"Finally, trolls create a paranoid environment, such that a casual criticism by a new arrival can elicit a ferocious and inappropriate backlash."

Yup, 100% correct.

AFAIK, "Trolling" is originally short for "Trolling for Newbies". That is, when a very experiensed person (with a lot of knowledge) deliberately pretends to be clueless by writing clueless questions, with the only purpose of trying to get even more clueless answeres and explanations from real newbies, just for the laugh of it. You throw a bait, and the poor victim bites just because he doesn't know better, and then it is obvious for everyone that he is a newbie. Trolling is a fishing method, BTW ...

instead of beeing set in a jungle/war theme , its now inside everyone's computers and its main thing is to take over the people using em.

you start as a normal newbie, later stages includes trolls and zealots and alot more..

Trolling is a fishing method, BTW ...

Shouldn't that be "trawling"?

Hmm, I'm no fishing man, but I think that when you Trawl you are using a big fishing boat that pulls a very long net on the ocean. When you troll, you are rowing a small boat (in a lake perhaps) with a special kind of fishing rod ...

One with a great big red shiny blinking button at the end of the reel that says PUSH ME, and makes loud noises like slot machines.

Yes, you are of course correct. I've never heard about trolling as a fishing method before, only trawling, but looking it up on the net I see that trolling is indeed a fishing method.

Well, trawling is old spelling of trolling, as best as I can figure.  I think they're the same thing.  Which is, fishing with a lead-weighted outrigger from a slowly moving boat.  This requires heavy poles and balance systems for the extra weight, in some cases (ocean) or can simply be a lure or small sinker on small lakes.  The idea is that by dragging your fishing rig (weighted, bait and hooks) through the water, it looks more like a real fish, and a larger fish will swim up and snatch it.

Hence, I also believe that "trolling for newbies" is that someone tosses out a "bait" statement, which then others pounce on.

Then again, "trolls" do live under bridges, and so do some of the residents of message boards, I'm sure.  ;-)

@ Takemehomegrandma,

Small fishing boats sometime have a small "trolling motor" engine which refers to them moving slowly and quietly within the lake as they move around looking for a good fishing spot.  This is usually around 10-15hp in size as opposed the the big 250hp monster that they have on the back which scares off everything withing a 5 mile radius.

Hope this helps  :-D

Well it seems to be some fisher-men among us. Nice, seems like I have learned something today too! :-)

BTW, I found this interesting and amusing article (http://www.urban75.com/Mag/troll.html) on the subject "trolling" (not the fisherman activity, the other). Some links there too, for further reading. Brought me some laughs ... :-)

im not suggesting that you have deliberatly given us a faulty website (or one with virii), but it seemed to cause a lot of problems for me, under netscape
does anybody else get problems with this link? or was it just my machine at the time

Man, that's a revalation about FUD!

I thought either it was a polite version of an expletive, or when I heard someone use the term "FUD Spreading" (which brings even more mental images to mind) I decided it meant unwarrented rumour speading or s*** stiring.  :-D

KOOL DICTIONARY! ;-)
