Post by: Mauro73 on March 06, 2008, 02:49:04 PM
Hi guys,

here's a little question:

do I need kickstart 3.1 to install Os 3.9 on my A1200?

Thank you in advance

Mauro

Have you replaced roms before? I hadn't, and found it a bit trickier than I expected. Especially getting the old 3.0 roms out, and doing that without bending their legs all over the place. You probably know all about this (and anti-static procedures) but best to be prepared. Anyway, I managed it, and if I can, pretty much anybody can.  :-)

Well, as a really old Amiga user (had 4 Amigas long time ago) I've replaced roms at least two times.
Yes it is not what you can call "easy", but you know it can be done.

I remember that I used a flat little screwdriver to slowly lift one side of the rom, then lifted the other side and finally the whole chip came out.

I'll take care of the anti-static procedures (no gum shoes, touch piece of iron to get rid of static electricity..)

Ok, let's hope to do a good job when the time will come  :-)

Hardware ROMS or not, you can still Kick the ROM into Fast Ram. Drawback is you loose 0.5Mb of Fast Ram but the bonus is your WB is an awful lot faster for doing so!  ;-)
Most kick programs I know need the use of an MMU from inside your CPU. If you have an LC version of CPU, you might not have a working MMU & consequently, you will not be able to Kick the ROM Image into Fast Ram.

Can anyone clarify if there are Soft Kicking programs that work without an MMU?

Yes, long time ago, I managed to softkick WB3.1 on an A600. I used the SKick (http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/skick346) with the following parameters:

C:Skick devs:Kickstarts/Kick40068.A1200 NOPATCH DEBUG QUIET

Mauro73

do not forget that torun OS 3.9

the basic system requirements are:

CD-ROM drive
Hard drive
68020 or higher processor
Amiga 3.1 ROMs (version 40.xx)
6 MB Fast RAM

if you don't have any accelerator with at least 6MB of Fast Run OS 3.9 will not work!!!

Hi Daniele,

the actual configuration of my A1200 is the following:

Hard drive
MC 68030
8 MB Fast RAM
external disk drive

the CD-ROM should come in few days because I've bought it together with the IDE-FIX interface, and anyway I've juast bought a 4xEIDE buffered from ebay (this also should come in few days).

The kickstart 3.1: I've ordered an upgrade kit two days ago form vesalia and should come the next week.

But the final configuration, after all the items will be arrived, will be as follows:

Hard Drive
CD-ROM DRIVE (I think I will replace it with a DVD burner)
IDE-FIX or 4xEIDE? (don't know who of the two is better)
Apollo 1260 - 68060 50 MHz
32 MB FAST RAM
Kickstart 3.1

Thank you for the advice Daniele
