Title: How far would you go to save a miggy?
Post by: Hodgkinson on May 13, 2008, 04:04:42 PM
Heh, sigh. Just been to the local tip and saw an A500 (box) under a spin dryer in one of the skips. :boohoo:

Just wondering how far anyone here might go to save a miggy from the grim reaper :devildance: ? E.g., how bigger a skip would anyone be prepared to salvage miggies from? Which miggies would you be prepared to salvage? Under what conditions?

Hodgkinson.

i dunno, would depend on what it was. i still feel even the humblest A500 deserves more than to be landfill. a big box machine could house untold treasures, ah-hargh my hearties...

i would be a little hacked off to find the A500 packaging empty if i'd shifted that dryer though...

Hi there

Pardon me for being an ignorant American here ;-)  But is the 'local tip' a laundromat?  And what are 'the skips'?

Just curious.

I think the skips are a landfill or dump site.

AHA! A dumpster. So there was an Amiga under a dryer in a dumpster. I've got it now.

I would definitely not be a nesh jobsworth and would put on my kecks and grab a bumbershoot and get into that skip for that miggy. :-D   Sorry I couldn't resist.

Please don't tonk me too hard in the Knackers for that one though. :-P

Of course I'm probably being too much of a Spod with this post.

I'm not above grabbing any Amiga out of a dumpster or whatever.  I'd go as far as I see one.  I mean, I'm not going to be routing around in the trash on just a random chance of there being an Amiga or something.    But if I see one, yeah, it'll come home with me.  I usually prefer to pick them up at businesses that are removing them before they make the actual bin, though.  That is usually a more optimal solution for all parties involved.  :-)

What is a bumbershot?

Bumbershoot - Archaic Noun for Umbrella. Some credit to the upper class of Britain.

The word is not commonly known by anyone in Britain and some credit it to early America.

I actually, threw that one in to see who was paying attention.  :-D You get the gold star.  :-)

Thanks for the insight!

The A500 I saw was at the local tip (E.g., A place for disposing of stuff larger than will fit in the average dustbin/Garbage can). It was right at the bottom of, well, it’s not a skip, more like a reinforced articulated lorry back with the top removed kinda size. You get the idea, eg, you’d have to jump in and get a rope ladder to get out again. There was a really nice looking audio amp kinda gizmo in there to, but unfortunately the situation goes way beyond what im prepared to do. If the thing had been full, maybe the stuff could have been pulled of the top, but at the time it was only just 1/4 full.

I limit myself (Active thought required here…) to what I can reach, drag, grab, or rummage safely from the edge of whatever it’s in.

And, as you folks mentioned, there was no guarantee there was even a A500 in there, and if there was, the way the dryer must have landed would have destroyed a good chunk of the left side of the case. :madashell:
Getting them before they go to these places still beats the hell out of routing for somthing, though :-D

Keep on posting  :-D
Hodgkinson.

If it was boxed and not submerged/covered with something dangerous or nasty, I'd snag most Amiga gear.

If it was an A2000, 3000, 3000T or 4000, I'd dive in regardless*.

*=no poo or body parts, plus it would have to be at least visually intact, eg not crushed down...so I guess I wouldn't go that far...

More or less what I'd do, or at least be thinking  :-D

Ah, but what if there was an amazing trap door expansion in there that survived the rest of the crush and now it is on the way to the dump.

I have to say I'm disappointed Hodgkinson.  *CHUCKLE*

If I ever get a chance to go "dumpster diving" for an Amiga. I'm going to take the opportunity but you see, Amigas aren't common enough around here for that to happen.

Yeah, but there could of been no A500 there at all, just packaging (Actually it looked kinda flattened, so thats what I assumed).

As long as I don't lose a limb or seriously injure myself, I'll go through just about anything to save an Amiga, even though I'll be hesitant at first if it involves wading through sewage, jumping over a crevass or running through fire, I'll still probably do it.

There isn't much that would prevent me from going after amiga gear. It could be an a500 in a dumpster full of screenings from a sewer plant. I love dumpsters, I've been regularly hopping cans for over 15 years. I still go on weekly dumpster runs. You never know what you'll find in there.

There was this computer shop where I used to hit the dumpster pretty regularly and one day I decided to raid it during the day because the previous night I ran into some other guys who were raiding it. (cool dudes though) I hopped in that sucker and closed the door most of the way and went about my business. I was busy unearthing a laser printer when the door opens. The guy just stared at me holding a bag so I reached my arms out and he handed it to me. Then he just walked off like it never happened. That was the best dumpster ever. I've pulled out dozens of macs, c64's, apple IIs, printers, lots and lots of PCs, monitors, etc.

Sadly never an amiga. I've never found any Amiga gear in the trash nor have I found one in a thrift store either. The last time I saw an Amiga in the wild it was around '93. A lone amiga 2000 sitting on a table in a hallway at school getting ready to be tossed.  :-(

I'd say I'd go as far as a string is long.

I'd grab an amy from the dumpster if I saw one... The peecee I'm using now was left on the side of the road for trash pickup. It's only a PIII/550 mhz machine, but it was better than what I was using. Came with a nice Sony 17" monitor too.

Last time I saw an Amiga at a thrift shop was many years ago at the GoodWill. I bought a 1000 for 6 bucks, because I needed a floppy drive for my original 1000. When i got the thing home and found that it still worked, i couldn't bring myself to part it out.

The local gov sponsors a e-waste recycling drop-off. I've been meaning to see if they let folks paw thru the junk over there..

body parts and poo can often be a reason to dumpster dive!

I thought Dumpster Diving for Amigas was something every Amiga user practiced. I guess it depends on the area you live in.
Around here, there are loads of federal offices, and electronics firms. Good pickins, in other words...

Ugh, true confession time: With the economy as bad as it is, and no resale shops or rummages left in my area, I will dumpster dive for pretty much anything interesting.. not just Amiga's ... never actually found a miggy in the trash,.... but  I got an old Maxi-Korg 'polyphonic' synth (assuming poly means exactly two voices) , cheesy late '70's drum machine, and an AM/FM/turntable with built-in 'Disco' lights, all within 2 blocks of my house, within the span of a month. Not a bad score, particularly for those with no taste  :-P

Aslong as it isn't under a ton of rubbish i'd fish a 500 out. I think a 500 is just as deserving for rescue as a prototype 3600 or something.

@tokyoracer:

Yeah but how useful is an A500?

If your not using it for games... not very. I suppose it would be cool to get an A500 and try installing UCLinux (http://users.telenet.be/geertu/Download/#uclinux) although it would probably be easier just to install WB2.0 and have it boot to command line (if thats possible)...

Well, I've fished out, amongst other things, USB Zip drives, RF Amplifiers, Camera PSUs, a few fully working Macs (One with a 68LC040), an Xfade LMX-907R Preamp mixer, dot-matrix colour printer, 100ft of high quality stereo stage audio cable and enough fluro light fittings to do up our garage with... And that was all out of one particular skip that kept on re-appearing over the years

Must be a TARDIS skip...What with all the modern tech and all

Live in hope that I'll manage to save a miggy some day, though.
