Title: Any old, old skoolers? I just picked up a C128.
Post by: IndyJones on January 22, 2008, 02:47:02 PM
Although I used an Amiga 4000 with a Toaster for video production, I was never a Commodore man. Wanting to round out my collection, though, I just picked up a C128 on eBay. With no knowledge of it, I don't know what to do with it, though.

Are there any preservation sites where I can download some games? Or, is there a way to "network" the C128 to a PC? What can I be doing with my new baby?

Have fun with the c128.

I still use my C128 to this day, it has more uses than you may think.
I have it hooked to my Commodore 1084S monitor, it is good for 80 column mode on that.
It can use CPM as it has a Z80 CPU on board.

Get to know it, you will enjoy that machine.
There are tons of software out there.

I just grabbed one of eBay too.  I used to have one back when they first came out (and a Vic20 & C64) and fancied getting back into the 8 bit thing.

I'm waiting for a cable to turn up which will allow me to connect my 1571 floppy drive to one of my PCs and then write C64 disk imaged back to real floppy disks to use on the C128.

Interesting to read above that the Amiga 1084S monitor allows 80 column mode on the 128, I have my orginal Amiga 1081 monitor so I wonder if that would work with the correct cable.  Mind you, my 1081 is from the UK and my C128 is a USA NTSC model...

I'm mainly using my C128 in C64 mode, but if you want to transfer files from/to PC/Mac, I recommend getting the MMC64 SD adapter.  I've also heard lots of good stuff about the Retro Replay/RRNet combo.

I've already preordered a Retro Replay MMC catridge.  It certainly looks like the best solution even if it's a more expensive option.

Hi,

I haven't used a C=128, but here are some things you could use with the 128 in C=64 mode (maybe 128 mode as well, not sure).

If you're into electronic music, you could have a look at the Prophet64 and its related projects:

Prophet64.com (http://www.prophet64.com/)

mssiah.com (http://www.mssiah.com/) (I'm definitely getting one of these babies when released)

bigmech.com Prophet64 mods (http://bigmech.com/misc/c64mods/index.html) (this stuff is pretty cool to me)

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it here, but there are some C=64 drive emulators for a PC, which can allow a C=64 to use files on a hard drive (with some limitations).

Have fun,

Oli

I use 64HDD to connect my C128 or C64 to my PC, the machines are connected via XE1541 and the PC acts as a 1541 drive emulator. I can download all my games and applications to my PC and run them on my 128 very easily.
