Sounds like he doesn't know anything about Amigas. Somebody should let him know you can't upgrade an A500 to an A1200...

Looks as if there's a Viper 520 onboard, maybe that's the "upgrade"? Would be a steal then if you grab that for 20 quid :-)

Where do you see that? I can't. (PS: Never mind, found it)
Maybe someone's put an A1200 board into the A500 case?
-
hmmm could be?

It wasn't upgraded. It was uprated. :-D

Oh, come on. The guy used a magic marker on the box. How much harder can it be than that?!

When I bought my first A500 years ago second hand, the seller said he had upgraded the 512k memory to 1Mb so had upgraded it to an "A1000"

Maybe he'll accept payment in £5 notes with the 5 scored out and replaced with a 20...

Oh, that's awesome. I'm getting a marker and upgrading my 1200 to a 4000!

Damn, why didn't I think of this?? I have a sharpie right here, I'm going into my garage to make an old 386 server tower into an A3000T!

Most probably the original guy who had that amiga (he says a friend of him had it),upgraded os to 3.0 with a new rom. That's why he gives away the disketes labelled os 3.0 and so on.I would assume the previous seller did not know and thought that by changing the rom to 3.0 would make this amiga 500 in to an a1200.
Not all people know about that.He could have been fooled into it.Just a mistake.
In a more relaxed and humor style way i would say he is not wrong 100%.
What is an upgraded amiga today?some would say one amiga that could run amiga os 4.0. (note the joke: one amiga=amiga one hahaha, one amiga that could run amiga os 4 or amiga one that could run os 4.0 ?)
To run amiga os 4.0 you need to invest into very expensive cards. So we are talking about phase 5 ppc card,cybervision64 or piccaso iv cards, mediator and other stuff, usb like deneb, towers, scsi cards and other things.
Does this amiga os 4.0 machine have anything in common with the original Amiga 1200 machine? :-D
Let me tell you! No,the 680x0 processor isn't used in os 4.0.Most os 4 users don't use aga screens anymore, neither paula, most would have a soundblaster(through a mediator of course),or if lucky a delfina card.Kickstart isn't used as i can assume that os 4.0 loads custom kickstart for ppc use.So what is left?Noone would use the onboard ide,so we are talking about idefix or phase5 scsi peripherals.
So in a way a1200 acts simply as a passive connector to the phase 5 ppc card that utilizes other gfx card by the way and again all sorts of alien hardware connected there.
In the same humorous way an a500 with kick 3.0 could be considered to have something in common with a1200 :-)
Don't forget:Computers in our times are characterized by the operating system they can run.So this amiga with the 68020 and os 3.0 can run amigaos 3.0.
Just a humorous post for fun do not take it so seriously:)

He hurt himself by writing on the box...

I could staple wheels to my legs, but it wouldn't make me a wagon. :-P

I think you are right. Looks like it has an 020 accelerator and 3.0 roms, so it's "close" to A1200 specs. Missing AGA chip set of course and who knows maybe it even has a DKB 2meg Chip Ram expansion in there! :-D

What if the guy did upgrade to a 1200 and kept it in the 500 box... Then later put his 500 back in the box. There are a million reasons... What the guy really is selling is an A500 with a box that has been written on.
Still think its worth buying to find out.

Hi
Thanks for the heads up. Certainly worth it.
Hi
Back from London and with the Viper 520 CD
Turns out this was the property of an old computer
geek who died recently. The wife was going to bin
it, but Mike, the guy I met suggested he put it on
Ebay. He had no idea what it was and didn`t put
the writing on the box. He also gave me two boxes
of computer bits and another PC. Great guy.
Viper 520 CD
Compact board with a mounting bay for an
internal 2.5" hard drive.
68EC020 33MHz CPU

Integrated 4 units IDE adaptor
3 IDE connectors, 1 x 2.5", 2 x 3.5"
for up to 4 devices, ATAPI devices available
Optional ATAPI software used
Socket for 68882 co-processor up to 33 MHz

On the 20th October 1999 the board cost £99.95
and the 170MB 2.5" Seagate 2.5" drive cost £45.95
With parts and labour all in all cost £200.90p which
I gotta say was cheap in its day.
