Title: How Scandoubler works with an A4000
Post by: Phantom on February 21, 2008, 02:26:04 PM
I want to know how a scandoubler works with an A4000. I have a CyberVision64/3D GFX card with an Arxon Scandoubler fitted in the video slot. Amiga recognises the scandoubler at once, or I need some software for it? I can see there is also a VGA output so to work this I need something like a Switcher right? Any help will appreciated. Thanks.

as said before, the scandoubler is a device that does not interact with the amiga. The amiga has no way to know that it has one. it just takes the 15khz signal and makes it vga 31khz. nothing less - nothing more.
since you have the cv64/3d card, you need a switch with 2 inputs (1 for arxon and 1 for cv) and an output for your monitor.

I have an Arxon Scandoubler, lovely devices.

Quite simply, plug in a monitor and off it goes, I use a Diamondview 31khz. No driver needed.  The Arxon Scandoubler uses the 4000's Graphics slot.

But not all PC monitors support 31khz.

playing games on the PC monitor is a nice touch. (Even though they only run 15khz).

So, the only way to test if the scandoubler working, is to insert a game disk (OCS/ECS/AGA) into the A4000 and switch to scandoubler to see if it shows something right?

yes, or try a whdload game, or just enter the amiga early-startup-menu , or boot with a 3.1 wb disk...
or simply, go to Screenmode prefs, and select a PAL screenmode...

Well, with the Arxon, given its usage of the Graphics slot, as long as the 4000 is powered, then its Always on, and yes that means you will get a scan doubled Kickstart screen (and boot menu if you use the mouse button trick to activate it).

@ Phantom

The perfect solution for you would be to get the Phase 5 scandoubler that fits together with the CV64/3D. Unfortunately they are as rare as rocking horse poo :-( I've just hit the same problem yours as I don't have another Phase 5 scandoubler to go with the CV64/3D in this A4000.

As you can see, I've fitted an internal Scan Magic which has given me two 15 pin outs. Looking at AmigaKit's website, I'm wondering if THIS (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=50&products_id=565&osCsid=8f8ab5db1c9a635a3bc4535f7fc5ecde)could be a possible the answer to our problem?

Hm... but this scandoubler of Phase 5 does support 24bit for AGA or not? If it's 16bit I think it's better to keep my 1084S monitor.

That seems very expensive for a switch, I'd rather use a second monitor.

I have a Level One KVM Switch, which I used it to switch between my PC (bliah!) and my Pegasos 2 machine. Can I use a similar switch to switch between the GFX card and the scandoubler or I will have problem with that? Because I heard that it's not working with electronical switches, or am I wrong?

I used a cheap $20 eBay switch with my A4000.  It worked great, with only a little signal degradation.  (Voodoo modes looked great, the native modes through a DCE ScanMagic were a little fuzzy.)

Agreed! I was hoping Phantom was loaded and could buy us one each :-D

I'll just put on a second PC monitor on for now :-)

Does anyone remember a switch called something like a BMON or UMON?
