Title: to save games from Amiga Forever
Post by: Muniuniun on March 03, 2008, 11:02:39 AM
Im playing "Ports of Call" from the Amiga Forever 2006 Plus Edition.

How can I save my game? When I try, I just get that the disk is write protected. There are some saved games which is not mine included, but I can't save my own. I guess this is because it tries to save to the CD... which of course is impossible.

Anyone?

Copy the ADF to your hard disk. Right click the copy on the hard disk and choose properties, and then un-tick the read-only box. Configure Amiga Forever to use that ADF for the game.

Why not use the savestate feature of WinUAE?

Why don't you mount an empty "ADF" in DF1: ??
WinUAE allow you to build Blank ADF for these kind of operations  :rtfm:

I'm afraid I don't know what ADF is...
Additionally I got no floppy drive if any of your solutions include the use of such.

However I copied the content of the CD to a folder on my harddrive and ran the game from there.

Now I don't get "disk is writeprotected" anymore. But instead "The PoC disk is full". but it saves the game anyways, but with a twist... the game will enter the list of saved game files. But when you reload the game and click "Start Action" it immediately proceeds to "game over" end recoups your financial status with an outrageous low fiscal balance that has nothing to do with your actual progress.

I think it very strange how doing this little stunt will save any game with a debt of a million gazillion dollars.

So... so much for running it from another folder...

What's this ADF thing?

(sniffle) I really liked that little company - stupid game crash.

Just use the savestate function of winuae, then you don't have to mess about with floppy disks at all!

hmm... "Just"... you say

While in the game - is there anything else I can open besides the F12-key "WinUAE Properties"? I can see where I can save savestates at, but the actual command-button or whatever "savestate" I can't seem to find.

I'm so close I can feel it... And it drives me insane.

The save button is greyed out before you start emulation.

Once you've loaded up winuae you just press F12 then move to the misc. tab.

The save state button should be useable.  If it isn't take a screenshot and upload it somewhere and we'll try and help from there :)

Hi Muniuniun

I didn't see anyone tackle this fundamental question.  ADF stands for Amiga Disk Format.  It's a file that looks like an Amiga disk to the Amiga emulator.  Your games are saved in ADF format for the emulator (and you can covert them back to disks for a real Amiga using software on aminet).

The neat thing is you can load a blank ADF format disk in the emulator, format it, and then use it to store data for later use.

Hope this helped!

Hello everyone, thanks for all your help. I finally understood the "savestate" maneuver.

The next thing is this... I have a DVD packed with Amiga games... ADFs I guess. There's no launcher build in the DVD, so how do I get a list of all the games, whatwith should I run the game? and how do I get it to find the DVD-drive where it's all at?

Right now Windows only recognize there is somthing in there, but that the bytesize is 0!... You see I kinda suspect the possiblity that the DVD may be corrupt. So I lack an indication of whether it actually works and I just dont know how to acces all these assorted goodies or whether I'm trying to work with a faulty disk.

Once again Thanks a lot for your input. I don't even have a joystick but am limited to mouse controlled games and still its a rare treat to rediscover all the games of my childhood.

If anyone knows where I can find Hired Guns for instance I would appreciate a hint. I played my self silly with that one back then. I even remember playing it on a friend's friend's 1200 while he wasn't around - and I accidentally hit the "forbidden button" that would save the game in the RAM... which had the nasty effect that it erased the entire library... oopr. And he knew karate And I knew nothing... nor of Amigas... So I became quite sweaty... But a kind soul saved my butt before the karate kid returned and he was none the wiser. My savior got a substantial reward of large amounts of Coke and crisps...

That was a little story for you right there guys. :-) I hope you still remember I had some questions in the beginning of this growing post.

@Muniuniun,

Can't the Pirate that gave or sold you the DVD full of Amiga games help you?

oh... I didn't think of that. I guess I just assumed all those games where so old that they perhaps had become freeware.

Well... I'll scrap the disk then. Actually I only played a select few games back then - I didn't own my own Amiga - so I really don't need an entire DVD full of all kinds of obscure games.

What I really would like to see though is, as I said earlier, Hired Guns, If anyone can direct me to a resource, where I LEGALLY, can acquire a functional copy I would appreciate it. Well, I guess this belongs in another forum now.

But thanks again... And I'm sorry if I offended anyone by inadverdetly venturing into the piracy end of the gamer scale. I will try to steer clear in the future.

Hi,

Hired Guns was a Psygnosis / DMA Design title... Psygnosis was bought out by Sony. We all know what Sony's take is on all things copyright and DRM-related, so finding a legal copy of this is not going to be possible unless you buy a second-hand original version from the likes of eBay...
