Saw this today. Bloody brilliant. The way it's shot from the perspective of a person holding a camcorder is at times frustrating, when the person holding it is swinging it around in blind panic, but actually that makes it all the more realistic. In that situation you wouldn't be able to take the time to focus on anything, and everything would be a blur. You really feel like you're there, and some parts are really frightening. Great stuff :-D

How annoying... I now have two different comments regarding this film... Yours good... the other bad... :-?

We have a tie-break situation!

Considering the preview, except for the movements of the camera, it looks very traditionally played, animated and 'Hollywood'-colourful.

Likewise.
Just a few hours ago I had one of my mates tell me to give it a wide berth.
Oh, and I'm just in from the Rifles gig - brilliant..... again.

If nothing else, viewers should appreciate the advances in motion tracking and CGI. I was going to go see it, but the Star Trek teaser was posted online the Monday after its release. No reason to see Cloverfield now. ;-)

Then don't watch 'Monster' either. It's the exact same story, based in Tokyo but much lower budget. The hand held cam issues annoy in Cloverfield, but really gripe in this one.

Budgets cannot be low enough, considering these kinds of movies.

I wasn't overly impressed with Cloverfield.
Warning, spoiler and negative opinion follows...
Basically, it's a survivor story. The plot was very thin, and even that had a number of holes which I thought had just been woefully neglected by the makers. I don't want to write too much about the plot issues here, though.
A plotless survivor story must at least have a genuine human interest, which I didn't feel. This may well just be a personal thing, but I didn't feel any sense of intimacy with the characters, and they were not likeable for me.
Hud had a couple of funny comments, but I found him annoying one dimensional, and way too pathetic. I didn't see a genuine level of intimacy between Hud, and his best friend, on a personal level (not counting survivor type actions taken together). Hud seemed closer to his best friend's brother. Having said that, there were one or two touching moments.
Godzilla actually has more plot and substance than Cloverfield, and I don't consider that to be a great endorsement. I'm a sci-fi fan, and I find it disappointing when a movie such as Cloverfield teases my curiosity, but delves no further into the main concept of the movie than a few people running for their lives.
The monster special effects were done well, and I'm quite OK with the monster only being viewed in fleeting glances. I think this usually works well with horror, as it maintains a level of mystery.
Personally, I much preferred 28 Days Later, for a budget survivor movie. I found the action much more gripping, and frantic.
So, want to shoot me down, Moto? ;-)

Heh, no I don't want to shoot you down Oli :-) All of your points are valid, and on the whole I agree with them. But if you take the film at face value and accept it for what it is, it's much more enjoyable. Yes the plot was thin on the ground. Yes the characters were a bit insipid. Yes there were some plot holes. But I just enjoyed it for the frantic scenes from the "first-person" perspective. The scene in the street when the monster first started destroying NY, when Brooklyn Bridge was destroyed, and in the subway tunnel were really heart-pounding moments, and in my opinion the camcorder idea really added to this. I have never seen a film like it, which probably contributed to my enjoyment.
I definitely agree with you on 28 Days Later though. That film remains one of my favourites!

Just finished watching it - actually it's like: the less you know about it before, the better it is. I was expecting some mystery / thriller thing and got pretty much carried away - it just doesn't let you catch breath. That's about the most important point to make it work because thinking about the stuff you see would very much spoil it all.
The plot and the characters are rather thin, but a supposedly authentic video like this would be the same way pretty much, wouldn't it? I didn't really like the end, but there was not much else to expect. I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Damn it, I wanted an argument! This thread has less plot than the movie.

Motorollin is right. A great movie. Saw it at the midnight sneak here in the US and went back to see it again since. Easily in my top 5 for the last twelve months.
