Title: Amithlon and Vmware under Windoze
Post by: mrpig on August 08, 2003, 10:17:37 AM
Hi,

I played around with Vmware before to allow me to run Linux in a windows under Windows XP. Has anyone tried to run amithlon or amigaxl this way?

I dont see any immediate reason why it wont work and would be quite cool as vmware was quite quick and would be better than winuae still?

regards

Darren

I don't think you should assume it will be faster than WinUAE, in fact I'd bet it would be slower.

It won't be faster.  But AFAIK Vmware isn't an emulator - it juust makes a virtualised CPU from your current CPU.  So I'd imagine it should work - as long as Amithlon supports your graphics card etc.

AFAIK all attempts to run Amithlon on vmware have failed, because while vmware uses your real CPU, it emulates much of the rest of the hardware. In this case, the problem seems to be the emulated graphics driver, which is not VESA 2.0 compatible.

(It may be that the latest version of vmware may have fixed this, but I haven't seen any reports of it being used successfully)

Not true, AROS x86 native requires VESA 2.0 minimum for 24bit gfx and runs fine in VMware. Many of use use VMware to develop for AROS.

Fair enough, I was merely repeating second-hand information.

However, it remains a fact that there is no confirmed instance of anyone running Amithlon successfully under vmware.  The problem does in fact seem to be some incompatibility between the graphics driver in the kernel and vmware, but I cannot elaborate further on the details. I'm sure a thread on the subject in the Amithlon mailing lists will bring more light on the matter.

Thanks for the replies. I guess my best bit is to give it a try and see what happens :) I will let you know if I had any success

I use the latest version of VMWare and AROS works fun but Amithlon crashes on the screen with the boingball - it doesn't even display the ball. I am yet to try it on VPC but that's not the question :)

The main problem with VMware would be that it emulate and VGA adapter. I bet the kernel dont support this atm. Post an request on the list, and an updated kernel might bring support for this.
