It is going to be a movie!

Can anyone recall a movie based on a video game that didn't stink? I actually though Doom was ok for a late night saturday DVD rental. How long untill HalfLife hit's the big screen?

I don't see how useful it is to for "it's going to suck" to be the first thing out of anyone's mouth.

Statistically, I think it's pretty reasonable :-)

I think 'Resident Evil' movie is not bad, haven't seen the sequel, though.. (if there is one)

Country: USA
Language: English
Color: Color
Filming Locations: Morocco
Not very much Persia it is, eh?
They could as well filmed it in the Nevada desert.
something with diplomacy

Well as Persia no longer exists and is now known as Iran I think choosing a different location is only wise.
For some unknown reason not many American films get filmed in Iran... can't think why!

There's is alot of talk about Half Life being a movie in a sort of 3rd person view. Meaning there will be several viewpoints from the scientists, guards, soldiers, alians etc. Plus it gives you infomation and stories that the game never had giving it a complete feeling, well that is the theroy. This is excellent as in the HL games your mostly fixed to one viewpoint. Best part is there can be an easy sequal so a real moneyspinner can be made, just hope that theres a damn good director.
The only con is set costs and casting will make it one of the most expensive films of all time, though if they pay their cards right then it may well be one of the best films of all time.

Is the Prince of Persia film going to be an hour long and consist of someone running through corridors and infuriatingly falling in to pits of spikes and getting chopped in half over and over again?
And speaking of other films based on computer games, I thought the first Resident Evil film was pretty good, but the second one was pretty absurd. Haven't seen the third one. I was seriously disappointed with the Doom film. I was about to launch into a tirade about it, then remembered I have already done it here (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19339) ;-)
On a more positive note I thought the film version of Silent Hill was amazing.

I'll have to agree here, Silent Hill was a brilliant Game->Film conversion... A fantastic film in so many ways... the fact that I found the game a load of cr*p might have helped... :-D

Well actually I have never played the game. I just thought the film was brilliant :-) It was closer to the tense atmosphere of Doom (the game) than Doom (the film).

Oh and BTW in Silent Hill (the film) the noise you hear after the siren when everything turns evil is *luvverly* :-)

Some of the later Prince of Persia games have enough story and context that it could be used to flesh out a movie. It's possible it may not suck.
Historically, though, most times the video game and movie mediums have crossed (games to movies, movies to games) things have ended in deep hurting.

Quit marginalising my fond memories of Prince of Persia, Moto

I always thought that the original Mortal Kombat movie was pretty entertaining. Definitely not perfect, but still pretty fun to watch.

@ Tokyoracer
This has kinda of already been done. have you not played the blue-shift ( from the securtiy guards point of view) and opposing force (from the army's point of view)
Both really good expansions to the original half life

I don't think your fond memories came from the gameplay ;-) While I found the animation totally amazing the first time I played it, I thought the game itself was really frustrating.

eh, ahem,
eh, *cough*
no, not all fond memories, no...
I just got something with princes... maybe it's because of the Tunisian prince suit I got when I was but little, from my mom after she went to Tunisia.

I never thought it being frustrating, not at all. I was rather good at it, the game was very precise, but I also play very precise.
Plus there were not many sword fighting games, and I desperately wanted sword fighting games (still do)
