Title: Installing OS4 (any chance?)
Post by: Bamiga2002 on January 10, 2008, 09:52:09 AM
Is there any way of installing OS4 from a CF-card (I have a CF-card adapter in the internal IDE-port of A1200 and a 1gb CF-card fitted in) by copying the OS4 install-CD files there and booting from the floppy?

Haven't got PowerFlyer or IdeFix now and the BPPC SCSI is not supported...

I would think a 2.5 to 3.5" IDE adaptor lead would be a better route, letting you attach a normal CD-Rom to the motherboard IDE port but...

Well the boot floppy aint going to work as it tries to mount a CD-Rom and if it fails it gives up but you can install OS4 without the boot disk from a current 3.x boot drive just by clicking on install so yeah you should be fine at installing os4 by using the CF disk.

If you really wanted a fresh install make a copy of the 4.0 boot floppy and then edit its startup-sequence, removing the CDrom drive scann bit and check all the command names look for the CD's boot title, not just CD0:.

it should be possible.
there is software on aminet - virtualCD (http://aminet.net/disk/cdrom/virtualcd.lha), that can mount *.iso
I installed OS3.9 that way

Thanks, i'll try the VirtualCD-way too. Don't have an IDE cd-rom drive at hand so that's out of question atm.

But will the IDE-cf be recognised by the floppy disk boot?
Gonna try it today anyway...

IDE-CF adapter definitely work as an install destination as I have one connected on the primary channel of my Fast-ATA controller and the OS4 installer can see it fine but I have not yet tried actually installing to it as want to check the the cooling on my BlizzardPPC before running OS4.  As I have heard a number of people reporting heat issues when running OS4 and I don't want to take any chances with such an expensive and hard to replace bit of equipment.

@Oli_hd:
The thing is that i ONLY have the internal IDE-port in use with a CF-card, nothing else. I DON'T have FastATA or any other controller that is OS4-compatible. Tried to boot from the CF-card but it said "not a dos disk" or smthng...--> *EDIT* Tried to boot with OS4 kickstart resident.

Now, i have 2 partitions on the CF-card (498MB both in size):
1st: BLANK PARTITION (to install OS4 to)
2nd: PARTITION (named "AmigaOS 4.0 Install CD") where i want to copy OS4 install-cd contents and to boot & start the installation from.

Is it possible to use this 2nd partition to act and boot as the real OS4 install-cd? What filesystem does OS4 recognise to be able to do this?

@Orange:
How do you mount the OS4-iso under OS4-kickstart loaded resident?

This brings up the filesystem problem.

Thats a common problem with OS4 installs on the classic, it means you didnt set the filesystem to use long file names (07), go to the media toolbox, select the drive, go to the add/remove filesystems, remove the one thats there and then add it back in (from the OS4 CD) and alter the 04 to 07 (as it says in the OS4 manual), Once thats added go to the partitions (you may want to delete them and add them back just to make sure) and make sure the ffs is selected.

When I first installed OS4 it would work fine if I booted from the boot floppy and then reset but wouldnt boot from cold, just saying it wasnt a dos disk and I fixed it by doing the above. :)

The startup-sequence looks for the cd title, not CD0:.

Then thats easy, just name the drive the same as the install CD and you are away. :) (or just do an assign)

Thanks for trying to help, but how do i go to Media Toolbox when the CF card isn't recognised and the OS4 install files are in there? It can read the kickstart resident from the CF card (booting with floppy), so is it possible to run Media Toolbox after i eg. boot without startup-sequence?

EDIT: then another problem rises: i have the OS4 install files on the 2nd partition on CF card, but if i partition the drive with Media Toolbox in order to install OS4 in the 1st partition, will the new filesystem installed wipe out the OS4 install files from my 2nd partition? If like this, then i should have access to the newly created partition (with Media Toolbox) under OS 3.9 in order to copy them install files off the OS4 cd to the CF card's 2nd partition. Then i'd be ready to install the OS on the 1st partition.

Uh oh, is this too much explanation here?  :-o

or prepare/format the CF card from AOS3.9 with SmartFileSystem.

And alter the identifier from 04 to 07? Latest SFS 1.279 or one of the two from OS4 cd?

EDIT: stupid me, SFS supports long filenames by default.

Thanks to all for advice :).

...and i've gotten nowhere. Can't have OS4 installed any way i try :(.

I tried to prepare a *bootable* partition for OS4-kickstart under OS3.9 HDToolBox on my cf-disk (holding OS4 install-cd files), but whether i try FFS or SFS there's no difference. The partition reports a valid DOS-disk under OS3.9 but i *can't* get the cf-card to boot under OS4-kickstart. Once booted from the floppy i can get to OS4-BootMenu and it shows my drive there (DHD1:) but trying to boot from it to install OS4, it says *NOT A DOS DISK* !!

Can someone please guide me to prep the partition under 3.9 for it to boot under OS4? I'm starting to get really frustrated  :ranting: :boohoo:

*EDIT*
I think i've found some help here (http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=24894&forum=14&start=220&viewmode=flat&order=0#420774) :-).

Hiya! Installed Elbox ethernet driver and got into internet :-D. This is great!

I'm typing this with IBrowse on OS4. Cheers! :-)
