Title: What is the best icon set?
Post by: Phantom on April 22, 2008, 10:54:46 PM
I wonder what is the best icon set to install on my A1200 with 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 030/50MHz with 32MB Fast RAM. MagicWB, NewIcons? Any ideas?

@Phantom,

Personally I would say that GlowIcons are the best if you want a nice colourfull workbench (i think they are much better than the "NewIcons" set).

If you arent really interested in a coloufull workbench but want something better than the bog standard Icons go for Magic Icons.

Truecolour PNG icons on an 8bit Workbench, with AfA-OS FTW! ;)

Cheers,

We're coming to no consenus here.  We have 4 different answers already.  Is it really this unclear what to use?  Maybe some people could leave some pro's and con's as to why they prefer certain icons.  I think that I would agree that on a standard out-of-the-box set-up that MagicWB looks great.  What would be the best looking icons if someone was using a Picasso IV?

@ Phantom

You might like to use some of Ken's Icons as I do in my main A4000 :-)

Hi. I'm looking for nice and fine icons too.

Can you please explain, when you say "GlowIcons" is this a some program name, or it is "GlowIcons" icons set pack, or you mean any icons pack, that described as "GlowIcons" on aminet?

Does this "GlowIcons" required some other program to be installed on WB3.1 to work?

Same question for "NewIcons". I know this program and installed it, but icons looks not very good, even on RTG. Does you mean that i need add some icons pack, or what?

Thanks guys for your answers.

To tell you the truth, I installed NewIcons but on non-laced screen they don't look so nice. So I switched to an interlace mode (like I had some years ago). Anyway I will try GlowIcons too, they seem to be better-looking.

Is there an installer for GlowIcons (like the NewIcons set) or just copy over? Is there necessary to install NewIcons first, for GlowIcons to show off?

Not with Workbench 3.0. :-)

I created all my own icons and have disks full of them... Wouldn`t be without them. That is what makes the Amiga so wonderful, the customisation of the Workbench. And size is has no real limit. Why use someone else's when you can make your own. I digitise stuff and import the images into the icons... Fantastic.

IMHO, if you're not using any graphics card, the main question to answer before you go for any non-standard icon set is what resolution you are going to use. Remember that on AGA, the more colors you have, the slower the graphics are.

Therefore I would go for MagicWB, in 8 colors the WB is still snappy.

Same goes for Workbench images ... I use light blue text on black... Garnet is a favourite font. And 8 colour home made icons. You can make it all look sexy. I also use ToolsDaemon from the menu to launch stuff... My icons on the Workbench are scripts icons for networked machines on the system and the vast array of hard drive VOLS I have.

I liked the Vulcan Icons cus you linked them together to make a picture.

Those Glow Icons.. just appear as a tiny white square on my Amiga

Saying all that I do have sexy Lara as an image on the 1200 tower. I edited the image to reduce colours.. Still looks good though. Image from the TopCow site...
