Like the title thread says:What is the number of powerpc boards phase 5 produced and sold in europe?
Does anyone have the answer for this?
I had this question because i want to have an answer for this next question:
"What is the maximum number of amiga users that would be able to run amiga os 4.0 nowdays?"
To me running amiga os 4.0 seems like it has no future.I am a classic amiga 1200 owner and ppc boards are out of my budget and style-(i have money but i am not willing to spend several hundreds of euros for old ppc boards running only on 233 or max 266 mhz).
The number of users that can run amiga os 4.0 classic depends on the amount of ppc units produced so far and sold (and how many of these are still in functional status.)
Who has the patents and rights to produce these ppc boards after phase5 closed?I mean why hasn't someone tried to produce and sell those boards and make new units?
If technology was available in the 90ies to make such boards then why noone makes them now?
I think we should protest and demand cheap new ppc accelerators.Amiga os 4.0 is out but it is like an expensive hobby!Noone can run it but very few people!this is CRAP!!!
I am fed up with the retrostyle status on ebay that goes like "you want powerpc amiga you have to PAY for it dearly and high PRICE for the sin of wanting a fast amiga!"
I dream that someday soon powerpc accelerators will be available for all of us.Is this dream likely to be reality?
Or maybe amiga users have fallen in to a nightmare that we cannot escape?
Has someone felt the way i do?I really want amiga os 4.0...but cant afford to sell one arm and leg for it yet!

I agree, In Australia it's even worst... AU$1000 for an old card that can die at anytime is too much of a waste.
I would consider buying a new card if they were beening made again, if it was a decent price.
But i don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.
So i think my best bet is AROS running on modern PC hardware..... 2GB ram, quad core, 1 TB HDD, Nvidia 8800GTS anyone. :-D

This (http://powerup.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=39) is the best data available right now. I'm sure the number of boards produced is much higher, but this shows a general picture of the number of "active" users. Again, actual numbers are probably higher.

I make mine your concerns, but we need to look into reality:
- You can't do a new batch of those old PPC cards. The costs will surely pass the boards you see in Fleabay.
Think with me: by the actual laws in Europe against lead (ROHs or something), you cannot use an old chip with lead in new boards.
A brand-new, never used MC68060RC50 (needed for the board, lead-free) costs around EU 500! That's what I call a rip-off.
Add to this the "new" PPC 603 or 604 or G3/G4. The board will cost more than 1000 Euros, easily. Even using modern chips and memory slots (DDR x SIMM72).

Even with plentiful PPC supply, OS4 would be limited to active classic Amiga users.
I wonder what the recent OS4 sales figures look like?
My guess is Hyperion are wondering why they bothered.
-
I can recall old Amiga Format articles stating about 10000 ppc boards sold worldwide, but I honestly don't think they were that many actually sold. Maybe half that figure and that's just *maybe*.

@Matt_H
I think that web page won't give accurate results. I have two boards and my friends have 10 unregistered boards. Most of them are active amigans too. And half of them have permedia2

I don't know the sales figures, but I seem to recall recently Hyperion or was it Acube, stating that demand had exceeded their own predictions.

Right, but a lot of us have unopened copies that will never run on anything. The demand for a $115.00 pretty box and coaster will fade VERY quickly. I suspect that by now they have probably sold about as many as copies of OS4 as they are going to sell unless the situation changes.
