hi just brought one these little beasts of ebay for great price.
was thinking of fitting it to my blizzard ppc card to replace the 040 cpu.
but also maybe getting 040 broad like appllo cards.
l know this cpu isint the same that is fittied to the phase5 blizzard cards it lacks the fpu and mmu, which probley mkae diffrence in speed more so the fpu.
is this possiable many thanks
in away l dont really want mess with my blizzard ppc card
to much risk and with os 4.0 whouldint be much point.

The 68060 is not a "drop-in" replacement for the 68040. The biggest problem is that the voltage requirements are different ie the 68060 uses smaller voltages 3.3v than the 68040. YOU MIGHT FRY THE 68060 ON THE BOARD OR THE PPC. Also there are a lot of pins that need to be desoldered and then resoldered. Finally the timing crystals are different. I don't think that Phase5 ever sold 66mhz 68060 boards as there were issues with scsi interface. Personally I wouldn't mess with the ppc board, unless you have the experience.
-
maybe this 68040>68060 converter (http://www.emulation.com/catalog/off-the-shelf_solutions/production-test_adapters/upgrade_motorola/) can help.
but it costs a fortune... :-(

68LC060 lacks FPU, but has MMU. 68EC060 lacks both FPU and MMU.

If you get an Apollo 1240 card, PG on this forum will convert it to an 060 board for you.
What constitutes a "great price"?
-
yes you can, but for the blizzard PPC you have to:
change the voltage regulator from 5volts to 3.3volts,
change the card mode from 68040 to 68060,
while you're waving a soldering iron at it,
either switch the clock crystal to a 60/66Mhz part,
or change the jumpers to feed the PPC clock to the 68k socket.
and hey, maybe change the multipliers on the PPC bus to the next notch up (3x to 4x). to give you an extra frame per second in truereality, or 3-4fps in quake2 or heretic2 or something.
i have a BPPC/040, i have an 060 chip, i know all the solder points to mess with, i just don't have the canolies to hold a really really hot piece of metal against a 12yr old multilayer PCB... :-)
amiga centre france arn't answering my emails to ask them if they'd do it for me...
-
throw PG (a.org user) a lump of money and he will upgrade your BPPC to the latest available 060. He did mine and his work is excellent!
-
wow thanks! :-D thats great! i'll PM now... :-)
-
PG rules, and his work is outstanding.

I wouldn`t put in an LC060 in any Amiga accelerator.
Not only that the lack of FPU can make a huge difference in certain applications / games but you also could run into compatibility problems. When software detects an 060 or you install an 040 / 060 version of a programm it most certainly assumes the presence of an FPU, as there was only one 060 accelerator that used stripped down 060 and that was the Apollo 1260 75 MHz. Even striped down 040 cards were rare in the amiga sector.
The bottomline I wouldn`t use even if it got it for free.
Heck a full 68060 isn`t that expensive anymore. Here on Ebay germany once in a while they pop up for 40 EUR buy it now.

Hi, I'm missing something... I also have a Apollo 040 and I'm really interested to update to 060 :).
1) what is PG?
2) What "series" of 060 can I use? (there is a lot of different versions...which I can buy)
3) I really need to upgrade a "firmware" on Apollo?
4) WHO can do this :).

Only MC68060RC or XC68060, who are the same CPU, with minor modifications inside.
3) I really need to upgrade a "firmware" on Apollo?
Yes!

PG!

Thank you for answers :).
1) More questions about processor, can I use e.g. MC68EC060RC?
2) What about this firmware? How to upgrade/update?
Thank you
