Title: DD->HD?

Is it true that when using HD disks formatted as DD they start to self-disintegrate much faster than a pure DD disk? I've heard that they might only last a year or two.. Is this so?

The disks don't physically disintegrate, but the data stored on them is much more volatile. So yes, it's true unfortunately.

HD's use a larger magnetic field than DD's so DD's aren't made to be as resistant as HD's.

Using HD's as DD's is generally ok (I've been doing that for years and only had one disk out of about 200 screw up, but it was a really old disk anyway) but using DD's as HD's will only be good for a very short time.

I didn't know this but found out, to my cost, when I
entrusted a MED module to a HD disk formatted as DD. It corrupted as did the backup copy on another disk and I lost a module I'd been working on for a long time. It also probably had something to do with the dying Chinon drive in the 500 I had.
I always thought that DD disks were just HD disks that had failed a few read/write tests and so were
inferior quality - so how come HD disks more prone to errors when formatted as DD?

It's because they have different coercivity. Check the table here:

Something just breaks down on a microscopic level if you format a HD floppy to DD capacities :-(

drillin or puching a hole in a DD to make it a HD works but why bother run to wal-mart and get a stack of HD for dirt

Yup, I exlpained that in my first post in this topic, I thought I'd make a little joke :-)

Besides, it does work..... for about 5 reads/writes if it's a good disk! :-P

I used to do that all the time, when I had one of those Super Magicom (i think that was the name) for the SNES. Copy the file, drill a hole and play;)
