Title: Help With DMS Files
Post by: dannyp1 on February 06, 2008, 12:31:11 AM
I'm having an awful time trying to extract DMS files.  I can't get Unarc from OS3.9 to work and I think it should.  It uses XadMaster and XadMaster lists DMS files among the files it handles.  Could someone give me a hand with this and let me know the proper procedure or a good program to use that will work and where to find it.  Thanks,

Dan :-?

I've never tried unpacking DMS files with UnArc, but I imagine they would need to be standard disk formats to work. That would rule out most games and demos.

Doesn't DMS itself work?

Where do you get "just DMS" from?  I need the working program mostly for more recent online installation disks than I have for some of my hardware.  I don't have any DMS demos or games that I can think of.  As I said, XadMaster is said to handle DMS files but I can't get it to.

I just checked on Aminet and could find no listings under dmsmaster or dms master.

Try DiskWiz (http://members.tripod.com/whdloadrules/utilities.html).  It handles lots of disk formate (DMS included).

There's an older version of DMS on Aminet (http://aminet.net/package/util/arc/dms111), and you can probably find better/newer versions by searching Google.

You also can write DMS images to RAD: or virtual floppy drives (like with FMS). They will work if they contain standard filesystem.

It is a LOT faster install apps that way than writing them to real floppies. Or if you don't happen to have working floppy drive ;)

Example in shell:

mount rad:
dms write diskimage.dms to rad:

Then you can run installer script, for example, and when it asks another disk, just run dms again to write new image to rad. Repeat the task until program is installed :)
