Hi, I'm reading the 'rise and fall of commodore' book and was inspired to get a C64 from ebay, but they look quite rare/expensive.
Whats the best full version c64 emulator for my A1200?
Is there a better software version of BASIC for the C64, anything like AMOS?

The Commodore 64 rare and expensive? Those things grow on trees over here.
I've paid an average of 15-20 Euros for each of my C64s, and most came with a monitor, diskdrive or datassette player, lots of games etc.
I'm pretty sure if you check your local thriftstore, craigslist or ads paper that you'll be able to find a cheap one...

The c64 is not that rare. many thinks it is and wants dracula prices for them.
The C64 topped its sales somewhere around 30 million sold units, making it the best selling personal computer of all time. (from wikipedia)
however, diskdrives and other peripherals for the C64 is becomming rare as He||...
As for the emulator. I hade one that worked very good. but i lost the disk and cannot find it back. Nor do i remember its name...

No, the C64 isn't rare - it's in the Gunniess book of world record for a reason. They are fairly reasonable priced over here (Norway), ranging from £20 and up, depending on condition/extras.
As for emulators, I recall finding the A64 emulator pretty good. If you have a PC/Mac, try VICE (http://www.viceteam.org/).
And as for BASIC, well, you can give Simons' Basic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simons'_BASIC) a go.

Just wanted to point out that VICE can also be run on an Amiga.

Apart from the fact that a pc has never been sold as a completely assembled compyter with case, audio, gfx++ in one case. like the C64 was. However, if you count pcs by the number of sold MB.... :-)

Yes but how fast can A64 be as it was launched around the time of the Amiga 500/2000 if not before? Anyone want to comment on the speed?
Or is it not a proper C64 emulator ie can't play games and such?

Magic 64 is one of the best for an A1200 if you can get a key.
Frodo is also good. More compatible but slower than magic
Vice I havent got working at all
A64 and others are pointless.
You do need a decent accelerator and extra memory to get any use out of them all and a graphics card for perfect performance.

About the emulator:
Magic64 if you're on 68k. It has some icompatibilities, but it plays fine most of the stuff. Good luck finding a way to register though :/
Frodo and Vice are more compatible and feature-rich (especially Vice) , but really you need a PPC to enjoy them. They're not bad on my oc'ed 060@80 + gfx card though.

I used Simons BASIC back in the 80s on the C64 and thought it was great. I actually picked up a cartridge and manual off eBay several months ago just to play with it again on the C128.
Cartridges (or even the floppy disk version) seem to be common, but it is hell to get hold of a manual.

There's a few options, but what is best for you depends on what spec machine you have. For a lower spec machine (040+aga or lower) MagiC64 is probably your best option. It's not as compatible as some of the other emulators, but it is fairly fast compared to the others. For a higher spec machine (ppc/060(maybe, not sure how fast it is on 68k)Vice is up to date on amiga os/clones, and in my opinon is porbably the best c64 emulator around, so you cant go far from there. Frodo also has an amiga port for both 68k and ppc.
As for c64 BASICs I played around with Simons basic a bunch of years ago. I was similar to the default c64 BASIC, but faster and had more graphics and sound commands if I recall, plus I think came with a compiler (either came with, or one was available).
