Hi all,
With a bit of luck I'll be placing an advert in Rapid Electronics' newsletter for anyone with any unused Amiga equipment in the UK to get in touch.
I’m still figuring out quite how to handle any offers (Either I'll list them here manually on A.org or I'll try and sort something else out), but, one thing is for sure, I'll probably need to know which Amigans live in, and where you might be located in the UK.
Regards,
Hodgkinson.

:bump:
-
If you track down any 2000 expansions I'd probably be quite interested.
You could throw up your finds on Amibay, that could be a way to avoid the stuff falling into the hands of traders.
-
That sounds like the best idea to me as well.
Hopefully less unscrupulous people than on Ebay as well.
-
I was thinking AmiBay too. The only snag is it isn't like the old one, where anyone could post - You've got to have an account set-up first - Which will deter most people from listing.
I might try signing up and listing any replies manually.
TiredOLife: Are you in the UK?
Hodgkinson.
-
Absolutely
http://www.amibay.org
They have a forum entry for "freebies" and "Swaps".
Unfortunately I think the kind of person who chucks out Amiga hardware isnt likely to be the kind of person who finds Amiga.org or Amibay.org
Freecycle is your best bet.
-
Why not list a few items here for those who aren't looking at amibay.
I mean, I'm not looking to purchase anything, but if you list something I might buy it on impulse.
-
Sounds like a cool idea!
Im on the lookout for an A2000 030 accelerator ..
-
I have an A600 (working) and 2x A500s (status unknown) if you are interested
I just can't be bothered joining Amibay, why not let it be more like Amibench? There was hardly any abuse and it was a lot easier
-
@ Hodgkinson
Yes mate.

Apologies Hodgkinson, but I have to respond to this:
The old AmiBench was dated & Mark Wilson wasn`t willing to surrender the name. Mark was & afaik, still is, looking at doing something different with the old AmiBench.
AmiBay is still an Alpha site atm. As the site develops it will evolve. It has evolved so far through users input & feedback on the Forum itself. Unless you sign up for an AmiBay account with a Valid Email Address (no web-cr4p-type mail boxes allowed) you won`t be able to post your ideas & feelings about the site. The more people that do, the quicker the evolvement! The Staff (Inc myself) are a friendly easy going bunch of Amigans & are there to help in any way possible. Just read the rules (easy peasey) & there shouldn`t be any abuse in any vernacular! :-)
Best Wishes,
Charlie

Any hardware (aslong as it isn't genlocks, external floppy drives and most other modules). Mind you if I was offerd any of that for free I wouldn't say no.
-
@ Hodgkinson
I also feel that I have to answer your comments. You must appreciate that Amibench was set up back in the glorious olden days when Ebay wasn't the place it is now.
Mark's site was fine, but latterly was also wide open to abuse from traders who could profiteer from cheap offers then make a killing on Ebay.
Amibay has been set out from the start to contain any trader abuse of the site. The Recycle Bin, (where freebies etc. are offered) is off limits to traders and the admins do carry out checks and police the site, which is more than could be said for either Ebay or Amibench.
It's your choice if you want to use the site or not, however, if you want a comparatively safe place to trade Amiga items then we feel that we are the place to be the preferred choice.
Signing up provides a measure of reassurance that members are bona fide and also allows trader checking to be carried out to prevent abuse, if you don't like that, don't sign up.
We've only been open since December last and we have over 220 members worldwide already, with no trades going belly-up so far, it's all been 100% positive.
Even accelerators have been going for reasonable prices on Amibay recently, check the posts to see what I mean.
What do you have to lose?

Its the requirement to have a none web based email that will stop me using your site. I now only use gmail addresses for my email as when i was using more tradition email i was receiving in excess of 2000 spam per day which required time, energy and spam filtering software on my my part to sort out. Since moving all my email to gmail i now get 1 maybe 2 spam per day and these are sorted into its spam folder for my review, more importantly i have only ever had one false positive with gmails spam filter and this was many years ago.
So its web based email all the way for me i'm afraid.

@ gazgod
That problem isn't impossible to solve, just contact an Admin at Amibay and I am sure we can sort it out for you, you wouldn't be the first member with a web based e-mail only.

OK and thanks for the comments ;-) I'll see what I can arrange with Rapid. I’m thinking of passing the advert pass you guys first before I post it for submission - Anyone interested?
PS. Somewhere here on A.org there is a huge C= logo. I’m looking for it (And the author...For permission) to use as a backdrop for the advert. I think it was used for a T-Shirt at some point. Can anyone remember where it is?
@WotTheFook:
I appreciate your comments - Agreed, AmiBay should be much safer than Amibench. I was just pointing out the facts why I feel that using AmiBay for role involving people outside the community might be difficult - I personally don't like having to sign up to a website just to use it once
PS. Recycle Bin? I still can't see any *obvious* links...Could you post me a URL?
EDIT: Come to think of it, reading the thread, here might be just as good a place as any. If anyone replies, I'll try to post a item and its location, then sort out anything else by pmail. That is, IF anyone replies to the advert...
Hodgkinson.
-
@ Hodgkinson
You can't see the Recycle Bin until you sign up and access has been granted by an Admin, it's the way we keep traders out.
Pretty cunning, eh? If traders can't see it, they also can't see what items are offered and abuse the Recycle Bin.
Items in the Recycle Bin sell for just the cost of postage, hence the name and you can see why we would want to keep traders away from nearly free stuff...
Edit: As a goodwill gesture you now have Recycle Bin access.

