Title: MUI trouble (The Bar, Nlist, TextEditor)
Post by: darkcoder on February 22, 2008, 09:27:12 AM
Hi

 I keep updated many MUI MCC classes on my 3 main Amiga. During the last 6 months I had occasionaly noticed some instability on one of them, which is an A1200+030/50. Yesterday I discovered a possible cause, i.e. a reproducible bug: I start the MUI prefs program and whenever I access (by clicking on the list) to the preferences of "The Bar" or "TextEditor" or "NListtree" I get a guru $800000B.
Using a backup, I restored the versions of these classes I had on July, and they have no problem.
On the other hand, the newest versions of the classes give no problem on my other 2 main system (4000/040 and 4000T/060). I even tried to copy the whole MUI: directory from the A4000 to the A1200: the crash is still there (this says that the problem is not caused by some corrupted files in MUI:).

Software wise the 3 system are similar: OS 3.9 BB2 with no strange pathches.
What could be wrong on the A1200 ??

here's a suggestion, check the version of mui mccs in your libs:mui against those in your local MUI installation directory. Version differences there may cause trouble sometimes.

it's always worse!!
Today I installed YAM 2.5. As soon as it starts, a GURU $8000000B appears.
This happens even if I replaced The Bar, Nlist and TextEditor with old versions which don't produce the guru. So the Yam GURU does not come from a GURU in these MCC.

It seems there is a generic problem with MUI applications. Any idea??

That's why I always tell myself: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  :-D

It means one of those classes is buggy.

Nothing. While classes maybe work on other systems it does not mean they are bug free. Since your Amiga 1200 has 030 but your Amiga 4000 has 040 and 060 it could be possible those classes are using 040/060 only instructions.

You could try with a different SIMM memory installed. Maybe it's the memory that causes the problems.

@BAmiga2002

 already tried this, same problem with different simms! 10x for the suggestion!

@itix

I was also thinking of some problem with 030 but... is it possible that nobody has noticed it yet? Yam 2.5 is out from almost 2 month, and betas were there since years...

is 030/50 not used anymore??

I have had same problems with YAM 2.5 and the three MUI classes that you mention on my A2000. After re-installing MUI and deleting old preferences the problem was gone.

I dont think any of developers are using 030 anymore. Everyone is either on PPC or UAE. And it is not necessarily related to YAM but to one of those 3rd party MUI classes which triggers bug only in certain setups.

 If you have snoopDOS, lawbreaker or Scout, start one of those debug tools and make them save a logfile in a partition.

 Then fire YAM, wait for the GURU. In the next boot, open the debug file to see what fires the guru, this way you can find what cause the problem.

I tried to SnoopDos the system, but didn't get a clue.
SnoopDos produces the same log as in the 4000s. All the libraries that the MUI prefs program tries to load are there, except powerpc.library, cybergraphics (I don't have neither PPC nor gfx card) openurl and screennotify.library. The same libraries are also missing from the 4000s, but no problem there.

Then I re-installed MUI and ONLY MCC The Bar.
Version 21.4 is ok. Version 21.5 does again the System Error $8000000B. Now I really suspect there is something wrong with    the latest versions of YAM and the 3 MCC. Is there anyone using YAM 2.5 on a 68030 with a similar config as me (OS 3.9, no gfx card, 32M fast)??

@darkcoder:

Did you ever resolve this issue as I have the same problem with an a1200 68030@50.

Yam and SimpleMail both produce a 8000 000B GURU.

 I can't give you any real input about this problem, as i'm not using an 68030 currently, but,

 Imho, someone must convince the developer of YAM to stop forcing users to upgrade their MUI classes to the latest available versions. Some may be buggy as itix pointed out, while others are bloated with myriads of useless, added features. I think that the recent versions of TextEditor.mcc is a good example of this.
