Title: Genesis with GVC 56K modem
Post by: robo-ant on March 15, 2008, 04:16:42 AM
Yes, this is lame, I admit.  I normally don't have problems like this.

The IT guy at work gave me his old GVC 56k Speakerphone modem, model SF-1156V/R21.  I found a copy of the manual for the modem on the Internet.

I don't intend to use the speakerphone or fax features.  I just want something faster than the old USR 56k X2 modem that isn't compatible with anyone anymore (it only connects at 33.6k).

I've tried to configure Genesis, both using the Wizard and not, but I can't get it to work.  When using the Wizard, I configure it as modem type "other" and specify AT&F\r as the init string (the factory defaults look like they should work).

The Wizard said that it had connected and configured the network, but it doesn't actually work when I try to go online.

It seems to get stuck at the moment it gets the CONNECT string.  The little connection window doesn't go away, and the status window shows the following error:

sana2_online: could not put DEVS:Networks/appp.device, unit 0 online

Does anyone know what could cause this error message?

Does anyone use a similar modem?  Is there something special I should use in the init string?

The modem definitely connects and continues talking to the server for a while.  I tried adding "M2" to the config string and I can hear that it's talking, and sometimes when I abort and try to connect again, the connection window fills with data from the previous attempt.  I see the name and information about my ISP in plain text and then some binary garbage.  It really seems as if Genesis doesn't know to start reading serial data at CONNECT time and so the data is still in the buffer.

Maybe it's just not authenticating, but I've retyped my logon name and password several times and I don't think I could have made that mistake.

Thanks for any help!

It was trivial to get this modem working with Linux, so I know it's not some brain-damage "WinModem".  Usually Linux is the OS that gives me headaches, not AmigaOS.  Why can't I get Genesis to play nicely with this modem?
