I was copying stackattack2 from it's lha archive using dopus and archdir, when suddenly all the contents of C: went missing!
I'm using an amiga4000 with sfs on a 8gb scsi disk(cybscsi.device). The boot partition is 1gb, it's the first partition on the drive.
I have os3.5 installed, and running opus magellan ii.
Is there any hope, or is it format and reinstall?? :-O

Sorry to hear that this happened to you. I had this happen once when I've tried to move contents from an archive rather than copy them. The contents of the directory I was moving files into got wiped clean. It's caused either by a bad argument passed to the unarchiving command in the ARexx script or a bug in the unarchiving command itself.
As far as recovery goes, I was fortunate enough to have the .deldir option in PFS set up and was able to recover everything. You can probably recover enough of the missing C: files from a 3.1 Workbench disk to get the CD drive mounted. Once you do, you can restore the rest of the C: directory from the 3.5 CD and bring your system back up from there without reformatting.
Hopefully that'll help.

YEs, I used copy as when it happened. I tried it on my other amiga with a less critical folder, and the same happened there.
I'll take your advice, and see what I manage to restore.
I'm tempted to just clean reinstall the whole thing. But I need to backup some SCSI stuff first, so that I can get the CD-ROM online again.
I have a rescue disk with SFSSalv on, but that wasn't much help. It showed a lot of bad dirs. Between one of the bad dirs, and .recycle I can restore 47 of the many many files lost from C:
