Title: Fitting a TEAC CD 224E in an Amiga 1200 case
Post by: Gavilan on February 28, 2008, 06:30:35 PM
Hi guys: i have seen some projects of people adding a TEac slimline drive to their original A1200 housing

I was wondering if this model: Teac CD 224E would be good for this, and what kind of cables/hacks/modifications should i do to my machine in order to fit the slimline drive in the A1200 case

Kind Regards

Sebastian

 The bits & pieces:

 - A laptop CD (I prefer a Teac CD 224W, who is a CD reader/writer);

 - An IDE to laptop CD adapter, easily found on Epay;

 - IDE split cable or an IDE splitter like IDEfix99 or better;

 - A Dremel tool or scalpels;

 - Sand paper;

 - Two bottles of Absolut Vodka!

 - Lots of patience.

 That's the way I done it, back in time...:cheers:

I mounted mine (a Teac 24x) in the middle of the machine, between the keyboard ribbon cable and the floppy disk drive.  Much nicer place for it imho and you can still keep the original harddisk cage for added keyboard support.  It's a tight fit but mine works flawlessly.  You are going to need a 4-way IDE splitter that works with IDEFix, an IDE to mini-IDE adapter (to fit the tiny connector on the back of the cd drive), some 40 pin IDE cable and a Y power adapter with three of the small floppy disk type power connectors to draw power from the m/b floppy power pins to supply power to your new CDROM drive and the original floppy disk drive.

 @Argus: you forgot the two bottles of Absolut!

Those of you, who have installed the slimline CD inside A1200, have you had to remove the mobo RF shielding?

 Of course! With the tinfoil installed there is no room to fit the CD inside.

As long as you don't remove the lower shielding, you should still be able to have children  :lol:
