Title: Workbench 2.1 pre-installed
Post by: rkauer on March 29, 2008, 07:08:33 AM
 Workbench 3.0/3.1/3.9 pre-installed are becoming common as mud, but where can I find a good 2.1 version for an unexpanded A600 (2Mb)?

 I recall I found it somewhere, but my "favorites" drawer is so crammed...:-?

Shouldn't it be 2.05 for an A600 (original) ?

2.05 shipped with the A600, but 2.1 offers a few improvements like built-in CrossDOS, locale and perhaps most importantly... LESS memory useage! (When did Microsoft ever release a newer operating system that used less memory??)

It is quite rare probably because 3.x was already shipping when it was released

rkauer, if you have 2 MB in your A600 then it's expanded.  ;-)

A nice preinstalled 2.1 is the ClassicWB GAAE version. (http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/gaae.htm) I used this as a basis when I installed my A600 and I'm quite happy with it.

Isn't 2.05 the Kickstart version, rather than the WB version?

I thought Kickstart versions were 2.04 (37.299 and below) and 2.05 (37.300 and up), and Workbench is either v2.0 or v2.1.

Have fun with the PCMCIA under 2.04.

Nope ... I have versions OS 2.04, OS 2.05, and OS 2.1.
Actually, I've never seen OS 2.00 and don't recall anyone
ever refering to it. Maybe they never actually released it.

2.00 = 2.0, which was originally intended to be 1.4 I believe. It was such a big change from 1.3 that they called it 2.0, and I think it was for the A3000.

 First of all, many thanks to Colani for the link!:bow:

 To all you people:

 That's a common mistake: since the A600 was delivered with a multitude of kickstart versions (and only two Workbench versions), people really get confused.:crazy:

 To recall it:

 KS
 37200~37299 - no support to hd, nor PCMCIA;

 37300 - problematic PCMCIA, HD up to 40Mb (but some people, myself included, use bigger hds with no problems);

 37350 - IDE up to 2Gb, no problem with PCMCIA.

 All ks versions up to 37299 are called ROM 2.04, 2.05 is 37300 and 350.

 Workbench

 WB 2.0 is for A3000 with ROM 1.4 only, or A600 without hd (the major difference is lacking the "say" program in 2.1).
