Title: Up-Helly-Aa
Post by: blobrana on January 29, 2008, 11:06:57 PM
Shetlander gathered today to celebrate their Viking heritage with a spectacular festival of fire and fancy dress.
During "Up-Helly-Aa", hundreds of residents of the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland  have a  torchlight parade  which ends an elaborately-crafted Viking longship  dragged through the town of Lerwick and  being set on fire.

The wording of that made me laugh - it makes it sound like an obligation:

"No, sorry, it's only 23:30. You can't stop dancing and singing yet."

Wear your Viking helmet, spread mayonnaise on the lawn and celebrate Weasel Stomping Day? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEOAh9RDIfI&feature=related)
