Title: Depressed
Post by: Karlos on March 06, 2008, 09:36:46 PM
Life seems to have contracted into an endless cycle of things I can do without. Long hours, no free time and the accumulated stress from a list of problems/worries that I can't even be bothered to enumerate, not even in a place as familiar as this.

I seem to have two emotional states these days:

1) feeling flat/unfazed
2) feeling miserable/frustrated

For the most part I do a great job of concealing, either that or nobody has really noticed. Don't get me wrong, I have good days but they seem to be the minority now.

Anyway, that's that off my chest.

Somehow I don't feel any better though :/

I thought we were missing your joyful bursts of humor lately!!

Not much i can say to help, after all..life mostly sucks, sort of.

I just remind myself that I'm one of the luckiest people to have ever lived. I can do things that 99% of humans have never done. SO, I can't complain much.

Believe it or not remembering that Does help me.

plus, what is funnier than dancing veggies?   (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o130/capedawg/smilies/dancingfruits0nm.gif)

hey Karlos... a few of us have noticed your lack of Amiga commitment recently :-)

<-- Look, it's me with my friend Oliver Kampshoff (in the background) in Hampstead, north London :-)

I assure you, that you are not alone... my January and much of February was spent lying on my living room floor wandering why... Anyway, I've thrown myself into learning German and it seems to have helped a little... though it didn't stop me spilling my heart to the wrong person... :-(

This time of year is always the worst (usually December to March)... But I have the advantage of a nice bottle of red wein and some German sausage to cheer me up and get on with life...

Remember, there are quite a few of us here are good to talk with :-)

I too have noticed your absence Karlos, I hope for you it's just a dark season downer. The sunny season is starting again and the bulbs have started to flower. It'll be summer before you know it =).

@Karlos,
I damn well know what you're talking about. I've had a very, very tough week, and don't know how to handle it. Maybe it's time to write things down. To make things 'solid', so you don't have to remember it (and thus, continuously rethink about it). It's me moms advice, so it must be good :-)

First off, it's really good to see you back Karlos. You have been missed. I won't presume to understand what you're going through at the moment. But as bloodline has said you have lots of friends here, and who knows: going in to specifics about your problems might help you to feel better (not suggesting you need to do it publicly :-) ) God knows I've done it enough times here over the past couple of years.

Take care, and please do one thing for me: try to deal with this before it becomes too hard to face. When you get to that stage, you're officially stuck in a rut.

Not half as much as my amiga(s) have ;) I've pretty much lost all enthusiasm for doing anything creative in the time I do get to myself, principally because I'm far to knackered by then to do anything but vegetate or sleep.

I can definitely relate to that. For me the change from a job I hated to a course I love, along with a little inspiration and a lot of creative advice (ta Matt ;-)) was just the change I needed to get some creativity back. Maybe you need to make a list of all the things which are getting you down or stressing you out, prioritise them and then deal with them one at a time.

oh great...

Karlos is having a rough time, Odin's been reduced to eating some kind of gigantic, hideous mold-growth, and Cecilia is suddenly thinking Kumbaya is something that we can enjoy....

srsly, my world is being twisted inside out as we speak.

The only thing I can suggest is that in my experience when I'm having a rough time of it, I usually need a perspective change (not that attaining one can be particularly easy much of the time)...but then again I like cruel and bizarre social engineering games...

for example, I have a friend who asked her mother what she wanted to do for her 70th birthday...and of all the things her mother could have picked, she went with "I wanna' go to Disneyworld".

My friend, in her late twenties was rather nonplussed about this idea to say the least.

I gave her the following advice...

"You need to make a game out of your situation...sometimes that game is called How many children can I make cry while waiting in line for rides that nobody wants to be on?  or can I pretend to be retarded and not have to wait for anything or the like...but in this case I have a particular suggestion of a game for you...

it's called "I'm going to f*ck Tigger!"

Make that your goal for the entire week...send me photos and we'll have a good laugh about it.

Anyway, that's about all I got...

How about quitting a project 'out of the blue', and with that, dropping the project-group as a stone, because you're the only one in the group who has in-depth technical knowledge?
That's what I did this week. How's that about a cruel and bizarre social engineering game?
The backgrounds of the other students of the project group were completely irrelevant to the subject. I didn't have any influence on how the project group was formed in the first place. Ah well, maybe I myself was being subjected to a rather cruel social engineering game...
Anyway, continuously explaining why this or that can or can't be done, the impossibility to answer in a nuanced way (because they won't understand it) and the impossibility of getting the necessary nuanced information from them, took it's toll last weekend.

I can be an asshole, yes. But only when people demand impossible things from me.

But I don't like it being an asshole. Far from it.

/me gives Karlos some booze to drown the sorrows with.

I know the feeling, Dude. Unfortunately I can't think of any way of feeling better, besides copious ammounts of alcohol (which in my case helped, but probably isn't a very good idea), and online computer games.

Not sure karlos would know what to do with alcohol!

-Edit- Clean some electrial equipment perhaps... though I doubt a nice spicy Shiraz is good for that...

I think that with Karlos being a muslim and all that, his faith forbids the use of alcohol. Or at least does not encourage its use, given that he's an UK resident and all that :).

But depressions are not funny, and the means to alleviate them differ from person to person. Some respond very well to medicine; others can manage on their own with an engrossing hobby. Nevertheless, I don't think hiding your current mental state is such a good idea, mate. Perhaps you point out to your superiors that you are really stretching yourself dangerously close to breaking point, and tentatively visit a MD before you truly collapse. You won't do anyone a favour doing that, least of all yourself!

I felt like sh1t today. Really, really bad. So I went to Smiths and got lots of pieces of card of all different colours and made a home-made birthday card for my other half. I feel a lot better now :-)

Karlos, maybe you should try something creative (but not stressfully creative like coding. Something which lets you switch off).

Cat owners will effortlessly recognise every gesture made by the cat in question  :-P . And if that didn't put a smile to your lips, make sure to watch

Sorry having to resuscitate an old thread, but I guess it's better than starting a new one...

As it happens lately I've also been depressed as hell... I think that now I've reached the bottom. I don't know if sharing this with "strangers" (albeit a very nice bunch of "strangers") is going to help, but there you are.

I guess this never ending winter isn't helping either... :-( I am reaching the point where I am becoming completely uninterested in anything and nothing matters anymore...

What do you people do for fun?
Title: Re: Depressed
Post by: motorollin on March 28, 2008, 07:40:52 PM
@alenppc
The winter weather certainly doesn't help my mood, though I find exercise combats that. You need to try to work out why you're feeling depressed. There has to be a reason buried there somewhere - people don't get depressed for no reason. If nothing immediately comes to mind, then perhaps talking it through with somebody would help you. The hardest part is when you start feeling like nothing matters. It destroys your motivation to help yourself. That's why you have to get yourself out of the rut before you're so far in you can't see the top.

You're absolutely right. There is a reason... I'm sick of being single and I don't have many friends. Before I didn't mind so much, I was involved with the Amiga community, I had my videogames etc to distract me. For some reason, none of this matters anymore. For the past year I have been trying to change this situation, and so far I have been completely unsuccessful, which makes me feel like I've lost ever hope to ever achieve anything...
