Title: Burning CD32 games
Post by: motorollin on January 22, 2008, 10:34:02 PM
I've downloaded Zool 2 from Back2TheRoots, and Worms and Super Stardust from Dream17. When I burn Zool 2 or Worms I get errors that it has run out of data, and the audio tracks won't play. I got the same error in Disposable Hero (from B2R) but that seems to play ok. Also, Super Stardust doesn't seem to have anything to burn - although there is an ISO and MP3 audio tracks, the size of the burn once I load the CUE file is 0 bytes.

This was when burned using an app called "Burn" on my Mac. I tried CDRWin on a PC but for some reason my burner wasn't supported.

Any ideas?

On the pc, mount the cd's with daemon tools and try it with WinUAE?
Also, try to burn it with PowerISO

I don't think CD32 games work in WinUAE. I will try PowerISO, and failing that mounting with Daemon tools is a good idea as I can then use WinImage to rip it back as an ISO, and hopefully burn on my Mac.

Cheers!

Alcohol120% works for me
(using raw dao mode)

I think there's something wrong with the images. When I try to open the .cue files in PowerISO I get the error "File format is invalid or unsupported". Only one of them worked (Zool 2) but it didn't include the audio tracks. I will give Alcohol 120 a try - thanks Speel.

Alcohol 120% gives me a similar error about an unsupported format. I think it might be the MP3 audio tracks it doesn't like. I might try converting them to WAVs and see if that makes a difference.

Have just converted the MP3 tracks to WAVs, manually edited the cue sheet to make it use the WAVs, and Alcohol 120% actually attempted to burn the image. It failed saying "Invalid Field In Parameter List", but I was burning under Parallels on my Mac which might be why (the error came from the drive, not the software). So I'll try installing Alcohol 120% on a real PC and try again.

Same error from Alcohol 120 and Nero on a real PC, though Nero burned Zool 2 fine. Would somebody mind downloading Super Stardust from Dream17 and try burning it? I'm starting to think the image is corrupt.

I was intending to open a thread about this problem. I am trying to do the same but using MakeCD. Most ISOs are burned fine with it, but some fail. I think that the failing ones are ISOs which contains Data along with music tracks, although i am not sure.

 If you mean a buffer underrun, i have the same problem. I tried to set the writing speex to x1 without success.

 Furthermore, the VirtualCD tool (it lets you access an ISO file, like it was a CD-ROM) fails to recognize these particular ISOs.

 I don't mind, but my connection is too slow to download CDs.

 I use Nero here with any .ISO I find.

 Never lost a CD.

 Maybe the program settings are wrong. Remember the Amiga .ISO have different flags (Unix-like) than Mac & winblows.

 So, play the CD-burning options before burn a CD. Specially those who support different file systems.

I can burn the ISO without problems. But I want to burn using the cue sheet so I can include the audio tracks. It's a shame the games weren't dumped as an ISO only with the audio tracks inside it.

I suppose a workaround would be to recreate the original CD. Does anyone know how to create a CD using the contents and boot sector of an ISO as track 1 (data) and MP3s/WAVs as the remaining tracks (audio)?

There's an old but still mostly accurate MakeCD tutorial at http://acdldp.emuunlim.com/bootablecdr.shtml. You'll need a copy of CD32.TM, which you can probably rip from the ISO image. (Hint: It follows the primary volume descriptior, starts with a series of asterisks (0x2a), is 2048 bytes in length, and probably begins at offset 34816.)

If your Windows or Mac software lets you create custom volume descriptors, you can use that, too. It's not the El Torito spec, though, so that won't work.

After burning the first track with MakeCD--presumably using track-at-once--you should be able to burn additional audio tracks, assuming the disc wasn't finalized.

Title: Re: Burning CD32 games

I don't know whether the problem lies in the image, the cuesheet, or the way I'm burning it. I'll try re-creating the whole image using the guide Trev linked to above and see if I can create a working ISO. If so, I'll submit it to BTTR.

@motorollin

Try Fireburner for windows.

http://www.videohelp.com/oldguides/fireburner.htm

Its specifically written for buring .bin and .cue files

It will produce workable CD32 iamges.

To play CD32 games under WinUAE you need images of:-

Rom File - Kickstart 3.1 (CD32) rev 40.60
Extended Rom File - CD32 Extended Rom rev. 40.60

Edit:-

IIRC to burn Super stardust from Dream17 you have to edit the cue file.

Thread on it here:-

Thanks Speel.

