Currently running OS 3.5. What are the improvement in 3.9 vs. 3.5? I am trying to determine if it is worthwhile upgrading. Thanks
-
There are lots of differences which I would have to check up on to list. But the automatic datatype recognition that OS3.9 has is something which especially appealed to me.
i.e. if you were to insert a floppy with a GIF, JPEG and ILBM pic on it, OS3.9 automatically knows what type the image is and displays the correct icon fo it. A simple double click on the pics icon results in it being displayed for you using Multiview. But you can configure OS3.9 so that other viewers can be used. Before I had a GFX card I configured OS3.9 to use PPshow for ILBM, FJPEG_AGA for JPEG and Viewtek for GIF :-)
My vote would be for you to upgrade to OS3.9 :pint:

One of the things i really like in AOS 3.9 is WorkBench. It has been greatly improved since AOS 3.5 and i use it as my standard desktop. I'm not running ScalOS or Dopus.
@A4000_Mad
If you are talking about DefIcons, there is nothing OS3.9 specific about it. It's a 3rd party tool, freely available from Aminet
Edit: No. Sorry for the confusion. DefIcons is something different.
-
Most of the functionality of 3.5/3.9 was free third party stuff.
But, I agree, Workbench in 3.9 has some features that were a long time in waiting. It's hard to live without them once you get used to them.
-
Yes I use OS3.9 with both BB1 and BB2 I came from WB3.1 and it is well worth getting, I cant say about 3.5 as I never used it.
But OS3.9 is well worth getting you will see a big differance for sure.
And of course it will handle HD over the 4gig limit. I currently use a 40gig hd with OS3.9

Whatever happened to the fully patched 3.9 that people were working on?
-
Sorry guys but all posts say "get os3.9, its better" but other than getting multiview to show jpegs and gifs by clicking on them, no-one says why its better, and what features you can't live with that are in OS3.9.
Personally I think the ONLY thing you can't live without is large hard disc support, if you have a hard disk bigger than 4.3 gig.
I have 3.1,3.5 and 3.9. I HATE the reset on cold boot that happens with OS 3.5 and 3.9, i can get multiview to show jpegs band gifs in 3.1, and the 3.5/3.9 icon scheme is nice but only if you have a graphics card otherwise its too slow.
IMHO if you use the native displays and have hard disk less than 4.3 g then just install OS3.1 with MagicWB, MagicMenu, Toolmanger for a dock or two, toolsdaemon, clicktofront commodity, diropus4, some ak datatypes, viewtek, ppshow, hippoplayer, your choice of cdplayer, mpega and you have everything you need and 5 second boot-up on an 50mhz 030

In my opinion 3.5 and 3.9 were only greedy attempts to collect money from Amiga users. They dont add anything new except large HD support. It is slower, requires more ram and all tools are available at Aminet.
-
I think the best thing for 3.9 is fully working TCP/IP stack. With 3.5 you only got time limited demo version. There are some discussions about legality of the 3.9's stack, but that doesn't change the fact that you got it and it's the best stack for most :)
Oh and other stuff which you should have paid getting separately like CacheCDFS, Amplifier, XAD etc. Those things made it worth for me at the time, not particularly the OS itself (I was/am Magellan2 user anyway).
-
How much ram does 3.5 consume vs. 3.9?
-
I don't think there's any difference in practise.

And also Amigamance
NewIconsV4 with DefIcons does exactly that - lovely icons for loads of filetypes, configurable. Works great in OS 3.0/3.1 (KS 3.0 here).

I have just always figured that it was in everyone's best interest to keep everyone on the same page as much as possible. It makes developing new software so much easier. With the shrinking amount of Amiga users it's very important that programmers know what OS is going to be used. Were 3.5 and 3.9 earthshattering upgrades? Maybe not in some peoples eyes. Are they improvements over earlier OS's. Yes. Can you upgrade an earlier OS with PD stuff from Aminet to be able to do some of the things that 3.5 and 3.9 offer? Yes in some cases you can but at what price?

I already had Miami deluxe and a cd filesystem (funny that you needed to already have a cdrom installed to install OS3.5 or OS3.9, but that you got cachecdfs on the cd). Looking back I bought both OS3.5 and Os3.9 because I wanted to support Amiga hoping for a revival. And at the time i was more of a sucker for OS upgrades that meant a nicer-looking icon scheme. Not anymore, function wins over aesthetics.
I recently installed OS3.1 with the MagicWb icon scheme, Dopus4 toolmanager on my A4000 68060 with CV64 on a scsi card and on a A1200 with 40 mhz 68040: Its quick to boot, quick to draw icons, easy on the eye, easy to launch programs with, its what amiga was always about. I look at Amikit,- yeah it looks nice, lots of new features, i appreciate the work thats gone into it, but you know i found it hard to find my way around it (and i know amiga), what with start buttons and menus, task bars, weird menu items its a great OS if you want a Windows-Amiga hybrid. It just didn't feel like the amiga experience i know. But maybe I'm just a ludite...

You can get rid of the reset on cold boot by having the rom updates embedded on your rom.

On a desktop A1200?

What is so horrible in a single soft reset? (Which only happens the first time you switch on the Amiga, btw) The 5 seconds delay?...

What about OS 4.0 vs 3.9, aside from the benefits of utilising the RISC PPC? Is there that much more from 3.9 to 4.0? Im building an A1200 and was considering 060 vs PPC options.

Hi,
I upgraded to OS 3.9 in order to support Amiga Inc. at the
startup of their new company, so that they would continue
support of the Amiga computer. At that time they were an
upstart company that needed all the help that they could get.
So just to let you know by buying OS 3.9 you are showing
continued support of the Amiga to Amiga Inc.
OS 3.9 had nice icons, an avi player, shows various
picture formats, supports large harddisk support, supports
ppc cards, just to mention a few things.
