Sorry for the swearing. I just need to rant a little.
There's an office Dell Dimension 4300 with WinME I'm trying to run defrag on and its giving me trouble. Can't even do simple maintenance on these god daym things without it giving you sh*t.
Makes me appreciate Amiga's more.

You have my pity! I gave up tying to run scandisk with Norton Antivirus installed. I found out the best thing to do was to just turn the darn PC off at the mains. When I switch it back on it displays the blue screen "Windoze was not shut down properly blah blah blah blah" and does the scan ok :pint:

@Amiduffer
Sounds like something may actually be trying write something to the disk while the defrag is running, some sort of malware perhaps?
@A4000_Mad
Firstly, don't use anything Symantec/Norton. Besides which, I've done plenty of defrags with Symantec AV running no problems, must be something your doing thats upsetting it. BTW, all journaled file systems require a check of some kind if power is cut suddenly, it's all part of trying to protect your data. Ever shut an Amiga off during a disk write?

AMEN! No, I got rid of Symantec ensuring that it was totally cleaned out of the registry (you gotta do it by hand fer cryin out loud!), and it hasn't been hooked up to the internet in a long time, so I doubt malware is involved. Its giving me trouble even in safe mode! :evil: If I run defrag in SM, it runs out of memory!

Sounds really strange, perhaps you could download a live CD and defrag that way? Or even better, take a look at the 3rd party defrag tools.

That's because defrag doesn't work on windows ME. It's a well known bug, and used t be well documented on the M$ knowledge base. It never got fix as ME was droped like a stone a year after release.
There is a reaseon why ME has such a bad reputation!

i use win98se on a couple of my machines and have found that they run best if you backup regularly and do a fresh install a couple times a year. i usually partition my drives and reinstall the os like that

Thanks adz
I did all I could to run scandisk from inside Windoze. I even asked an expert who guided me through making changes in the registry. With XP you can arrange scandisk to run the next time you start the computer, which is fine. But coudn't do that in Win98 of my little 500Mhz Compaq Deskpro. I didn't switch it off while it was in the middle of a scan. I waited till it said something like "Windoze has made you sit there frustrated while it has fooked about 10 times but another program is writing to the drive. Do you want it continue winding you up some more?". I clicked "No" and waited for all disk activity to stop before switching off at the mains. I would never switch a PC or an Amiga off while there is HDD or floppy drive activity going on :-)
Oh! I coudn't possibly give up using Norton Ghost for copying HDD's and setting up PC's quickly :-D

Journaling file systems... >PUKE<....
Doesn't it just seem like the kind of technology that belongs on an old IBM Winchester drive?
You won't find any such thing on my Amiga.

No kidding, thats the first I heard of it. The words knowledge and Microsoft seem to be mutually exclusive. :evil: Thanks.

Format that thing and get at least Win2k on it.

I found a defrag program called diskkeeper lite, and its defragmenting nicely as I speak.
How much did people have to pay for a Win ME "upgrade" when it first came out?