I'm about to lose my temper with this. Although Nero will burn the fixed cue sheet to its virtual drive, it won't burn it to a CD (same error as before). I used Nero's virtual drive to convert the cue in to a .nrg. Nero wouldn't burn that to CD either (same error). Tried to burn the .nrg with Alcohol 120% and it burned succesfully, but the game wouldn't boot even though I could see the data on there and also the audio tracks. Tried to burn the fixed cue sheet in Alcohol 120% and got some error. Tried to burn the fixed cue sheet in Fireburner. Appeared to write and complete succesfully but the disc was still blank!

This is ridiculous. Does anyone have a copy of this game?

Try nero burning room. Works fine with most cue/bin files. You do sometimes have to edit the cue file in notepad to set the path to the .bin file, but that takes only 5 seconds.

Edit: nm.. seems like you have already tested it..
But anyways.. there should be more burning programs that supports it. One thing you could also try is to mount the cue/bin image to a virtual disk using daemon tools and then just copy from the virtual drive to the burner in nero.

I tried all sort of things with Super Stardust, but nothing is succesfull sofar. All of the virtual drive software I have give the same error: "This track type is currently not supported" or something similar. The iso itself can be mounted, but when I start WinUAE in cd32 mode, nothing is happening. If I start with a Workbench disk, I can see the game icon, but doubleclicking on it results in no game. I'm suspecting the image is corrupted or something  :-?

@motorollin

So Super Stardust will burn if you do not include the audio files, correct? If so, could it be that the formatting of the audio files is causing the problem? Why not try burning an audio CD to see if your burning program will allow it. Best to eliminate the possibility that the audio files were ripped incorrectly I think.
Title: Re: Burning CD32 games
Post by: Krusher on January 25, 2008, 01:03:42 AM
The mp3's shouldn't be in mp3, but plain pcm wave files like all cdrom/audio combo's

I'm even suprised that no-one comments that mp3's on an unaccelerated Amiga are even possible without hardware support, since mp3 wasn't there when the cd32 was designed.
Title: Re: Burning CD32 games
Post by: HenryCase on January 25, 2008, 02:12:57 AM
@Krusher
MP3s as a format existed at the time the CD32 was released, as  MP3 is really MPEG 1 Layer 3 (i.e. the audio layer).

However, I was also surprised that the audio was stored in this format, wav files do seem like a more natural choice. Perhaps the mp3 formatting was chosen by Dream17 for ease of distribution (smaller file sizes).

I have located a torrent for this game and the info on it says it will burn in DAO/Raw mode. Once it finishes downloading I will test burning it. Regarding the audio tracks causing the problem, I did try converting them to WAV but this made no difference. The copy I am downloading is over 400MB in size compressed, so it looks like the audio is already in WAV format.

Ooooh alternative copy of SSD has finished downloading and is burning as we speak! Similar to the Dream17 version it's an ISO, several audio files and a cue sheet. The audio files are WAVs. Nero started burning the disc immediately with no complaints. Will report back in a few minutes once it has finished and I've tested it.

I think the problem is that cdrw are less reflective and some older cd drives will just not play them.

Also sometimes burning images at too high speed canc ause problems with older systems.  I know it takes longer but when burning images for older systems always try and use good quality CDRs and burn at x2 max

Did you particularly want an ISO image or would an LHA file be ok? The contents of the SuperStardust CD32 disc convert into a 16MB LHA file.

To fully test it I've just unpacked the LHA file to give a drawer called SSD, and then written the contents of the drawer to a CD-R with help from a great little MakeCD tutorial I found here (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33888) :-D :-D :-D

I have changed the audio tracks on the pc from mp3 to wav (using CDex), made myself a cue sheet with sega cue maker, using that cue sheet I burned the cd's. No problem, but it takes a long time to load a game, maybe I should use another type of cdr's. Can't burn the cd lower than 4x speed.
And, the Worms CD32 game demands a copy protection code, which is not delivered with it...

I just found out TDK cd-rs are the disks needed to burn the images on. Works like a treat now  8-)

@zyphoid
Sorry I didn't see your reply to this thread. I can't provide a link to the ISO which worked but PM me your email address if you want to know how to find it.

LHA archiving the contents of the CD and then burning it to a CD won't boot on a CD32. You would have to have the CDTV boot sector file thing (whatever it actually is). The best way is to burn a known working ISO which already contains a working CD32 boot sector.

In the case of SSD, I think there were two problems. First of all the cue sheet was dodgy, which stopped it working. Then I tried a different cue sheet, but I switched to a CDRW, which didn't work. The fixed cue sheet with the original ISO from Dream17 might actually work, but I haven't tested it.
