Just wanted to let u know that there's an initial version of OWB web browser for 68k Amiga, here:
http://strohmayer.org/files/OWB_m68k_1.1.lha
Although it's very limited at the moment, it's a GOOD NEWS nonetheless.
Please, if u're at all interested in it being further improved, show your appreciation by sending an email to the author (j_s AT gmx DOT de) !

I just tried this on my A3000 040/40 MHz and A1200 060/50 MHz setups. It looks really sweet and promising ! But it's not usable at the moment. I hope Jörg can eliminate SDL dependencies and switch to Amiga native libraries in time. It can be a really usable and perfect browser then !
For the interested, this port needs 15+bit screenmode, so if you don't have a gfx board & Cybergfx/Picasso96 installed, do not bother.
Keyboard input doesn't seem to work yet, so I just strolled around in google. Also there are no adress bars/ scroll bars and stuff. But it works, and it's great :)

Although this is great news I dont think that most people Amiga's could cope, seeing as on the A1 side they need about 128MB of ram to run it (and even then ive read people saying its slightly slow) and as far as I am aware only Blizzard Accel boards will allow you to have that much memory.
Dont get me wrong it is great for us 68K users and if my 1200 was active and connected to the web I would use it instead of AWeb.
-
@ countzero.
How much Ram are you running it under?
-
A3000 has 80mbs, A1200 has 128mbs. It uses about 10-15mbs on startup, and increases to 30-35 mbs. Though I just browsed google news and stuff, and it may get worse ...
At the moment it takes about 20-30 secs to fully render a page with some images (google news). Google entry page without any images takes about 5 secs or something.(hmm actually there's an image there, the google logo)
-
Great news!
Its a start and with a little improvements if will certainly make a very nice browser for new 68k systems.
-
This would be great for UAE/Amithlon users, and would probably be usable on a 060/graphics card system with 128mb of Ram

Hi,
This is my first post, so apologies in advance if I'm not following protocol!
I stumbled across this version of OWB last night and tried installing it on my A4000D. On first go I got an error message telling me I needed Ixemul.lib Version 48. I duly downloaded the 48.2 060 version (I have a cyberstorm MKII, 060 with 128MB ram) from aminet and installed it. I tried running OWB again, but still get an error message (a different one) and it doesn't go any further.
Any ideas, anyone?
I have an A4000D, Cyberstorm MKII - 060, 128MB Ram, CV643D(with scan doubler), X-Surf, OS3.9, 3.1 Roms, 85MB IDE HD, IDE DVD-RW, Scsi Iomega 100MB ZIP & Scsi Iomega 1GB Jaz.
-
I used this version (http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/ixemul-48.0). Note that there are actually two libraries to install. 'ixemul.library' and 'ixnet.library'.
-
@countzero,
Did there seem to be much difference in the speed of the 1200 compared to the 3000?
Just wondering if it could theoretically run on 64MB Ram and remain responsive?
-
@Tumbleweed
Welcome!
-
I didn't notice much difference. they were both slooooowwww ...
64 mb should be ok I guess. but responsiveness more relies on the processor I think.
-
OK Great news FOR APRIL THE FIRST!!! , have emailed the author!
Now to try it on my 256mb BPPC 060 60mhz A1200
-
Thanks countzero.
I tried that - error message I get is EMT Trap - OWB??
Any ideas what EMT is ? Looks like an error trap of some sort to me.
-
I got it working! It didnt like MuFastRom and MuFastZero,
taking them out of my user startup fixed it.
As for OWB its slow but the rendering engine appears to
be robust. However as there is no keyboard input I've
only tried it by clicking through the links on the google
home page.
Worth donating to the author via PayPal for more updates.
So far so good.
-
Other notes:
-It does not need a full Geek Gadgets environment as specified in the Readme (I have just ixemul and ixnet installed), though there are some SnoopDos hits to files in etc:. No noticeable effect on their absence.
-With 96MB of RAM free, I pointed OWB to Amiga.org and was left with about 70MB free
-Comparable to the first release of OWB for OS4 in terms of functionality.
-Acceptable speed on an 060/50, but far, far slower than IBrowse or AWeb.
Good first step. Hope to see it improved.
-
Good news!
When i first saw the thread, i thought that someone requested a 68k port. From what i read about the OS4 version, it is getting better and faster in every new update. As counterzero said, let's hope that the SDL dependencies will be removed eventually. This will make it much quicker and less memory hungry.
-
Matt_H, how did you point it to a.org ? does keyboard input work after you resolve hit in etc: ?
-
@ countzero
You can pass it any URL as a commandline argument. 1.Ram Disk:> owb http://www.amiga.org
There's also a --height and a --width parameter.
-
mmm..
i have contacted owb author and he told me that OWB was impossible to port on 68k, because his source was for os4 SDL only.
But, this news is very greatest!!!
-
i tryed and it works ...
website now are exactly as a modern browser.
is very limited and i can't digit characters into search engine..:(
-
Starts here -- but all I get is a white screen (no matter what I put for url).
I'd like to try this -- any ideas?
-
Figured it out -- OWB wants the older versions of the ixnet & ixemul libraries (v48) -- whereas, I had v49.17 installed.
-
Wow! It almost works! :-)
Mine has frozen up after loading amiga.org. Maybe my stack isn't big enough? I ran it from the shell.
The colours are wrong, but it looks nice.
Good start!
Edit: OK, I ran it again with more stack, and it's working. I specified "--depth 24" and the colours look good. It defaulted to "--depth 32" before. It follows links. It scrolls with the scrollwheel on my mouse! It's pretty slow, though. :-)
-
I'm really happy about this.
I very much hope that Jörg will enhance the 68k Version like he did for his OS4 builds.
With Navigation bars, scrollbars and some speed up this browser should become real nice.
Would it make sense to allow more people to help Jörg in some way?
I'm not sure if Jörg needs or wants more help.
But if the source gets put on a cvs server like source forge maybe this would make it easier for more people to contribute to this?
Cheers
Gunnar

