Title: 1680 x 1050 with a P-IV card on an LCD screen... how ??
Post by: Kristian95 on May 10, 2008, 05:31:07 AM
I have a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW lcd screen and would like to run my OS3.9 workbench at 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz... I have tried to do that without success... can anyone guide me or help me with the correct settings to achieve this ??

Does the Picasso IV have nearly enough memory to display that resolution?

I just checked. I think the maximum that card could do with only 4 MB of memory is 1280x1024@24 bit depth.

IIRC the P-IV card can display 1600 x 1200 at 256 colours, in which case it ought to be able to display 256 colours at 1680 x 1050 too, right ??

You didn't say whether you have a problem to find the right timings so that the monitor recognises the resolution or if you have memory problems i.e. you cannot open test screens or something like that.

For the timings you could try my settings for a Mediator / Voodoo setup with a HP w2207h monitor:

Regarding memory, 1680 x 1050 means 1,764,000 pixels. With 8 bits (one byte) per pixel this would need 1.7 MB which should perfectly fit into the 4 MB of gfx memory. Even 16 bits per pixel (3.4 MB) could perhaps fit if you open only one screen and don't use a background picture.

If it does not work, you could decide to use a smaller 16:10 mode like 1280 x 800 or so.

Bye,
Thomas

I am able to make a test screen but I have never been able to make one that actually displays on my monitor... the odd thing is that when I use the Picasso config program (sorry can't remember the name of it) it is a bit strange when I fiddle with the vertical frequency... there is the frequency tab I can change and then the "computed frequency" and in order to have a refresh rate between 60 and 75 Hz (the maximum for my screen) I have to fiddle with the one I can change so it is around 33-35 or so... really strange. When I initially enter the values it shows as 60 on both sides but won't let me do a test of the resolution :(

EDIT: What vertical rate should I expect to use when trying for 1680 x 1050 ??

I futzed with P-IV settings to tweak out 1280x1024x24 for a while.  I'm booting up now to make sure, but I believe that the 1600x modes are all interlaced (icky.)  Some time will have to be spent playing with various timings and settings like I did to get my favorite resolution setting.  I never played with 1600x because I wanted 24-bit color (picky beyotch that I am. :-))

(I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I have been away from my 4000 for so long that I just caught myself looking for the START button.  I'll be flogging myself for hours tonight for this offense.)

When I opened PicassoMode96 I got a warning about settings versus hardware limits of the video board. heheheh  Anyway, I see two 1600x1200 modes here, 256colors and HiColor, both of which are set for Interlace.

Good luck on finding the right combinations, and remember to post back here when you succeed.

Ah, interlace... I'll try that one out... does the interlace matter since the P-IV board has a SD-FliFi ??

I just tried with the interlace option too, no dice... it just doesn't work... maybe because my P-IV ROM version is _very_ old ??

Perhaps my Picasso settings help out? I have a Samsung with a Voodoo5 though...
I mentioned it in this (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=20970) link aswell.

Unfortunately your setup screen looks completely different from the one I get when I use PicassoMode96 so I cannot easily duplicate your settings.

You would want P96 2.1b I guess. Don't know the detailed story here, but 'officially' this was only meant for Prometheus boards. Works for Mediator setups too though. You can get it here (http://amiga.serveftp.net/downloads.html).

I just tried that version of PicassoModeTNG, alas to no avail, it yielded same result.

According to the manual of the samsung 226bw, 1680x1050
resolution needs the following settings:
horizon freq 65,290
verticalfreq 59,954
pixel clock  146,250
polarity (h/v)  -/+

Lloyd

I'll give it another try *feeling stupid for not looking in the monitor manual*

hmmm, I tried again and there is no way I can get all the values at the correct level at the same time :(

The big book of amiga hardware (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=468) says
in 8 bit mode the piv has a pixel clock of 135 Mhz.
I'm afraid you have to settle with a lower resolution
on your 226bw.
