this is really stupid...was just playing around after succesfully installing my idefix express....
went to the presets...for the piktogramms for the drives....and made them all invisible....don't ask me why i don't know...
so now i'm left with only the workench thing on top and can'get into any of the drives or programms....
which command can i use in the workbench command box...to get into any of the drives???????
this is really dumb

CD changes to a directory of your choice
DIR lists the files in the directory

Use info for an overview of all available drives (including aliases).
Then, changing to a drive can be done by simply typing the name of the drive (for instance system: or work:) followed by enter. CD is not neccasary for jumping to a drive or alias.
-
tried it but
with info it lists my drives....the one i wanna get into is system:presets..there i wanna change the piktograms again to make my drives visible............but when i type in system:it doesn't go anywhere i still get a blank desktop.... :-?

System: is normally your boot drive, i.e. DH0: IDH0: Workbench: etc
Dave G 8-)
-
yeah that is my boot drive...System it's called ....do i type it in with a new command window opened?

A daft question/statement - have you got a command window open already?
And yes an Amiga normally needs a comand window open for you to type in instructions.
Dave G 8-)
-
yes i got the window open...this is the only thing i can open at the moment....then when i type info...it shows all the drives available....when i type in system: nothing happens...then i opened a new command window and typed system: then the command window dissapears ..but nothing on the scrren except the "toolbar" on top ..i'm lost.this is weird

The conventional shorthand for the boot device, whatever it may be, hard disk, floppy, whatever, is SYS:

So to get to presets you need to type in the following
Sys:Prefs/Presets
and that should get you in the right place
Dave G 8-)
-
ok.... sys: does the same as when i type system:(Which is the boot drive"...i think i need to get straight to the presets on the boot drive ...to change the piktograms to be seen again..
.

I guess you all ovesee the obvious here ;-)
Select execute command
Type in cli
A DOS shell like window will open.
there you should try sys:prefs/workbench (not sute about the exact path but you can look for yourself)
-
Don't use the "Execute a command" menu option (if that is what you are doing), open a Shell window and do it from there.
Use Execute a command and type "SYS:System/CLI" and then proceed.
-
Try this:
1) Boot from a workbench floppy disk. You should now be able to see all the drives on your desktop.
2) Navigate to the hard drive on which your system is installed. Go to prefs/env-archive/sys/ drawer
3) Rename workbench.prefs to old_workbench.prefs
4) Remove the floppy drive and reboot form the hard drive (perform a cold reboot by switching off, waiting 30 seconds, then switching back on).
Should be back to default.

Rich
PS Don't panic (Mr Mannering!). God, I hate Dad's army, but its influence is ubiquitous in British humour. :-P

I advise against calling your boot device "System", for obvious reasons...
a) There is normally a drawer inside SYS: that is already called System (you'll find Format in there, amongst a few other things)
b) If you try fiddling with the Resident command, you will find that there is a part of the internals called SYSTEM
This makes for possible confusion, at least for me if not for the machine. That is why I don't like naming a drive "System:" as I don't like the idea of having to type "System:System/command"
-
Hehehe... Indeed, you'll have to first open a Command Shell. This can be done from 'execute command..' by typing newshell or newcli.
Then, from within that Command Shell you can use the 'info' trick and typing the device you want to dive into.
-
Ok ..so a different window...will try where i can get...typed it in as it should be but nothing really opens up----guess in this shell thing its all text based or do folders really gonna open up???
Can't boot from a disk drive cause got a 3.5 cd which was installed on the A1200 when i got it...and only installed the idefix to get a cd rom working.can i connect the cd rom directly to the ide port to boot up?then i could set jumpers to the sys boot drive to slave and fix it?
-
The Shell window is indeed for text input/output. It is a Command Line Interface, hence CLI, so no icons in there.

Yes it's text based. Typing DIR should showup the directories within.

P.S. Have you tried uninstalling IDEFix Express and see if that gets you back on the right track :rtfm:
Dave G 8-)

i think all i can do is install a new system which is pretty hard cause the cdrom is not working and i only got the os 3.5 cd....mmmhh have to think what to do now..i can't get along in this shell window....btw the last post i typed into my 1200 instead of my notebook....confused
-
What disk is it asking for?
And unless 3.5 is waaay different from 3.0, there is no sys:presets ...
Try "SYS:Prefs/" followed by "Dir" and see what happens, you should see Env-Archive/ in there (this has been mentioned earlier)
If all that is too much typing, then just type "ENVARC:" and that should put you directly into the right place to start deleting/renaming your wrong preferences settings. (Of course, this presumes that you have booted successfully from your hard disk.)
-
i'm in there system:prefs/env-archive.....what can i type in now to maybe reset the preferences?and i'still on that bootig from that sys drive
-
but i only see------system:prefs/env.archive> after that nothing shoes up...
and i doesn' ask for a specific disk no more
-
You could try "Delete #? ALL" ... that will clear the whole lot
But I recommend going into "sys/" first and looking at things before you do anything too drastic.

You could try the following
rename sys to oldsys
then do a cold reboot and see how that goes.
It will destroy you preference settings though

sorry forgot dir ....now everything shows up....how can i delet reset it???i set the pictograms for the hard drives to something like invisible..thats when it all started...
-
Thanks davideo..how can i change them to old prefs ??

I don't think you can.
You'll have to do it the hard way - if your hard drives show up :-o
Open your boot drive and go into preference and reset each to your own choice :rtfm:
Dave G 8-)
-
rename sys to oldsys
Once your in the right directory
That easy, Dave G 8-)
-
