Title: OS4 on 1200 partition problems
Post by: StormLord on January 07, 2008, 01:27:11 PM
I have builted an A1200 in original case with ppc/bvision and slot-load combo optical drive matched with an 30GB 2.5 HD. after I had solved all power and arrangement problems I run into one more that I can't think of a solution:

I start instalation of OS4 from floppy and CD and all goes well ... I created 5 partitions,
DH0 1,7GB
DH1 1,7GB
DH2 500MB
DH3 23GB
SWAP 750MB

and I formated all from within instalation setup.

when the install is over succesfuly it requires a cold reboot, but after turning off and back on the amiga (that is running at that moment with 68K kickstart) can't find the partitions except floppy and pcmcia..
I tried to get the disk out and partition it in another machine with 3.9 and powerflyer and then back to the target machine and install-format the partitions.. in that case after cold reboot the amiga can see the partitions but it cant' boot because of a message that DH0 is not a dos disk...
I format the partitions with FFS longfile name...
also I must mention that hard disk is unit 1 (slave) because the optical drive is hardwired as unit 0 (master) but as I know that must not be a problem..
Also DH0, DH1, DH2 that are all bootable checked partitions is in the first 4GB space...
maybe I have to prepare the disk in 3.9 with some kind of TD64 patch so the amiga can "see" the whole disk from the beggining? or to try not to partition and not to format within installation or setup proccess...

any thoughts or known solutions?

Have you changed the DosType of the new filesystem on RDB to DOS\07 (444f5307)? If not, remove the fs and load again (the only way to get the number changed is when loading a new filesystem).

Yes I have changed the number tho ...7 when I was partitioning..
I have built this cute little baby and I can't enjoy it....
:-(

EDIT:
bytheway if I start from OS4 instalation floppy and then warm-reboot then the partitions are correctly shown up on the OS4 kickstart early menu and it boots..

DH0 is not a dos disk...

I experienced a similar problem after setting up a hard drive recently. It turned out that the partition information had not been written to the RBD properly.

My initial suggestion is to do a little test......

Boot into the OS4 BootFloppy disk and OS4 CDrom as if you were going to do an installation (you'll just need to choose your Language, Country, Time zone and keyboard type as usual)

You should then come to the screen where you would normally double click on the 'AmigaOS4-Installation' icon. But instead of double clicking on that, just see if all your partitions are present and can be opened up.

And check what zipper said :-)

yes the partitions are shown up correctly and i can read-write on them..
and ,if my memory don't play games with me, if I warmboot I can select DH0 from early startup menu and boot OS4...

I didn't got it about piru...

Hmmm.... After booting into the BootFloppy & OS4 CDrom as described above, can you then *remove* them both and do a warm reset to boot into the OS4 partition of your hard drive?

(I mean to do this warm reset with OS4 partition set as highest boot priority by 'Media Toolbox' and *without* trying to go into the 'Amiga Early Startup Control')

If I remember correctly (because I have done a lot of experiments) yes.
but for sure I can try it in about an hour an report (I am at work right now)
If thats the case, any suggestions to try?

I had that trouble first.
in mediatoolbox delete the fastfilesystem and then add a new one (yeah you could probably just alter the one there but mehh) and alter the code to 444f5307 (as mentioned) and then go to the partitions and make sure the ffs is selected.

I had done it also but when tinkering I somehow lost that number seven and got that not a dos disk error which caused some hair scratching until I found my mistake and fixed that dostype. No boot problems anymore.

Device and volume names are different, right? (Same names for both can cause problems, at least in older versions of the OS.)

Yes.. device name is DH(x) and volume name is AmigaOS4

actualy I found another slot load optical drive that its hardwired to slave so I'm making my HD master and I will try now to see what happens...

Problem SOLVED!!!!! :-)

I'm writing this post from this amiga with OS4!
actually I don't know what was exactly the problem because I did 2 things together..
I changed the optical drive so it will be slave and HD will be master, and I repartitioned the HD after it has booted from CD and before starting the instalation using the default path for FFS (other times I just used as the manual says the filesystem from the already installed OS4).

Next project: MorphOS on the same machine and finaly OS3.9
but 3.9 will not be used, just for testing because 040 are 5V and gets very hot, so using 2 proccessors at the same time in this original (but modified case) will make things like an oven and dangerous for that precious hardware.

Well, in my case I was able to just reload the OS4 template I had originally used and click on 'Save to disk'. Had I changed any of the partition sizes the data on them would have been lost as you will know. I guess it is possible that your partition information was simply saved properly this time round.

Anyway, congratulations whatever fixed it for you :pint:
