Title: Samsung SM225MD - no picture on SCART & Composite
Post by: girv73 on March 30, 2008, 06:46:40 PM
I've just bought a Samsung SM225MD 22" LCD monitor / DTV. It's working nicely as a PC / Amiga gfx card monitor connected over DVI and VGA, but I can't get a picture on the SCART or Composite inputs.

I'm trying to connect my Amiga's native output via RGB SCART, but all I get is a black screen. I suspect the cable I'm using doesn't have all the required connections, though it works fine when connected to a 14" CRT TV.

I've also tried the Amiga native composite out, but all I get is a blank white screen. The same thing happens when I try one of those Atari 2600 style joystick games, though that game works fine on my main TV.

The monitor is picking up some signal on those inputs as it isn't displaying its "no signal" blue screen. I'm no AV or TV expert and I thought SCART was SCART and Composite was Composite with nothing much to go wrong.

Any advice appreciated!

You are right, if composite and SCART works on your other TV then it SHOULD work on the Samsung.

Do other inputs (DVD players, VCRs, etc) work on the Samsungs SCART/Composite ports?

Is the Amiga running in 50 or 60Hz?  I believe the Samsung should work on both but its worth a check.  Try holding both mouse buttons down when powering on the Amiga, see if you can see the boot menu and if not press TAB and see if that makes any difference. (I think that's it, I am a bit Amiga rusty to be honest)

Obviously it wont work on Workbench when its setup for VGA but I assume you were already aware of that - as it wouldn't work on your other TV in that mode either.

I'm sorry I cannot be more help.  Hopefully someone else had experienced and fixed this problem.

Maybe you could try some standard video appliance such as a DVD-player with good standard cables.  If this doesn't work either, then the monitor is probably at fault.

The Amiga is in 50Hz mode, but I'll try switching to 60Hz to see if it makes a difference. TAB is the key on the ESM :)

I'll see about pulling the DVD player from the living room for a test session, or hooking up a laptop via S-Video might be handier.

FWIW, I have Workbench running fine @ 1680x1050, through a Mediator + Voodoo 3 hooked to the Samsung's VGA connector. It took quite a bit of fiddling with P96Mode to get the right parameters though.

I've got the Amiga native output working through the SCART socket now. It seems the Samsung didn't get on with the SCART cable I was using (the wiring seemed a little strange to me!). I got a new cable off eBay and it's working well.

Curiously, the composite input is also now working well !

What's your composite quality like? I have a 225MS (same monitor, just made for Australian market, so no SCART) and it is horrible
