Title: Problem finding Kickstart ROM sockets in A4000
Post by: IslDreamer on February 20, 2008, 08:23:55 PM
Is there a good online source with illustrated tutorials for common Amiga hardware upgrades/issues?

I just bought a pair of 3.1 kickstart ROMs for a recently purchased A4000D, but I can't locate sockets U175/U176.  I assume that they're under the CD-ROM and hard drive, but before I start taking the machine apart, I'd like to find a guide to putting it back together!

And where do I find the revision number for the motherboard?

The ROM sockets are under the CPU card. As is the motherboard info.

thanks, guys.  So is there an illustrated guide to hardware replacements or perhaps a source for PDFs of old manuals?

I haven't seen an illustrated guild but here goes. Not my fault if it breaks.

1.) Remove the case cover.
2.) Remove the front bezel by depressing the plastic snap in locks.
3.) Remove the drive cage by removing the cables from the drives and the screws from the front.

Make sure you are grounded for this part.

4.) Very carefully lift on both the left and the right side of the accelerator card with even pressure on both sides until it comes free from the CPU socket.

(You should now see the ROM sockets U175 and U176 on the motherboard)

5.) Remove the old ROMs. Carefully noting which way the notch or hole faces on the original ROMs. Normally towards the back of the case. Be sure on this though. This is the way you will orient the new ROMs. (Pin 1 is important.)
To remove the roms you can use a special tool to pull them - the safest way or a small screw driver - very carefully inserted between the ROM socket and the rom. Not on the motherboard!!!!! Some people say they can rock them out with there hands, mine have always been so tight that I've been afraid to do that.

6.)The lower number chip typically goes in U175 and the higher in U176. Be sure to align pin one correctly. Be careful not to bend the pins when you insert the new ones.

I don't know how your chips are labeled. Usually a seller will give you instructions on which ROM goes in which socket.

7.) Reassemble enough to test the system, then reassemble the rest.

Oh well...there goes one set of ROMs!

It took about ten tries and one pin finally snapped off. F*ck!

I'd also forgotten about the joys of unkeyed drive cables.  What side does the red go on when looking at the back of the drive: left or right?

EDIT: Nevermind.  The red edge goes closest to the power connector.
