Title: How quick is the A1200 IDE interface
Post by: stefcep2 on June 07, 2008, 07:12:52 AM
I have been using my A1200 with a type II compact flash card.  Its got Apollo 68040 at 40 mhz and 32 meg ram.  When I cold boot-no kidding- it takes 5 seconds. This with MUI, magic Menu, toolsdaemon, click to front, toolmanager, executive, DOpus4 installed.

I thought i'd try with a bare bones 3.1 installation on 40 meg connor hard drive: it took 8 seconds. I always thought the A1200 interface was slow, but really it was the hard drive holding it back.

The question is If i use a type III compact flash will it boot faster still?

No, it won't be faster. Both your HDD and the CF card already outrun the IDE bus. The HDD needs three seconds longer because it has to spin up and reach its nominal rotation speed before it can start reading files. The CF card initialises immediately, so there is no such delay.

The IDE bus does not transfer more than 2 or 3 MB per second.

Bye,
Thomas
