Title: SCSI cdrom to A590
Post by: Speelgoedmannetje on April 09, 2008, 05:57:08 PM
Hello all,
I just purchased an old external SCSI cdrom drive (for about 50 eurocents). It didn't came with a cord. Can I use a straight through 25-25 pin cord? Are there drivers available for Workbench 1.3?

Yes you can use 25 to 25 scsi cable. But don't forget adjust scsi ID for external scsi box :-)

Ehm, I don't understand, I was talking about a standard 25-25 pin male-male 'extension' cable, but I guess I need a special SCSI cable? Can I make one myself? I'm not allergic to soldering...
And the A590 harddrive is set to 1, with those four switches. Do I need to set it to 2, or?

25-way D-connector to 50-way SCSI cables have 50 wires in them, 25 of which are grounds, and all those grounds run to the same pin on the 25-way connector. The ground wires are there to prevent cross-talk, in much the same way that 80-conductor IDE cables (for use with 40-pin headers/devices) allow higher data speeds than the 40-way cables. If you can find a 25-way to 25-way SCSI lead, it should still have 50 conductors in it.

It is not recommended to use 25-way straight-through extender cables in place of a proper SCSI lead.

Both systems have 25 pin adapters...

From page 5 of the search that I posted, Item (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SCSI-Grade-DB25-Male-to-Male-1-0m_W0QQitemZ130212781782QQihZ003QQcategoryZ31494QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) which is claimed to be SCSI-grade, using twisted-pair cable.

A thanks, I think I'll have to buy one. I already found one in a nearby store on the internet. :-)

It seems better value to me than soldering my own such lead. Time is money and all that - not to mention the risk of getting something wrong or having to trace a poor or broken connection. :-)

Hmyes, but I'm a piss-poor student, with a bit of time and quite some skill with the soldering iron...

25 wires onto one connection, at both ends... Also, the thickness (more to the point, thinness) of the wires is important. I think it is worth €15 or so (less if you can find one second-hand) to be able to blame someone else if it doesn't work.

@ Speelgoedmannetje

BabelCDFS (http://babel.de/amiga.html) is 1.3 compatible.

But the pin config is just straight through, because I can easily get a high-quality cable (if I do not already have one. :-)

Get yourself a cheap 25-way male D to 50-way male Centronics SCSI lead (pretty standard, lots available, second-hand plentiful, etc) and one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/25-pin-D-Sub-to-50-pin-Centronics-SCSI-Adapter_W0QQitemZ260227206632QQcmdZViewItem)  and you will have the best of all possible worlds :-)

The only thing that I can find (I can't buy with ebay -yet) is this (http://intronics.hd.nl/p/INTRONICS/AK5742)
Just googled on the serial number.... found out that on another site it's regarded as a printer cable. (and it's a LOT cheaper there)
SOLVED.

The standard such cable is one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Standard-External-SCSI-Cable-25DM-50CM-NEW-inc-UK-p-p_W0QQitemZ120242147624QQihZ002QQcategoryZ31494QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) which with the little adapter such as this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/25-pin-D-Sub-to-50-pin-Centronics-SCSI-Adapter_W0QQitemZ260227206632QQcmdZViewItem) would give a very useful combination.

I've just been to a nearby electronics shop, and the point is with these cables that they need to be IEEE 1284 compliant, which not all parallel cables are. I ordered one by them.
