Title: Hello...
Post by: JonGKay026 on January 16, 2008, 07:34:45 PM
Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd introduce myself.  My name's Jonathan & I'm from Scotland.

I've currently got an A1200 which I've been upgrading when I can.  I've put a 4Gb hard disk into it & I've just installed Kickstart 3.1 & put WB3.1 onto the hard disk.  I don't have CD drive & I'm not sure if I can fit one along side the 2.5 inch HD (I have a spare PC internal CD burner).

I'm not really intending to do anything serious with it, but I would like to upgrade the memory.  I'd fit an accelerator if I could find one & it's not particularly expensive.

Welcome from Texas.
I have seen a mod where someone put a laptop cd in an A1200.
It is slimmer than a desktop cdRom.

Dear Friend:

Didn't you know the a1200 allows you to install an 'external' cd drive to it?

my first amiga 1200 cd just consisted of an ide cable hanging out the back of the case plugged into a cdrom....worked a treat!

If you're not really going to do anything serious with it, get a 68030-based accelerator with 32+ megs of RAM.  That is the minimum requirement to play Total Chaos AGA (http://aminet.net/game/strat/TotalChaosAGAr6.lha) with but still fairly compatible with everything else.

One other thing you might want is to get a 1084S or equivalent monitor so you can display the European PAL scan rates since that's where most Amiga software originates from.

-edit-
Since you said you are from Scotland, a SCART connection to a PAL TV set should do just as nicely as a 1084S monitor.  (I missed the part saying you were from Scotland.)

Welcome to Amiga.org from Milwaukee!

It's a shame Amiga accelerators are so hard to come by/expensive, it really does make using Amiga's much more fun.

68030's are best for game compatibility out of the box, but I wouldn't trade my 1260 in for ANYthing. And besides, WHDLoad takes care of gaming :)
