Title: Buyer beware!
Post by: amigadave on June 07, 2008, 05:39:18 AM
I found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250255423884) the other day and wrote to the seller to tell him that he is mistaken about his item having anything to do with the Amiga, it is just a 386sx on an ISA card and his claims were incorrect.  Below is his reply, so I think you should all beware any dealings with Don Lee, aka "Demo" & demopoly1 on eBay.

Begin forwarded message:

Hi Dave,

Okay, I'll be sure to block you on all future transactions.

Thanks for your hostility.

It is laughable that he thinks it is worth $399 Before he changed the auction details, I think it said it was a 12mHz 386sx.

Well, I am glad that someone appreciates that it is misleading and not that I am being too "Anal".  I really only contacted the guy to give him a chance to correct the listing, but after he wrote that reply to me, I really let him have it in my last message to him.  He ticked me off.

at the bottom of the page of the listing of that item you find a "report" button, I suggest you guys use it. I used it to inform Ebay that the listing has a misleading title and item description. I'm sure that if more people report this they will not be able to ignore it :)

Heh, zero feedback seller. Anyone silly enough to buy an expensive item from those probably deserves to be burnt.

Gee who could it be?  Doomy comes to mund.
Crackpot claims like "can be used for cad" is consistent with his style.

It's doomy - That's axactly the same rude obnoxious kind of message that he sent me on another auction. He just opens new accounts to post, new auctions. This guy should have been busted by the FBI by now.

Federal Fraud laws related to interstate commerce should apply. I urge anyone who's been burnt to report him to the authorities.

I used to work on/with systems that used those type cards. You had a overly large pc case that would accept 8 or more cards. The outputs of each card would connect by loooooong cables to a monocrome terminal on user's desk. They would run text/field based apps like word processing and spread sheets as if they had a full pc at their desk. If I recall, it was a bit cheaper to use this setup than to put a box at everyone's desk. The last ones I remember came with CGA color.

I like the seller's comment saying that more photo's cost money. Yeah right, like you can't email for free. What's he doing? Developing 8*10 glossys in his own dark room? :-P

Have you tried that link?  All I get to is a FAQ page and no actual report is generated!

That's true. Nothing about a report happens.

@beller

You honestly think ebay would make it that easy for you to report any suspect auctions.
That they actually employ enough staff to deal with all the "suspect" auctions that exist.
They would rather show you a nice FAQ page that puts you off from going any further.

ebay (like everyone else)police their sites to the min requirements, maintenance always has the lowest budgets.

From the auction:
Quote

Used with video toaster and other high-end Amiga applications

Allows Amiga to run some PC software. No info found on Google or Wiki about this card.

Never used! Has been in dry storage for last 8 years

I did indeed try the report link. I even got an e-mail from ebay:

Hey, if someone wants something like this for free then I have all of the internals from an old Heathkit from the early 80's.

Both cards from the system look like ISA and one is the CPU/video. I don't have the cards in front of me, but theres a second card that I don't remember what it does. I think the CPU is an 8088.

I also have the Zenith service/assemble manual that went with the computer that the cards came in originally. It has all of the board's schematics in it.

Email if you're interested.

After you pick a fraudulent listing, it will end up with an option to "E-Mail eBay", which will report the item and your concerns.

@Amigadave
Many thanks. Your work IS appreciated!

I e-mailed him myself and this was his reply (with censoring):

"HOLY S**T, someone wrote me *politely*!!! SOB, I am totally shocked by this message after all the fanboys have flamed at me. Is it possible, that you do NOT know amigadave?

THANK YOU for at least showing some manners and professionalism. I have corrected the ad already.

Demo"

Still not changed by the looks of things.

My first messages were very friendly just asking for more information and then telling him he had made a mistake and that this card doesn't really have anything to do with an Amiga other than it would fit into an ISA slot.

He has sent me 3 more threatening emails since and still won't admit he is wrong.

I am going to block his email address as I have no need to read what he has to say anymore.

He is an arrogant "bleep" that I have reported, but as others have said, eBay won't do anything about it.

At least I warned a few of you about his lying ways and attitude.

Also, I don't think it is Doomy, I have received Doomy's wrath before and can tell the difference.

Suprisingly it's not Doomy as he always insists on cash transactions and never uses paypal.

Would be interested to see the other emails just for the lol factor.

One question though, CAN the card function on an Amiga or is that total BS?

I realise it was not ever developed for or likely ever used on one, but the auction is only incorrect if there is no hope it could ever function in an Amiga at all.

The ISA slots in an Amiga are inactive. They have only power connected to them. No data lines are connected to the Amiga side at all. They are only used by a bridgeboard. So if you connected a bridgeboard to an Amiga and then put this card in one of the ISA slots, and if you could find software for this ISA card which would run on the bridgeboard, then it might work. But I think it's very unlikely that it would work.

yes, it would work as a signle board computer, totally independent from amiga. I wonder if you can use the boards at other ISA slots ? maybe it will master the ISA bus ?

however, you can find much better spec boards at ebay with lower prices. there nothing 'rare' or hard to find about it. check ebay, keyword is 'single board computer'. here is a pentium 4 (http://cgi.ebay.com/iBase-IB820-P4-Intel-845GV-SBC-Single-Board-Computer_W0QQitemZ300230601122QQihZ020QQcategoryZ1244QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) board at the fraction of the price.

But how would you control it? There are no PS\2 ports so you can't connect a keyboard or mouse. Presumably on a *supported* machine these functions would be provided by software, passing the host computer's keyboard and mouse events to the ISA card via the ISA slot.
