still looking...

Has anyone ever made an A600 or CD32 "carputer"?
Now that would be a cool project! :-D

If the amiga was fast enough to handle mp3s, mpgs and compatible with OBD software and GPS. I would build one.

When I built a carputer I used windows XP and had it hibernate when the ignition was switched off. (Also allowed for quick booting) I had a 7 inch touchscreen to control it and used soem GPS software and a serial GPS receiver. All worked rather well :) Played music, movies, DVDs, audio CDs.
However, I did write a custom app to do all the fancy stuff, never really finished, but it was in there and working. I have since sold the system to a mate of mine since I never really used it much beyone playing MP3s from a CD, so just got a cheap MP3 player in the car instead.