OK, I've signed in to AmiBay. Any chance of me being granted access to the Recycle bin? (I would say somthing relating to Merlin and Magic, but I won't bother  )
EDIT: Good lord, you really are Merlin - You must of read my mind  The A.org page hadn't even finished refreshing!
Regards,
Hodgkinson.

You were granted access two minutes ago ^^^
Welcome to Amibay!!!
I told you the site was well policed, we are also psychic...

I'm interested in bits and bobs for the Amigas.
Mainly 4000D at the moment but also got a 500 with 1.2Rom, 500 with 1.3Rom, 2 * 500+ one with GVP Harddrive, several plain 1200s, one towered 1200, the 2000HD I've just rebuilt and finally the CDTV I'm in the process of rebuilding
Like anybody else I guess though - I don't know what I want until I spot it
Merlin - Any chance of giving me access to the Recycle Bin?
Ta, Dave G 8-)
-
I am in Lowestoft - britans most easterly town. If someone in Norfolk/Suffolk wanted to get rid of Amiga equipment, I would certainly pick it up then distrubute to the community with nothing more than a small fee to cover postage (once I picked bits I need!)
-
@davideo
Access has been granted.

Thanks for all your replies.
I'd appreciate it if someone could have a quick look at the *proposed* advert. Its online here (http://www.booni.info/advert/advert.doc) in a word document (Of all things).
Let me know if you're willing and I'll drop you the username and password.
Best regards,
Hodgkinson.
EDIT: Doh, file now offline now it's been sent. Forgot to update post.
-
Put it up as plain text and I'd be willing to look at it. ;-)
(You could even PM it to me here at A.org...)
-
Any chance for Recycle Bin access pls....
Promise not to abuse
Thanks
:-)
-
Access granted
I know you won't abuse it, because I moderate the Recycle Bin and we only feed meega once a week, to keep him keen...

It`s a Big file! :-D
-
Can i have access to the recycle bin?
-
@ Gwion
What user name do you use on Amibay? Have you signed up there yet?
Edit: Found you, access granted.
-
Right.
...I've been trying to get a web email address to work on my new webpage. After a lot of waiting and twiddling of thumbs, commodore@booni.info can receive email, but I can't send to my normal AOL account (Errors returned, AOL account fine...) and neither does the autofowarder work. The cpanel itself is also hit and miss. :headwall:
Would it be any detriment if I just used my normal AOL email, rich1richard2304@AOL.com, or would this make people think stuff like "Who are these people?" and "wtf?". At least it seems to be rock solid. Just hope AOL's spam catchers don't chop people out...
 On the other hand, if anyone has a server or similar service capable of having webmail accounts set up, and forward the mail to my normal AOL address, could you help?
...No reply from neongod re the use of his C= backdrop...He last logged in over a month ago. If anyone has a C= that they wouldn't mind letting me use, I'll stick that in for the advert backdrop instead, otherwise im going to have to leave it out.
The advert needs to be submitted some time early next week at the latest.
With a bit of luck, it sounds like we could have an ad in both the spring and summer editions of the newsletter.
Regards,
Hodgkinson.
-
Can you create a "temporary" (disposable) email address with your provider? If you can, it should still enter the mails to your normal account, but through the masking address.
-
I'll see if I can have a crack at that...
-
OK, I’m probably dragging things out a bit, but most people probably wouldn't realise that quite a lot of PC hardware (Or certain common IC's) can in fact be used in our miggies.
I'm thinking of the less common stuff that will become hard to get hold of soon, or is already hard to acquire, as opposed to stuff like 3.5" IDE drives, even though SATA is coming into play.
(Starts a list, hopes others will add and prioritise...)
-SCSI Hardware ("Devices" implies drives; hardware implies the whole shebang...)
-72 Pin SIMM RAM
-Small IDE 2.5" Drives
-68000 series IC's (Applies to mac owners?)
I intend to add a short footnote (Maybe max 4 items) to the advert.
-
Update:
Computerepoch^an_ti*-*sp_am^@AOL.com now set up. Seems to be working OK.
I'll add those extra 4 items to the advert.
Should be posting to Rapid in the next 1/2 hour or so.
Last minute ideas welcome :-D
Hodgkinson.

-
Bah. Nothing yet. :-(
Well, in the meantime, have a look at the advert. (http://www.booni.info/downloads/Rapid.jpg) (540K)
The ad should still be printed for one or two months yet, so there's still a chance.
Hodgkinson.