google maps work very well, navigation, photo, zooming and satellite view :)
-
dammit! i have to wait till i get home to try it! sounds awesome!

Has anyone tried to run it under WinUAE ??
All it does for me is display a white window.
I have ixemul & ixnet libraries version 48.0 and plenty of RAM; also bsdsocket.library emulation is selected in winuae settings.

I have ixemul & ixnet libraries version 48.0 and plenty of RAM; also bsdsocket.library emulation is selected in winuae settings.
To make it work under winuae, I made a directory with the
amitcp demo files from aminet in it. I then assigned AMITCP: to that directory.
After doing this, OWB showed the google page on startup.
Edit: You have to do this, because OWB looks for some files
from the AMITCP package. There is no need to really install
AMITCP, and you still have to use bsdsocket emulation.
Just copy the installation files to the dummy directory.
-
i run it on Amithlon system and it works very well..
-
@MozzerFan:
I did as you explained and it now WORKS !!
-
to run OWB you have to download latest SDL 68k available.
-
It worked on my 1GHz PIII 512MB RAM Amithlon machine. Very promising in its initial stage. Hope for more development to make it as useful as the AOS4 version.
Finally, a CSS capable Browser for AOS3.x Amigas. Bravo!
-
I have tried to get OWB running but I need ixnet.library V48 and I don't have it, tried Aminet but no luck.
Has any one got this?
TIA,
Mike.
-
@ swift240
ixnet is part of the ixemul package. It's on Aminet.
-
Ahhh yes so it is, thanks.
Mike.

I didn't need to ?
-
SDL 68k is a link library, so it's included in the OWB binary, unless you intend to compile OWB yourself there's no need to download it. Seems some people are a bit confused here...
-
BTW,
is there any chance that 68k users get CSS functional web browser (OWB or Netsurf port, or even Ibrowse 3).
Why, you can say, AOS4.1 came out?.?..
Well, I am thinking on NatAmi project, and lots of users who will rather buy natamy at this time because of software compatibility issues, and slowly plan upgrade on NextGen machine... At time it will be better software supported...
