Arghhh...
I was just spending a few minutes with my newly acquired A2000.
I have quite a few disks, and was attempting to try a few.
After several disks didn't work, read errors and the like, the disk icon now just says DF:0 BAD.
The icon remains the same even if the disk is removed.
The icon remains even after restarting the workbench, with no disk in the drive.
The icon remains the same even if I disconnect the drive, of course the machine is powered off and unplugged, and restart the machine.
What happened?
The drive is dead?
The controller is dead?
I am dead and just haven't realized it?
Any ideas? How can I remedy this problem?
I have an external drive that seems to work, should I scavenge it for the drive?
Cursing didn't help...I"m off to work, any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a disc cleaner?
Have you tried another floppy cable in case its that?
It may be that your floppy drive has had it.
Try
http://wwww.amigakit.com
They will sort you out. But tell them what version of mobo you have they will need that.
Mike.

The drive cleaner disk is a good idea. Run that a few times and also use a can of air in there to blow out any cruds.

The icon remains the same even if the disk is removed.
Check the mobo chips : CIA, fuses, etc...
-
DF:0 BAD
Maybe that's a clue. I woulda expected "DF0:".
-
Nope...
Just a typo...
"DF0:BAD" ...

Check the mobo chips : CIA, fuses, etc...
OK, I'm game...
How do I go about 'checking' the CIA chips?
What fuses am I looking for?
-
the usual way to test CIA chips is to swap them and see if something other doesn't work (keyboard, no boot, etc.).
I think its just the cable.
-
Or may be an old virus !!!
Try an empty system if you can (no hdd, no eflash....), just the floppy with its cable (are sure of the sense ? does it damaged or twisted ?)
If you have an external drive and kick >1.3 try to go in the early and try to boot on it.
-
Hmmm...
The external drive works.
I had to sort through quite a few disks, I guess I have lots of dead ones.
Can I assume that everything else is ok? CIA, fuses, etc?
I now have a new question...
Should I not be able to access the/an early startup menu?
Nothing happens when I hold both mouse buttons down at boot time.
I am certain the mouse is good. I received it from amigakit when I ordered my a1200 a while back.

gee join the club l am in the same boat so to speak call it
the gee l wish floppy drives dont suck club.
l think the drives are old know the machines l got had very dusty df0 drives . the external drives l got all seem fine but then u cant boot games of them , ive tryed.
very frustrating as love to try the software l got with these machines but scared l just wreak all the discs.
l suggest if you have newer machine like amiga 1200 trying that drive in the 2000

I've had that twice before, one internal drive & one external.
Internal, the drive was cactus, threw it out.
External, the controller PCB had lifted tracks, fixed with some soldering.
I figure, as stated above, it could also just be the cable, but I reckon it's probably not anything on the motherboard. Easier for a drive with working parts & such to get worn out, etc.

does the FDD make any sound? when you insert diskette?
if not, check the power connector on drive, it usually breaks , move it a bit. (might need resoldering)
-
I am convinced the drive is dead...
I have ordered a floppy simulator cable.
I will order a replacement floppy drive and a few new disks from Amigakit.
1. I hope to connect a winblows PC to the internal floppy connector in my A2000.
2. I hope to use my external drive to create a few working disks from images on my HD.
Yes I have bought a several software titles, knowing that the old disks probably don't work...
3. I will reconnect the internal drive with the replacement.
Play some old games? The damn machine is only an OCS model...
Whats wrong with me anyways?
Yep... I still have a lot of questions about my A2286.
I will be visiting a friend who owns a shop and snooping around for some old ISA stuff. Damn...
-
Hi,
so my advice :
open the external drive, and pickup drive and its data cable and put it in the A2000 and tell us what happen.
OCS so you might have kick 1.3 and no early kick...
and if you have a bunch of dead floppy drive, i can try to make some relive :rtfm:
-
Heya...
I would guess that I do have kickstart 1.3.
I was wondering if there was a relationship between that and the early startup menu.
I had considered upgrading the kick roms, but thought it wouldn't be too helpful.
I was planning to play some old games, not break the bank.
I had a look at the external drive, and decided not take it apart any further. I will wait until my PC-AMIGA cable arrives, and see what that does for me.
I also have to plans to...
1. use an ISA video card, though I'm not sure why.
2. use an ISA network card, file transfers?
Ahh well, time to spend some quality time with the wife, at least I know what all the pieces do, if only she'll let me near...
