Title: Amiga ToolBar.
Post by: flaviosr on June 02, 2008, 02:30:51 PM
Hi!

I would like to use OS3.5 instead than OS3.9 with my A1200... the 68030 is fair but OS3.9 with it is a bit slow!
What I would going to miss more is the toolbar...
Do exist other free toolbars to use? If so, which is the best one?

Basically, No.

And this is a problem I have too...

The only alternatives are AmiStart (which ISN'T a dock), ToolManager which never works (Only works with NewIcons I think), and other than that theres nothing thats free that works as well as AmiDock for non-OS3.9 systems...!

Someone should write one.. ;-)  ;-)  ;-)  ;-)  ;-)  ;-)

 :-(

ToolManager works with MUI and needs no NewIcons AFAIK (and versions up to 2.x don't even need MUI).

Never tried that on anything above WB3.1 tho, sorry. But I think it should work.

@SKAN:

What I meant is, I think it ONLY works with NewIcons, I can never get icons such as icons used with AfA OS or PowerIcons to work... :-(

Infact I can't even get the NewIcons to work... This is the version that is included with "Amiga Forever" so it may be a different version (an old version perhaps?)....

3.5 is going to be just as slow as 3.9. The two have essentially the same add-on components, only the 3.9 ones are newer. Use 3.1 if you need a speed boost.

There's a very old dock system also called AmiDock (no relation to the one in 3.9). Should be on Aminet.

Yeah, there was an AmiDock ages ago, I used that on my old A500+A590 setup! (sweet memories...)
Only issue I had it guru'ed many times when trying to launch apps from partitions other than the boot one IIRC...

The version of ToolManager bundled with AF is 2.2 IIRC, you can get 3.x from Aminet as well.

@flaviosr

Get ToolsDaemon! thats ToolsDaemon NOT ToolsManager.
it basically gives you a Start Menu on the top instead of the bottom or more precisely, just adds all you applications the top menu you already have. Its faster than anything of its kind on the Amiga because it doesnt add graphics which weigh down the OS. Get it with Magic Menu, it makes ToolsDaemon look better.

If you want to waste ChipRam (Aka gfx memory)  with some sort of nice dock....you can cheat by simply redisgning your icons to look good if you dragged then close to each other, and once you do that, simply use the "Leave Out" command on the menu to leave your favotire apps on the Workbench screen, and it will look like a Dock but run as smooth as all you other icons.

I'll add my recommendation for ToolsDaemon, too. It's among the first utilities I add to any Amiga I set up, and I sorely miss it on other platforms. I'd love to get rid of my Mac OS X dock altogether, frankly.

Hi!

Thanx to all... I will try them all...
And I am seriously thinking about leaving OS3.1... :-o

If someone else hadn't mentioned it, I would Have.

ToolsDaemon - it is really fast, configurable and not memory intensive. It Rocks.

Make sure you get the latest version - earlier versions had to be patched on OS3.9, as it was an Arexx script (IIRC). The latest version isn't patched and works brilliantly.

I've tried other but they cause problems on my system, including memory loss!!!!!!

That's not particularly difficult to do. If you need help, send me a PM and I'll give you instructions on how to go about banishing it permanently.
