Title: A500 Plus Problem
Post by: scuzzb494 on May 15, 2008, 10:35:14 PM
Hi

A friend gave me his A500 Plus today to see if I could
get working. The machine has no floppy activity and when
switched on flashes 5 from the power light then on the
sixth is a long flash and even longer on the seventh.
Then the monitor goes black and then back to grey
and the cycle starts all over again. I haven`t popped
her open yet, but being a Plus I reckon the battery
has leaked all over the motherboard....

Anyone come across that sequence of flashing before ?

First order of business is crack it open and remove the leaking NiCad battery!!!!

Then clean any damage.  Then reseat all socketted chips.

Report back.

Hi

As suspected when I stripped the A500+ back I found the
battery had leaked. Fortuantely I had a spare motherboard
so I swapped it out and she's working just fine now...

Eeek. Looks pretty bad. Still worth cleaning up, though; it could be salvagable.

Hi

SERIOUS PLEA

Sorry for shouting. I just got a mail from a guy who was adamant that neither the A500 or A500+ had a battery. This is not true.... First up the A500 could have a barrel battery on the expansion card in the trap door and the A500+ is fitted with the dreaded barrel battery on the motherboard.. Just look at this picture.

Please, please if you have an A500+ in your collection then go get that battery off. We run the risk of losing the vast majority of these computers to this problem otherwise.