@Hodgkingson: simply BRILLIANT
Bravo!!
I admire your effort!
Im about to to the same, just had the same idea couple of days ago in my country (Argentina), which means 100% LESS chances of getting that stuff due to obvious (and not so obvious) reasons
Meanwhile, im trying to get all spanish Amiga/Commodore & other 8/16 bit machines users/ex users, together in a very nice forum which a couple of friends created almost 2 years ago and in which im a proud member.
We have users from my country, but also from Chile, Uruguay, Spain, one user living in UK (argentinian), and even a user from Costa Rica!!
So, your iniciattive is excellent, i really hope you get good feedback!
wish me same luck to me and please allow me to use/translate your text into our own ad becasue i think is a brilliant piece of ad
Thanks in advance
Sebastian
PD: if some spanish language users are reading this and are interested in joining the forum, just PM and i will happily give you directions!!!

Ive always though of putting something in the freeads but im scared that ill end up with a whole heep of A500s ..
-
Gavilan: You have pmail ;-)
SamOS39: Ah, I bet there's some amigans not so far away that would gladly make use of them :-)
-
Hi Hodgkinson,
Like you, I tried an advert in our local paper, but unfortunately, I didn't get 1 call :(
Mind you, living in an Island of 80,000 people, I guess that there wasn't much chance
I wish you better luck than me!
-
Cheers
-
@Hodgkinson
It's a shocker just to see the old Commodore logo in a modern print magazine after all these years. :-)
Good luck with the hunt.
I was trying to think of the best way one woudl reach people in this area (Southeastern US) who might have such equipment. Hard to say... there are so many places one might look and another would not. Not like the old days when the local newspaper or latest computer mag were the only choices.
Hmmm, maybe a commercial on "American Idol" :-P

I've had a reply! Break out the beer!
Hi there,
I have dusted them off (!!) and it seems that I have 46x 1MB 30 pin SIMMs, 2x 4MB 72 pin SIMMs and 1x 8MB 72 pin SIMMs.
Hope they can be some use to you!
(Oxford, UK)
We'll, there you are. Anyone interested?

They have use in Amiga hardware. Some HD controllers and even some old accelerators (A500/2000 era) can take them.
-
@WotTheFook.
Wow, didn`t even know the site existed untill I read this thread!!!
I`ll cut straight to the point - Can I have Recycle Bin access please?
:-o
-
Anyone interested in the RAM?
I'll give it a few more days before getting back to him.

From a thread elsewhere...
@ Hodgkinson
Tension's access has been granted.
Anyone interested in the RAM?

Anyone at all?

PM sent.
I would like to install the 30 pin modules in a GVP2000HC+8, I do not know yet if they must be modified, I will look for the instructions on aminet.

Look at The Big Book of Amiga Hardware (http://bboah.amiga-resistance.info/cgi-bin/showhardware_en.cgi?HARDID=1196), but make sure the SIMM banks are 1Mb each.
-
A6000: You also have pmail ;-)
Rkauer: Yup, he says the 30pin SIMMS are 1Mb each.

Another folk's just emailed in :pint:
-72-pin SIMM's
-Old SCSI hardware
-Possible 68000 chips
Located in South Suffolk, near Woodbridge.
Anyone interested?
A6000: Everything OK with the 30-pin SIMMs?

Unfortunately 1Mbyte 30-pin SIMMs are pretty worthless even for the Amiga. 4-Mbyte is the sweet spot.
You might want to offer them to Atari STe owners?? 4x1Mbyte SIMMs are perfect for them.

Wow, I thought the Atari was dead as a skunk in a hole.
Is there a Atari community these days? I thought everyone packed it in a few years back??

Been lurking around this thread, i would like to get some sort of amiga system, an a1200 or some sort of big box amiga, but i am having real problems signing up to Amibay :( i just cant get past the captcha, with either firefox or ie7, i just get into and endless loop.

@A6000: Glad to hear that you now have the full 8x sticks. I'll ask about the HDD... (EDIT: Email sent)

Good luck with that... seeing as there are only 6 SIMM slots (http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/gvp2008,GVP2008) on that board :-)

Yes please, I bid for a couple on ebay a couple of weeks ago, but someone else had deeper pockets.
Alexh, my board is the GVP2000hc+8, not the impact 2000-ram8 you linked to.

Just to update the thread, he's replied and advised me that he *might* have some SCSI HDDs and he *might* have an A500 somewhere.
Will keep you posted ;-)

Stirling work going on here! :)
I'm only really after an A4000D which nobody in their right mind would give away in working condition.
Have looked at some on ebay but either they now have DD not HD disk drives in them or the owner hasn't got a clue and for 200-300 bucks I aint risking squat as I can play games fine on an A1200 with DD I need the HD floppy drive working for serious software!

Stirling work going on here! :)

I’m still here ;-)
Had another email recently:
SCSI C50 thru terminator - brand new
SCSI C50 terminal terminator - as new
C50 printer switch - 2 way - as new - 2 of these, different makes.
If anyone would like to pick them up......
I'm in central Cheshire, near the Jodrell Bank telescope.
Anyone interested?
(PS. I'd appreciate it if anyone interested would drop me an email to my AOL address - See profile - In addition to posting here, Uni life takes up a lot of time these days :-) )
